Autism is the ADHD of today.

[–]Lethn 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago* (41 children) | Copy Link

I don't dispute that Autism exists or not, what I do find though is that the sudden and dramatic increase of highly Autistic people is suspicious. The author seems to be being pretty disingenuously suggesting that 'logical thinking' and seeing the bigger picture is linked to being Autistic.

You know what, I think I need to go and have a proper read on the actual condition of Autism because I suspect there's a huge degree of misinformation and bullshit going around about this condition and I've been meaning to do it for awhile now.

[–]anticapitalist 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (36 children) | Copy Link

I don't dispute that Autism exists or not

It only exists as a label/construct for alleged behaviors & feelings.

Allen Frances: The chairman in charge of creating the DSM-IV

"Mental disorders don't really live ‘out there’ waiting to be explained. They are constructs we have made up - and often not very compelling ones."

-- Allen Frances in “DSM in Philosophyland: Curiouser and Curiouser” in AAP&P Bulletin vol 17, No 2 of 2010

Thomas Insel: Former director of the NIMH

“Diagnoses are based on a consensus about clusters of clinical symptoms, not any objective laboratory measure.”

-- Thomas Insel @ psychologytoday.com

In other words:

  • Being accused of autism (even by a psychiatrist) is not evidence of any real/physical illness.

  • Some of the people accused of autism may actually be born with some type of problem, but being accused itself is not evidence of that.

[–]Lethn 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (35 children) | Copy Link

These fuckers who have been spreading this bullshit have some explaining to do.

[–]theQuandary 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (34 children) | Copy Link

Let's not get aboard the conspiracy train quite yet. We know ALS, lupus, and a host of other diseases exist without knowing their actual cause (in fact, we suspect some of them can be caused by several different things). Despite not knowing, we still group and treat them together until we can finally discover the mechanisms at play.

The same thing is true with mental illnesses. We may not know the cause yet, but grouping similar symptom sets together and attempting to treat them is the only option until researchers can find the physical cause. This can also be beneficial in discovering the cause or causes because if a single treatment works on all cases, we can be more certain of their similarity (and the treatment helps reduce the search area) while treatments that only help parts of the group can help identify differences in the disorder.

Nobody likes the current system, but I believe it is better than no system.

[–]anticapitalist -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (33 children) | Copy Link

without knowing their actual cause

That isn't the issue. The issue is whether something is a real/physical illness or purely a made up construct.

If something has physically measurable damage or physical loss of function, that's a real illness. In contrast "mental illness" is purely a construct of the mind.

  • "psychiatric diagnosis still relies exclusively on fallible subjective judgments rather than objective biological tests"

-- Allen Frances, 2013

And psychiatry's claim that behaviors/feelings are "illnesses" is moral.

(ie, science will never be able to prove such.)

In other words, declaring that a behavior (or feeling) is an "illness" is making a moral judgement that it's bad.

eg, no one would try to claim "hard work" or "heterosexual porn" was a mental illness because they view them morally as good.

That's out of the realm of science.

Example: the "mental illness" called "transvestic fetishism."
This is the idea that it's fine to masturbate to straight porn (or all sorts of other types,) but that masturbating to transsexual porn is a mental illness.

Such a moral opinion can not be proven by science.

[–]shzftw 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (30 children) | Copy Link

If something has physically measurable damage or physical loss of function, that's a real illness. In contrast "mental illness" is purely a construct of the mind.

The "mind" is a manifestation of physical neuronal pathways. Just because we can't measure it yet doesn't mean in can't be measured.

And psychiatry's claim that behaviors/feelings are "illnesses" is moral.

No one is passing a moral judgment on a diagnosis. A diagnosis is an identification of certain attributes that describe a certain phenomenon. You're the one passing a moral judgement.

[–]anticapitalist 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (29 children) | Copy Link

Just because we can't measure it yet doesn't mean in can't be measured.

Even if we could (someday) measure the mind itself that'd only show one person was different than another. (Not physical damage or physical loss of function.)

ie, that's not evidence of any "mental illness" because:

  1. Different != disease.

  2. Cause & effect. Measuring that someone is different somehow doesn't prove (eg) they were born that way instead of chose it or because that way do to real life.

