From the perspective of a son of a Father who would do odd jobs and maintenance for local Farmers on the weekends in trade for Eggs, Milk and whatever vegetable was in season, I had then and now, nothing but respect for that man. Knowing that we had little money that his normal week job paid barely anything helped me grow up knowing some important life lessons.

My Father and I had a very rough relationship growing up, but in this area I never found fault with him. His example of work ethic, the whole, "While I'm able to do more, I'll do it!" that made sure his wife and kids survived became the example for me. He was an asshole and was the scariest thing in this world that I ever knew until joining the service, but his work ethic and straight-forwardness of the money situation taught me how to improve my life through hard work and appreciate the things we had.

He's retired now and He's tried apologizing over the years for us having to do without, and I always tell him to stop being ridiculous. He and my Mother did excellent by their children and proof is in our success. The other thing to note; Because of his hard work he pulled us all up and things are quite different for all of us now than they were 40+ years ago.

You keep your chin up and keep leading your child. Show him an example of what a good man is. Take care Brother!

When I graduated from law school in 2010 the legal recession was at its height. There was no legal position at all. I had to go on food stamps temporarily for about two months until I found a position. I had three daughters and a law license and I felt incredibly low. It was what I had to do.

We need to see more social supermarkets. Food at a severely discounted price (not free) but it includes food past the 'best before' date but not the 'use by' date so it's all safe to eat, but quality might be slightly lower.

Reduces food waste, and because you have to pay, it reduces the number of people looking to abuse the system while maintaining one's pride as you still have to pay (i.e. not a handout)

I hit the food bank and the end of Sept and I'll be going back this month. I had to go a couple times a couple years ago too. I know that when I first went I was feeling vulnerable and didn't like feeling like 'a bum' no matter how irrational that thought was.

I must admit though, even though my back was up and I felt vulnerable and certain kind of shame, I have had nothing but good experience. So I'm sorry you're going through that.

An interesting note: there are 2 food banks in my town. One is more like a government run one and the other is a church. There are NO men at the government one. ANd you might wonder "well maybe men don't want to ...." but at the church there's pretty much a 50/50 split of men and women and I'm sure none of them have a diploma in anything related to food banks, administration, social work etc. At the Hope Centre it's a bunch of young women that I"m sure have diplomas in those areas.

My point? The church always has more food, is better run with way less red tape and questions that make people feel even smaller. The people are way nicer and feel like they really care.

The girls at the Hope Centre get to sit in their air conditioned office getting paid a decent living feeling like heros punching names into computers. MEANWHILE the church does it bigger and better and it's run by volunteers that hand food out of a basement window in a tiny small old church. Although I've never seen anyone take a selfie, if it were going to happen it would be at the Hope Centre.

I don't want to detract whatever you saw or felt but I've been to the foodbanks and I've never once thought to consider what other people thought as I was too glad foodbanks even exist.

I've seen people get out of a newer mercedes, go in and grab a ton of food. There is no way to know what others are going through and I also never thought this or that person should or shouldn't be here... maybe it's just me.

One of the few places I've ever donated to was the YMCA, Big Brothers (^{which is disproportionately supportive of girls and boys far outweigh the need} ) and food banks when I could.

Try to not look down at needing or getting help, we're all in the same boat. Rather, show your kids help is there for those who seek it.

I've lost friends due to them not seeing any help or refusing to seek it when they've needed it. Be glad it's there and if the looks of spiteful wahmyn bother you, ignore them and purposely never look or pay attention to them.

It's like driving; Sometimes you're in the lead at the intersection. Sometimes when it turns green, you can't even make it through before it turns red. It might be a tough lesson yet I think it's important to be completely truthful with kids and let them see the world for what it is.

I actually ran a fundraiser for our local food bank and leaned a lot about how they serve. Never feel bad, that’s what it is there for. There is no shame in using every tool available as your scratch and claw your way out of a bad situation. My parents brought me and my siblings to free lunch programs at local schools when I was a kid - I never connected the dots that it was bc we were poor, I just thought it was a free cafeteria lunch.

Don’t be ashamed, just do what you have to do to provide for your kids.
