As a child, I never understood why dad rarely made it to my hockey or baseball games, or why he would just collapse on the couch after work and want to just relax and watch some TV before going to bed. Sometimes he would come out and have a catch, or show me some hockey tricks to practice, but it was pretty rare when he was working. I was a bit bitter about it, didn't understand it at all.

Then when I was all growed up, I went into business with him, suddenly I understood. Out the door by 6AM, not home before 5PM, 7 days a week when there was work. It's hard manual labor, all day, taking a 30min midmorning break for a bagel, and another 30 minute break for lunch around 1PM. This was his life since I was born. He single-handedly pulled us out of the poorhouse, and got us to lower middle class by the time I graduated high school. I suddenly looked at my childhood in a much different light once I experienced his adulthood firsthand.

I lived this kind of life, as a father. My ex wife worked hard to poison the well against me all 16 years we were divorced. I paid over 160K in child support, never falling behind. And what I'm most proud of, never missed a weekend for any reason although pick up/drop offs were 75 miles from home.

After my daughter graduated high school she came around less & less. Now at 20, I never see her or talk. I gave my life for 16 years as a single parent & now my relationship with my only daughter barely even exists. Thanks........

I have cousins who had a Dad (My uncle) who wasn't there for a lot of their "big" moments. What they failed and still do fail to realize is that my uncle had to pay their child support (Which was almost a 1000 between them) and still support his lifestyle. My Uncle worked a physically demanding job and would take extra shifts to make sure he had enough money to support them but he also had to support himself.

As a kid I hated my Dad for not being with me . Today after I am a Dad I value him so much more . There was a you tube video about a woman saying that being a mother is hardest job in the world , I can only imagine her driving a truck through the ice or being under a coal mine that is pitch dark .

Being in your pajamas and at home with the cushion of taking 50% of what you have can never be the hardest job in the world. No one talks about the father how difficult it is to provide in today's world.

It’s my dads funeral today. More and more am I realising how much he did for us. I wanted to be his friend and in the last 8 years of his life during his retirement we actually got to be. We bonded over work. He was a hard working man who supported me and my family. I wouldn’t be standing without him. My brother and sisters know him in their own way too, but I feel I have recognised how good he was for us even if our relationship growing up left much to be desired. I’m glad we can all say goodbye to him today. His name was Doug and he was 73 and I will miss him.

Although this is a good post, the title does not say enough about its subject. This forces people to click and read before they can decide whether they are interested. It also makes searching impossible.

If everyone did this, the subreddit would become unusable.

My dad took a hard pass on all of it. No child support, complete non-involvement. He's better with my younger half brother which makes me happy.

On the other hand, I care for my son 4 nights a week and still pay almost 1000 in child support. But I've come into a very fortunate career path that I'm very thankful for, while mom still earns approximately what we did when we were teenagers. Do I wish it was different? Oh yeah. Could she earn more? Most likely. But we're doing okay.

It kills me to think of the "non custodial parents" who make less than me. I could barely figure out my finances before having a kid.

I guess, it's just a big whole lot of different situations. I hope the best for all.

In the Netherlands we had a commercial on tv when I was younger, I still quote it at times. "Wie is toch die man die elke zondag het vlees komt snijden?" Said by a young boy.

Meaning "who is that man who comes to cut the meat every Sunday?"

It was to show that the boy never spent time with his father, as he did not realize/see him as such. The dad was never home, always at work.

On a general talk forum I use on mother's Day I always post "Happy Mother's Day everyone" and write a small piece and how wonderful she was and how I miss her. One after another people post happy Mothers Day and then nice little things about that they are doing with their mother that day. Not one person eve posts anything nasty.

On father's Day I do the same thing. I tell the story of how my father worked himself into an early grave doing three shitty jobs so my mum could do what she wanted, and be a stay at home mum raising us three boys. I had a loving and wonderful childhood. He's been gone over 30 years now and I still miss him every day.

I kid you not, it is rare to get three or four posts in before women (and it's always women) come along and start shitting all over dad's. We can't even have one day a year. The bitter vitriol that some ex wives spew is awful to read.

Yup.... This about sums it up. We all hear constantly of the sacrifices women make for their children. Careers, beauty, time etc etc. Yet never of the sacrifices men are expected to make, pretty much to be on the outside of their own family, looking in. It's only really mens lack of choice that facilitates women having the choices that they do.

The strong, independent mother soothing and affirming the little one.

But look at your house! Look at your lifestyle! Who the hell do you think pays for it all!?

Of course he's busy! He's paying for you so you have a good life!

I know this feel, my father was for most of my life a. Long distance over the road truck driver, he would be gone all week then on the weekend he usally spent it maintaining his truck, he had very very little time for me.

It also didnt help that he was raised very strict Jehovah witness so hes a very emotinally withdrawn, like Hank Hill levels so even though I know he loved me he didnt know how to express it.

Now I have grown to an adult, and enlisted into the u.s army (somthing he and his family were very against at the time) and just yesterday I was on the phone with him and out of tbe blue he said he was proud of me for the first time with out me or my mother asking.

I fucking love you dad, and I'm so fucking sorry it took me so long to appreciate that.

This a load of bullcrap, it is equally important as a father to spend time with your kids and be involved in their upbringing. Some father's, including mine just delude themselves that they are away all the time because they are working so fucking hard. What's the use of money if your dad knows nothing about you?