Next, actual science has physical units of measurement & thus accuracy/repeatability. Saying that it's plausible to measure the brain & make assumptions about how that effects the mind is not the same.

No one is passing a moral judgment on a diagnosis.

In reality the DSM is not a list of behaviors/feelings which exist, but those considered bad by the state/APA.

And that is passing moral judgement.

[–]shzftw 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (28 children) | Copy Link

From your post history it's obvious you have a bias against psychiatry and psychology in general.

Next, actual science has physical units of measurement & thus accuracy/repeatability.

Psychiatry has it also. It's called symptoms.

In reality the DSM is not a list of behaviors/feelings which exist, but those considered bad by the state/APA.

I see you're not happy about your diagnosis. Don't worry, you can still live a nice life.

[–]anticapitalist 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (26 children) | Copy Link

Psychiatry has [physical diagnosis with physical units of measurement.] It's called symptoms.

Incorrect. You must have missed these quotes from earlier:

Allen Frances: The chairman in charge of creating the DSM-IV

  • "psychiatric diagnosis still relies exclusively on fallible subjective judgments rather than objective biological tests"

-- Allen Frances, 2013

Thomas Insel: Former director of the NIMH

  • “Diagnoses are based on a consensus about clusters of clinical symptoms, not any objective laboratory measure.”

-- Thomas Insel @ psychologytoday.com

you have a bias against psychiatry and psychology in general.

  1. The topic is not psychology (the study of the mind) but psychiatry (assuming behaviors/feelings which the APA dislikes are "mental illnesses.")

  2. Every side has a bias, including you.

And bias doesn't make anyone wrong. eg, I'm biased against rapists & kidnappers, it doesn't mean I'm wrong.

[–]shzftw1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

“Diagnoses are based on a consensus about clusters of clinical symptoms, not any objective laboratory measure.”

How does this statement not prove my point. You can't measure a symptom, doesn't make it any less valid.

which the APA dislikes

Again, the APA doesn't like or dislike anything. They come up with exact definitions of certain mental phenomenons.

It's you who is projecting your negative feelings about mental health.

[–]anticapitalist0 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You can't measure a symptom,

You can if it's physical, eg damage to bones, organs, white blood cells, etc. Swelling of joints, rashes caused by bacteria, etc.

the APA doesn't like or dislike anything. They come up with exact definitions of certain mental phenomenons.

Again, it's not all mental "phenomenons" but the ones they dislike which are called "mental illness."

[–]shzftw1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You can if it's physical, eg damage to bones, organs, white blood cells, etc. Swelling of joints, rashes caused by bacteria, etc.

I think you should look up the difference between a sign and a symptom.

Again, it's not all mental "phenomenons" but the ones they dislike which are called "mental illness."

Dislike is not the proper word to use here. They identify mental/behavioral phenomenons that are either extremely atypical, and/or hurtful to the person / surrounding people.

[–]anticapitalist0 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

They identify mental/behavioral phenomenons that are either extremely atypical

That's irrational, & the same "reasoning" used to claim gays were mentally ill.

Really being different, even extremely different, is not an illness.

Being different alone is not physical damage to the body or physical loss of function.

, and/or hurtful to the person / surrounding people.

That's 1) a subjective opinion 2) a moral judgement that it's bad and 3) an assumption of guilt.

Notice #2, especially.

[semantics about 'symptoms' vs 'signs']

That's not relevant & the truth is all sorts of physical damage is listed as symptoms of physical illnesses. eg "coughing up blood" is a symptom of lung cancer.

[–]shzftw1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

That's 1) a subjective opinion 2) a moral judgement that it's bad and 3) an assumption of guilt.

A schizophrenic that locks himself in his home because he is paranoid or one that makes people uncomfortable because he is completely unaware of personal space is a valid objective judgement about his behavior in the context of society.

That's not relevant & the truth is all sorts of physical damage is listed as symptoms of physical illnesses. eg "coughing up blood" is a symptom of lung cancer.

Coughing up blood is a sign of lung cancer. It's not semantics, it's you not using proper terminology for a very clear concept.

