A lot of expensive things are status symbols that signify "I'm wealthy, look at me". That pisses off a lot of people, so they come up with something slanderous about the person: "Why is he being so flashy? Is he lacking in OTHER AREAS?" And then of course, they imply he has a small penis. I don't think it really has much to do with ridiculing men as it does trying to bring the haves down to the level of the have-nots. I understand the mentality.

Edit: Although, I should note, making fun of someone for having a small penis, or implying that it's a bad thing, is cruel in and of itself. Men can't help the size of the penis they're born with, obviously, and they shouldn't be judged on a physical feature in that way. But nevertheless in our society, "having a small penis" is considered a negative, unmanly, and I guess that's where the real sexism lies.

I own an older Porsche. The fact I have a microscopic dingus doesn't mean I don't genuinely love driving this car. To me it is beautiful and a joy to simply look at. Driving it brings a smile to my face every time and it has done so for almost 10 years now. It's been dead on reliable too.

I also hate when an older fellow is derided when he is in a dead sexy car. He's not necessarily in a mid life crisis or trying to regain youth. When I was 8, I wanted a Porsche. I couldn't afford it then. When I was 18, I wanted a Porsche. I couldn't afford it then. When I was 28, I wanted a Porsche, and sweet merciful God, I could afford it. Most men have to wait until they are older and/or the kids are gone to be able to purchase their dream car. I wanted a lower priced car and was able to get it sooner, but had my dream car been $100k....yeah, youngsters can't get that. Older guys can. It's not trying to get something you lost, it's about finally being able to get the thing you never had but always wanted.

along the same lines, being a middle aged man I constantly hear suggestions of "mid life crisis", and frankly it's beyond getting old, it's moving well into the punch in the neck category.

Yes, I'm 45 years old. Yes I have a nice car (a couple actually), a flashy motorcycle, a young girlfriend, and all the other warning signs of a mid-life crisis.

However, this mid life crisis thing just doesn't exist. It's not real. It's an artifact of living in the real world.

Who is it that's SUPPOSED to be able to afford nice stuff? Teenagers? How the fuck are they going to pay for it? It took until I was 45 years old to AFFORD all this stuff, it's not like suddenly one day I realized motorcycles were fun...I ALWAYS wanted this stuff, but couldn't afford it until now. And liking young attractive women? Seriously, are we really going to pretend that's something other than "aggressively ordinary"?

It's funny how you see a young guy driving a nice car and you say "Parents bought it for him", see an older guy driving a nice car and you say "mid life crisis"...apparently there's never an age when it's ok for a man to drive a nice car without some jealous douchebag trying to tear him down for it.

I dunno. Maybe I have had the fortune to hang out with people who don't make that kind of talk, but it seems like it just comes down to basic human jealousy and a failure to understand that another person's priorities may differ from yours.

My attitude is, and always has been, this: You like spending your money on x? Sweet, glad you have something you like. I happen to like spending my money on y, and I think that's okay too.

I wonder why more people can't see it that way... maybe they're the ones that are insecure enough to need the pseudo-validation afforded by putting others down for superficial reasons.

I think when someone says: "he's compensating" they do literally mean that he's compensating for a small penis. Although what they really mean is that he's compensating for an insecurity he has, whatever it is.

Humans, generally speaking, are deeply uncomfortable with people who have something they don't, or with people who could be considered to have "more" than they do.

This is the cause of my least favorite bullshit dichotomy that frequently pops up: Anyone who is worse than me at [x] is a noob, a loser, someone to be derided and insulted, and anyone who is better than me at [x] obviously has too much time on their hands, and should just get a life.

The "overcompensating for something" tripe is pretty much the same thing, I think. Person A has something or has accomplished something that Person B has not, so Person B invents a way to render it insignificant.

Quite frankly I have an enormous penis (it's worse than average sized in many ways). I like nice cars and cool guns just as much as any other guy. The idea of associating wanting a nice car with penis size makes no sense. Seriously, if my dick is small, I feel sorry for guys whose dicks aren't small.

Just going to throw my experience out there. In grade school, children occasionally joked about small penes, though none of us knew why. In middle school, we joked about small penes, because a bigger penis made you more of a guy. [Bigger is better right.] In high school, we joked about small penes, because large ones proved you were manlier, as you were able to better satisfy a woman.

I can't for the life of me remember that there was any actual legitimate reason to worry about penis sizes, other than by deriding someone about it, they understandibly get offended, which circles back to reinforce the baseless concept that it is important to have a large penis.

That in highschool it was partially about your use to the sexual needs of females was interesting too, but I to go any further along this trail of thought, at least for me, would be to do logical rigour a disservice.

I believe this is used primarily in jest, referring to overcompensation by owning something somewhat outrageous. You are taking it too literally. No one actually attributes penis size to the amount or significance of your possessions.

The opposite would be seeing a woman in a Mercedes and immediately assuming that her wealthy spouse or boyfriend purchased it for her. I think that specific type of teasing goes both ways, but digs on what is socially significant (small dick or slut).

Well, let me play devil's advocate a bit here. Some people misuse the term for anyone who has wealth or power, but that's not how I undersand its intended use. How I understand it is that someone who goes far out of their way to show off their supposed wealth and power is judged negatively (and the penis part comes in a bit later). People who feel the need to make very sure others know about their status are usually not very secure or confident individuals. School bullies being a perfect example. They try to make others feel insecure to make themselves feel more secure. My experience tells me that the guy in the lifted truck with a middle-finger sticker on the back probably isn't a very innerly confident person.

Here's where it gets interesting. People say that penis size is roughly equivalent to confidence. Big penis = confident person. This is where the problem with the expression stems from, in my opinion. It's equating that the person who needs to make perfectly certain that everyone else knows what a powerful kind of guy he is isn't confident, and therefore (problem) he has a small penis.
