During class last week, my philosophy professor was talking to us about George Yancy's "Black Bodies" and, more specifically, about him being in an elevator with a white woman and how she was visibly scared of him and how that made him feel uncomfortable and that this behavior is typical to the experience of black people. My professor then makes a snide comment, saying "Well, I have one criticism of Yancy in this situation. He's failing to consider the impact gender may have on this situation. She may have been scared because he was a man and she would have every right to considering all the things men have done to women."

I was in shock. How is it okay to discriminate against a gender when it's not okay to discriminate against a race? This is the type of thinking that irritates me. The vast majority of men aren't rapists just like the vast majority of blacks aren't going to attack her. I almost want to say something to him but I've heard he will take points away just for disagreeing with his beliefs (feminism, that eating meat is bad, etc.).