[–]anticapitalist0 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

or one that makes people uncomfortable because he is completely unaware of personal space

That's a subjective opinion, not evidence of any illness.

And there's nothing objective about it. In actual sciences what's objective has physical units of measurement & thus accuracy/repeatability.

because he is paranoid

Who's "paranoid" is a subjective opinion.

about his behavior in the context of society.

This sounds like an Orwellian way to say someone is different than the norm. And again that's irrelevant: different is not a disease.

Coughing up blood is a sign of lung cancer.

It's listed commonly as a "symptom" of lung cancer and if you want to use different language I couldn't care less.

  • "Symptoms of lung cancer... Coughing up blood."

That's not an argument that I'm wrong. Thank you for surrendering the debate.

[–]shzftw1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

In actual sciences what's objective has physical units of measurement & thus accuracy/repeatability.

You're not the one that makes the definition of what is an actual science or not. Psychiatry is a science. Cry all you want. It's still as science.

Who's "paranoid" is a subjective opinion.

Feelings are subjective by definition you idiot. Paranoia is a state of mind. At the moment, it can not be measured objectively. It can be observed in the patients behavior and in their narratives.

different is not a disease.

According to your definition. However your definition is wrong because you are a nutcase.

It's listed commonly as a "symptom" of lung cancer and if you want to use different language I couldn't care less.

If you purposely chose to use the wrong terminology it's up to you. The fact that it's commonly listed doesn't make it any less wrong.

It's not a debate. You make up your own definitions of words and well defined concepts.

You being butt hurt about your diagnosis is clearly hurting your judgement.

[–]anticapitalist0 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

different is not a disease.

According to your definition. However your definition is wrong because you are a nutcase.

If "different was a disease" then gays would count.

And all sorts of minority groups.

But that's irrational bigotry, not science. And your personal attacks are not arguments that I'm wrong.

[no arguments for anything]

I explained things (eg that actual science has physical units of measurement & thus accuracy/repeatability) and you didn't make any argument that I'm wrong.

If you can not argue why your beliefs are true, they probably aren't.

[–]shzftw2 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I explained things (eg that actual science has physical units of measurement & thus accuracy/repeatability) and you didn't make any argument that I'm wrong.

I said symptoms and behavior are the measurements used in the context of psychiatry because it a science based on the mind. Observation of said symptoms and behavior is an accurate/repeatable way to diagnose a mental phenomenon.

You are wrong. Happy now.

[–]anticapitalist-1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

and behavior are the measurements used in the context of psychiatry

That's not rational. Your subjective opinions about other people's behaviors are not "measurements." There's no physical units of measurement & thus no accuracy/repeatability.

What you're doing is just assuming (pretending) that behaviors which are morally disliked are "illnesses."

Really no behavior, or "misbehavior", is an illness: there's nothing to physically examine.

[–]shzftw2 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

There's no physical units of measurement & thus no accuracy/repeatability.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Observation#Observation_in_science

Here you go. Observation is in fact a part of the scientific method.

Your definition of science is wrong. A science without physical units is still a science. It is a qualitative science but a science non the less. You being butthurt about it, doesn't make it false.

[–]anticapitalist-1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Observation is in fact a part of the scientific method.

I obviously agree. I'm saying that pseudo-scientists misuse the word "observation" to mean their subjective opinions about other people.

[something] without physical units is still a science. I

Incorrect. With no physical units of measurement there's no accuracy/repeatability.

[–]shzftw2 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Incorrect. With no physical units of measurement there's no accuracy/repeatability.

Are you stupid? You come with the same false premise that you require a physical unit for accuracy/reliability.

Your statment: « With no physical units of measurement there's no accuracy/repeatability » is wrong.

Visual observation of consistent behavior and thought process is an accurate/repeatable way to diagnose a mental phenomenon.

You can be butthurt all you want. This statement is true and makes psychiatry a valid science.

[–]anticapitalist-1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Visual observation of consistent behavior

You're failing to understand accuracy.

You don't have any measuring tool to get something accurate like "3.6 units of good behavior" or "4.4 units of bad behavior."

