When I met my wife she was working retail. I've given her a lot of suggestions as far as asking for promotions, negotiating pay, and how to cultivate a relationship with her superiors that promotes a career path. These were all things she literally didn't think to do. Previously she waited until someone offered her a promotion instead of seeking it out, and she took whatever dollar amount they gave her instead of negotiating. For some reason though, men seem to do this automatically but women don't.

In just a few years she has had several promotions all the way into corporate, a huge pay increase, salary and benefits, and a solid career path going forward. I think she's now realizes that her gender had nothing to do with why she was 'on the bottom' but instead it was her choices and outlook.

Here's my two cents, from a woman who actually experiences this "wage gap". Mine is of course only one example of how people ignore certain things, but I think it's fairly valid.

I work in lower management, in hospitality. I transferred (same company) from a minimum wage job with lots of female staff into where I am now, where I am the only female on the management team. I make a bit less than my male equals. I have no idea what exact percentage, and don't care to find out, because I know it's no where near the percentages stated in the media. It's small.

I have friends who try to tell me that it's a travesty and how dare they pay me less! That this happens everywhere and that the damn patriarchy is at it again. It makes me feel awkward, because I don't feel that way at all.

So, here's my case of debunking this myth (or let's say, fixable problem) pertaining to my own situation.

Examples:

They aren't used to having a woman on their team. There have been genuine cases of them treating me in a mildly sexist way, And also of them taking it REALLY easy on me without me even expecting them to (i.e. not making me do as much manual labour, letting my appearance slide significantly more). This right here is huge. They cut me slack, I cut them slack. It works for us. If I demanded a raise, I would very likely get it. But I'd also be expected to do things that I would physically struggle with. So I don't bother with it. I've chosen to stay in a job that requires some brawn and sweat, when I'm 5'2" and can't lift 50 pounds to save my life.
As stated above, I've never asked for a raise. I get the same tiny little raise as everyone else each year-end, but I've never asked for a wage change point blank. No, a woman shouldn't be expected to beg for equality, and if a company is doing that intentionally then they are personally corrupt. But how many times do people just not speak up? I certainly haven't.
I'm the newest staff member. I honestly believe it is a coincidence that I am making less than the others and I am also female. Most of them have been at the company longer than I have, and my country's economy has changed drastically in the past five years. Even if they were paying me less just for being a woman, I would still have to be the lowest earner just based on my experience level pertaining to this specifically male-dominated field. Maybe I'm just really down to earth, but I wouldn't even expect to be given the same wage as the next guy in line without putting the same amount of years in.

I might be a rare(ish) case of a woman going into a manual labour field without having gone to school for it, but my data counts towards this. I officially make less than the men doing the same exact job as me. I skew the data, even though I am currently content and would do something about it if I was not.

I know this was a long wall of text, but I feel strongly about this topic. I know it's true that blatant discrimination exists out there and that there are women (and other groups of people) truly battling this right now in their places of work. But when the numbers are so inflated and it has become such a hostile topic to even approach if you're a male, it gets under my skin. The same with any other issues that have been adopted by the weird form of "feminism" that's taken society by storm as of late.

Not really, the point of the wage gap being wrong is that women just generally have jobs that pay less. This was not accounted for in the document that said that there is a wage gap. Women are not paid less they just have lower paying jobs

This was recently posted here and one of the top comments broke through the circlejerk that goes along this this image. Audi is simply advertising that they pay women equally as though they are the exception, this is not an argument for the rest of the corporate world. We have much better examples than this.
