My experience isn't as life-ruining as a fake rape allegation, but it stuck with me for life.

When I was a kid, I was playing with some other kids in an indoor playground. A girl accused me of hitting her, and all the other kids immediately surrounded me and started cornering me, asking why I did it. I kept denying it but no one would believe me, and some of them even got their parents involved.

I was like 6 or something and just started crying because I didn't understand why everyone would just believe the girl and completely demonise me with 0 evidence. My parents just apologised and then took me home. I don't blame them for not standing up for me since they were also under the scrutiny of all the other parents, but ever since then I've been very careful in my interactions with females to protect myself.

I know that I am terrified at work of facing unfounded accusations by a woman. If you asked me over a year ago, I would have laughed that that....say that nobody would believe such a thing because I am incapable of doing anything like that and it couldn't happen. Then, November of last year I had someone make a horrid accusation about me, saying I rubbed up against them and made lewd comments. This was a day after I gave them some feedback that wasn't too good. The ensuing investigation was terrible, sent home for several days while they interviewed everyone in the group she was a part of. One person said I was jerk and thought I might be racist because of how I said a particular word. Another person said I called him a jackass (which I didn't...I said exactly..we all have our jackass moments...what's important is how we learn from same). In the end, the allegation was unfounded (mostly because I am thankfully on camera 24/7 at work but also because this lady had an apparent history of making such allegations). The bulk of this, I was kept in the dark over until the very end. She even sent me a text message trying to bait me into a reply essentially saying that you know what you did but also thanking me for a number of things....just so bizzare but I immediately called HR. In the end however, cleared of any wrongdoing with respect to her, the stigma remains with some people treating me different, others seeing me and being surprised, they thought I had been fired, a 26 years reputation working with 100s of women and thousands of men that someone was so easily able to take a blow torch too. I was also written up for unprofessional comments due to the other stuff solicited by HR. Prior to this, I never knew what it felt like to be truly victimized and yet I do now. I often get depressed at the idea that anybody can say anything about me and make any sort of claim and I am virtually powerless to do anything about it and I could potentially lose my career or more. I actually like I was vicitimized twice....by her allegation and by the company I work for who didn't once see me as a victim even after conducting their investigation and finding it didn't happen. To be written up for bullshit was terribly in it's own right (I have never, not once been written up), the guy who implied I was racist was the whitest guy in the group (among quite a few who were black and had no issues with me) and never mind my wife is black and my children are mixed with one adopted who is black. Nobody from HR even seems to care that someone did this to me...very non-chalant that the "process worked" when in truth, with respect to their investigation, I was lucky somewhat. The lady that made the accusation resigned and has moved onto to finding new people to exploit with zero consequences. Later I found out from a corporate HR person they shouldn't have written me up for the comments but there wasn't anything she could do at that point. It was probably the most painful period I have had to endure and there were days I wish I was fired because then maybe I could have sued her for defamation. The mind just goes to these dark places and now I have days where I simply cannot stand to be at work (a job I have whole heartedly loved throughout my career). Sorry for the rant but I think it's important to share my story so if you are sitting here today thinking this can't happen to you.....it CAN!