Without physical tools & physical units of measurement all you're doing is making up subjective opinions & pretending they're "measurements."

[–]shzftw2 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

all you're doing is making up subjective opinions & pretending they're "measurements."

Is me observing a person punching you in the face a subjective opinion? What if 100 people saw the said person punching you in the face. Would it still be subjective then?

You can be butthurt all you want. Observation of behavior is scientific. Could said observer misinterpret a situation? Yes Doesn't change the fact that visual observation is a valid tool in the science that is psychiatry.

[–]anticapitalist-1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

What if 100 people [alleged something]

They could lie. eg when protestors are attacked by crowds of people who hate them. Ask the crowd to describe the situation & you'd get a different answer/perspective about what happened.

That's not a measurement.

a person punching you in the face

That's a criminal accusation, not a scientific measurement with a physical tool/measurement.

If there's any actual evidence for that, eg it was caught in video tape, convict them. No "psychiatry" is needed.

[–]shzftw2 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

They could lie.

Assuming a doctor has personal integrity he won't lie. Your moral judgement is not welcome here.

It was caught in video tape, convict them. No "psychiatry" is needed.

Exactly. By this logic a psychiatrist could film the behavior of a person to make an accurate diagnosis.

Your arguments are unfounded. You have an evident bias against psychiatry. Stay stupid good sir.

[–]anticapitalist-1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

. By this logic a psychiatrist could film the behavior of a person to make an accurate diagnosis.

Wrong. You could film an alleged crime and convict someone in court. eg, it could be smoking weed.

That isn't evidence of "smoking weed disorder".

If some people got in a fight that isn't "fighting disorder."

he won't lie.

Doctors can lie too.

Although I obviously wasn't talking about a doctor, but the "100 people."

Moral relativism is a slippery slope. This entire subreddit is based on the relative morality of men's rights. Should we release the criminals from prison on the grounds that their mental state isn't scientifically bad, just different?

If we want to take this idea a step farther, it is easily provable that ALL human governments are founded on persecution of these and other minorities (in fact, should systematic and continual persecution cease to happen, then the government would de-facto cease to exist).

Is there an objective standard of "correct"?

There must either be an objective morality (the universe is moral) or a collective morality (the majority determines what the limits of morality are). Individual morality only exists if no collective exists (no groups, unions, governments, etc).

If there is an objective morality, then whatever it says is correct is correct by definition, If we accept that there is a collective morality, then the idea of mental illness follows quite logically.

If your argument is against part of the collective morality, then make that argument (but realize it has little to do with the process of mental illness classification and instead address the definitions used by that process). If your argument is against the idea of collective morality, then I would love to hear your basis (it would make for an enjoyable discussion).

[–]anticapitalist 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I didn't say it's bad to make moral judgements, I'm explaining the psychiatric industry is pretending their moral judgements about other people are scientific physical illnesses.

Autism is a pretty meaningless term at this point, essentially just means what nerd used to.

[–]theQuandary -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Autism is known to be linked to older parents (but especially mothers). In the past couple of generations, women have been spending their 20s trashing their bodies while living the party life and then try to pull the hand brake and have their kids in their 30s. The result is that a whole host of defects (autism being just one of them) start showing up at much higher rates in their children due to these choices.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=autism+%22parental+age%22

[–]Khorib 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Same goes with older men trying to have children in their later years.

[–]theQuandary 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You are quite correct, but a disproportionate amount of that influence rests with the parent who carries the child to term.

A child with a 60 year old father and a 25 year old mother will have far fewer risks and complications than a child with a 25 year old father and a 35-40 year old mother.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Tons of self diagnosis or just over diagnosis in general?

I mean as long we don't start medicating people over it.

[–]FinFihlman 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Both.

[–]GoHoMoThrow 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And part of the problem with that spectrum is people can't make up nicey nicey shit and tend to speak their minds.

Linus Torvalds, the Linux guy - will openly say "this code is shit" and women, who contribute far less I might add, are seeking to take his own code away from him because he doesn't put on kid gloves and go "congrats! Gold star for trying!"

