I have no idea the cost involved in doing a DNA test but this seems like it's a good idea that will probably be included in the future when genetic disease screening becomes commonplace.

With DNA testing determining the biological father,all question of parentage would be removed.Also DNA testing can reveal possible inherited health conditions that may affect the child in the future.By refusing DNA testing, mothers are not only denying the child the ability to associate with their real fathers, they are also placing the health of their child in jeopardy. Such mothers are placing their reputation ahead of the health and well being of their child. Whatever happened to the "best interest of the child".

You guys are selling it wrong. To get mandatory DNA testing at birth within the next 2-3 years, you should sell it as a wonderful opportunity to create a national DNA database :)

Proof of fatherhood is a human right. If the father wants a test, so be it.

I don't understand why is this yet an issue. I am a female by the way. As a mother I would be doing my child a disservice, denying him the right of the medical history of his true father.

Certain genetic anomalies can falsify paternity AND maternity testing. Chimerism is an example. While it is rare, there have been cases of women being identified through genetic testing as NOT mothering the children that they've delivered. This really doesn't come to light with men, since paternity can easily be credited to someone else if testing doesn't confirm it.

Let's say this policy does become standard. Let's say we have two chimeric individuals, one male, one female. If a woman, who has not undergone any in vitro treatments that would indicate that she was implanted with an embryo that wasn't hers, shows up as not being the mother of her child. This sets off alarm bells and people look deeper into the situation. They eventually find out that she is a chimera and she maintains her status as mother of the child. If a man shows up as not the father of his child when genetic testing is conducted, it is assumed that the mother of the child has cuckolded the man. This information likely ruins the relationship, breaks up the family and shames the mother who has done nothing wrong and no longer can receive support for this child.

Now, this can really be applied to any legal matter where genetic testing is used as a lynchpin to justify an action. I'm sure at least a few guilty chimeric individuals have been exonerated due to conflicting biological evidence. I figured I'd just put this information out there to let those who think DNA testing is foolproof know that is not completely so.

Mandatory paternity testing for all fathers is unnecessary, and could probably be ruled unconstitutional as a an invasion of privacy ("The right of the people to be secure in their persons").

However, father-child-mother testing should absolutely be a mandatory part of the proceedings of any parenthood-based court cases (e.g. child support). I'm actually kind of baffled that that is not already the case.

This is a logistical nightmare. What if there's no father on the scene, or he's dead? How can this be compulsory? What if the child is born at home? What if the father can't be present (due to incarceration or military or job obligations)...they would have nothing to compare the baby's DNA to. How soon after birth must the test be complete?

Who PAYS for the millions of tests each year? Is there even the capacity for that? The DNA labs for crime scene processing are already massively backlogged.

Instead of a law for ALL babies to be tested, there should be a law that allows for men to obtain the baby's DNA if there's any cause for contention of paternity. That seems more sane.

has anyone of you ever tried to talk to a woman about that .

i did once and she threw a shitfit. it was actually one of the longest fights i have ever been in. stood my ground, though nothing was resolved at the end.

all i want to say is, that the public discussion about that will be interesting.
