He's possibly one of the two biggest stars in the world and one of the most well known sports stars in the world. Every club would want him if possible, people fill stadiums literally to watch him anywhere in the world and he brings in sponsor money because they want Messi using their brand. Not only that players will sign just to play with him.

If all these people complaining every time there's a tournament actually started really supporting those women by watching games and paying for tickets they'd start getting paid more. But most of them couldn't name you 5 female players/teams if you asked them.

Also, most of the salary is determined by viewership like most entertainment. Ticket sales count as this. When women's soccer pulls the same viewers that men's soccer does, then they can talk about getting paid more.

Women’s football teams average about 800-1200 attendances per game. That’s not enough ticket sales to cover the cost of running the stadium for a day, let alone paying the players. All the money comes from subsidies from the men’s teams. Women players shouldn’t really be paid at all.

Personally I find it highly insulting for the makers of the infographic to insinuate that a single mens footballer could beat a team consisting of all the women players combined.

I can see their point though. These players are ultimately entertainers and they have a single job for which they are paid: To fill stadiums. Would a solo skills show by the top male player draw more fans (twice as many according to the graphic) as a demo game with all the women players? Is this really a case of "A woman's work is never done, but a man performs his tasks as assigned" as they suggest?

It's bullshit graphics like this that push women to think they have to fill stadiums and get big bucks to be worthy, skilled, and valuable athletes. Next thing they'll be saying "Women can fill the stands too!" And asking the women's league to adopt see-through jerseys so they can attract larger crowds and make more money for the league owners. They fail to realize that money is not the primary driving factor for most elite athletes. Men or Women; they all want to play an A-level game, which they both already do.

I had this debate in a Graduate School Economics class.

Female students were adamant that WNBA players should be paid the same as NBA players.
I started my counter with WHICH NBA players? Should WNBA all be paid the same as LeBron James, or as much as the players who come off the bench?
THEN I asked the male students if any owned team gear; if they had ball caps, or jackets/jerseys from their favorite teams. Eight out of ten MALE students did own some sort of such sports gear.
The answer from the FEMALE students was less than overwhelming. NONE had any such equipment from WNBA or soccer teams.
I decided to make it easier for the FEMALE students and asked them to NAME THREE WNBA TEAMS. Not a single FEMALE student could name a single team.
I asked if any had ever attended a game, college or pro. The males were unanimously affirmative, the females started getting hostile.
Then I asked if anyone could name a female professional or college basketball program that turned a profit.
You will probably not be surprised to know that I am sexist, racist, reactionary and my parents were never married. None of the females nor the teacher would admit they were wrong.

On a possible unrelated note. Pan & scan a WNBA game if you get chance. It looks to me that over half the audience is MEN and THOSE MEN are closer to MY AGE (I'm 65).
I was astonished by this until I talked to a High School basketball coach. His argument is that MEN my age started watching basketball before the ABA (red/white/blue ball & three point shot) even came into existence. The game was DIFFERENT! Jerry West and Oscar Robertson passed the ball and shot from the field. They fed the ball to open teammates. The "Slam-Dunk" was a FOUL! It was actually a finesse game.

Guess where you see that kind of basketball played today?

Yep... It's almost like stepping back in time with the added bonus of seeing some good-looking young women in shorts! (Sorry, I HAD to sneak that one!) The undeniable truth is that we enjoy watching the game played the way we saw it in our younger days.

The problem for the WNBA is that those guys (OK, US guys) are getting older and some of us are dying off. That means a large chunk of their clientele are not going to be purchasing tickets in ten or twenty years.

Their revenue stream is small and dwindling. Women are not supporting the game and the men who are supporting it, won't be around for long.

I have no idea what the solution is.

I agree that it is disgusting that Sport and Media Stars get this sort of money for doing nothing very important. Could you sell $84 million of tickets to watch a surgeon cut out cancer, or for any of the silent army of people that maintain the National Infrastructure and Communication systems that allow people to attend games and notice people like Messi. It is a hideous distortion of life to reduce all humanity to a cash generation model, and active steps need to be taken to change this shabby model. I know that actually most of the Worlds Major football clubs cannot sustain the levels of remuneration they are currently awarding players, and I consider the pure monetisation of the game a betrayal of every fan of the sports concerned. Men should walk away from such sports in the same way they are starting to walk away from women. They are outrageously expensive inessentials that drain resources and give nothing of substance in return.

Having said that, the women here are out of Order too. When I was a young player we would train and play every week for fun, with no outside support, and with fees to pay for being in the club. I played Rugby rather than football, but it was the exact same principle. All the girls we knew refused to be interested in Sport and condemned us as men who spent our time playing with our balls - Odd shaped balls in our case - as Rugby players. Now we are supposed to be desperately interested in the fact that some women want to play the game, and are condemned as misogynistic if we have the same interest in them as they had in us 30 years ago.

Translation--women should get an equal share regardless of any contribution made toward the share. In this case, women's teams are under no obligation to generate their own revenue, women are entitled to make up the difference by transfers of money from the men to the women.

women's football is barely watched.most football... well attest here in the uk is payed by sky sports. if no money is made in woman football, they will not show it as much as men. sky tends to pay for their ads and for them to be on their tv lines.