The link to IQ is rather strong. People with high IQ tend to have higher AQ scores (up to the borderline autistic range where there is a drop). Since men make up the majority of people with higher IQs, it seems natural that their distribution for AQ would also be higher.

I believe that there is a definite difference between functioning and non-functioning autistics. Forcing them both into the same diagnosis seems rather unscientific. Most functioning autistics want to interact (at least to some degree), but don't have the skills. Most non-functioning autistics don't want to interact (which raises the question about if they don't have the skills or don't want to use them).

Yeah, kind of. Your brain atleast, but your body might be more female..

[–]xNOM 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's basically your brain being TOO manly.

For a good explanation of male and female thinking that might result in someone claiming normal male behaviours are autistic see the Illimitable Men take on the matter here

fuck, 37.

[–]Korinthe 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I got 35.

My wife and I have joked for years that I have undiagnosed autism. We are currently in the process of getting a diagnosis, which is very difficult for undiagnosed adults. Not like it would change anything about my life, but just knowing for sure would allow me some peace of mind and perhaps more awareness of how I interact with others.

Funnily enough my son, who started school this year, is also being watched by the schools SENco for ASD - something my wife and myself have been picking up on since he turned 3.

I was diagnosed at 33 after 3 years of therapy to help me though problems related to my psychological abusive Ex and general learning how to socialise with others in better ways. When I got told by the mental health nurse I was seeing for the therapy that she thinks I'm high functioning Autistic, everything sort of made sense finally. It didn't change anything but it was nice to have a label to what makes me different to others.

It also helps in that my nephew is showing similar behaviours to me at his age so they can help him sooner if he needs it.

[–]Korinthe 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Its scary how similar things are.

I have had clinical depression since my early teens (now 27) and have discussed it with a couple counsellors along the way...

My last counsellor had a feeling that my tendencies are what is holding me back, since I have gone through a real bad time with my depression and anxiety in the past 3-4 years.

It sounds hella narcissistic I know, but I often times wish I could just drop 50 IQ and be done with it. A lot of the problems I have which have been identified by numerous counsellors are linked to abnormally high IQ (154)

This is why I've found getting any sort of diagnosis is difficult since a lot of traits are shared with ASD.

6.

Does that make me an idiot?

[–]ChaosOpen 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

No, you were an idiot before.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

However, if this were tumblr, you'd be able to claim you were autistic and all the perks(attention and unwarranted self importance) of having a mental disorder without actually having to deal with autism. I don't think an actual autistic person actually celebrates the condition the way a SJW faking it does. I know some SJW claim that epilepsy is the coolest thing to happen to them since FemFreq retweeted their comment once, however, as someone with it, it sucks and I don't enjoy it. I imagine the autistic crowd feels the same about their condition.

I am fascinated by dates

What does this even mean? Fascinated how? On the concept of dates or the date itself? What sort of dates? Going out with someone? The day / month / year? The fruit!?

And if everything just gets one point whether you chose 'definitely' or 'slightly' then what's the point of having those choices? Why not just 'agree' and 'disagree'?

I scored 25.

[–]theQuandary 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Those questions are why you got a 25....

Ha thought someone might say that

[–]Wargame4life 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

30 years ago this would be groundbreaking.

unfortunately its only "New" or "controversial" if you are an ignorant moron who believes gender is a "social construct", non idiots have long accepted that autism and autism like tendencies are as much a property of gender as is height (i.e not exclusive to one gender but a massive difference between them driven by genetics)

I remember reading an article somewhere where an SJW was whining that fewer girls being diagnosed with autism was some sort of discrimination against women.

[–]Jaykaykaykay 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

On average slightly more autistic, but i´d be that men would cluster a lot more at both ends of the bell curve than women.

I've heard murmurs of an "autistic/Aspie" backlash against feminist thought policing looming on the horizon. They won't survive that on top of the backlash from gay men (who are sick of hearing that we're misogynists and that we owe them for victories they had nothing to do with) and men of color (who are almost always disproportionately persecuted in moral panics, which are what feminism is made of). It will be glorious.

[–]tallwheel 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Autism is extreme male brain and Cluster B personality disorders are extreme female brain.
