I keep trying convince myself that I'm not a modern day slave but am I? I knocked up a girl in college did the "right thing". Got married and made the best of it. She dropped out and we had 2 kids by the time I finished my bachelors and we were super broke. Over the last 13 years I've work 2 jobs and or ran 2 business's plus a day job to dig our way out of the financial hole we were in. She refused to go back to school and only worked part time. I'll spare you the details of how shitty the marriage was but 13 years into it she cheated on me and I started researching divorce and planning an escape.

Basically over the years I worked super hard and made countless sacrifices to pay off debt and provide for my family. I worked more than any of my friends and had minimal fun just to make a better life for my family. In speaking with my lawyer I discover that because I worked so hard during the marriage that I will be expected to work that hard after the marriage.

Currently if you add up all the debt I worked so hard to pay off and double it that is what I currently owe her just in alimony not including child support or 1/2 the assets. In other words every month I continue to pay her bills now I owe her 3 more weeks of paying her bills. Marriage without equal earnings is broken.

Even if we had a great marriage how on earth would I be able to have a fair relationship with someone who I am essentially borrowing money from just to provide for? There is such a disparity in power, how could ever dare argue or disagree with someone who holds my future over my head?

I keep trying to figure out a honest and decent mans approach to solve this but there isn't one.

In the end she is as much a victim as I am. She didn't choose to be my owner. When I told her what I had learned she didn't believe there was any way that was actually true, even to her it seemed crazy.

As it stands now I'm laying very meticulous escape plans with many contingencies. I still have all the power because I can always refuse to work but even that has consequences. She is dependent on my cooperation and in many ways she has a tiger by the tail.

Why do I owe her the benefits of being with me after the marriage but I receive no guarantee of any benefits from her during or after the marriage not even her faithfulness?

Am I just a drama queen or is marriage actually real slavery?
