Or married fathers who don't spend 24/7 of their time with their wives.
[–]ziekktx 41 points42 points43 points 11 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
I don't give a fuck. I've got little girls 3 years old and I'll take them where they need to go. I've been in both the men's and women's, and really don't care who wants to give me shitty looks.
If women were walking around nude, maybe there would be reason to say no men. Instead, the men's room literally has a decent chance of a kid accidentally seeing a dick. Sure, these women who made this happen "care," but in a shallow way that doesn't consider repercussions.

Good point about seeing a dudes dick lol I often forget about urinals as a lady
[–]Nougat 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
When my son (I'm the father) was about six, I took him to the mens' room at the zoo. He stepped up to a urinal. Shortly after, an elderly man stepped up to the urinal next to him, standing way too far back, with his pants dropped way too low. Basically exposing himself. And then he was trying to get a look at my six year old's penis.
I put myself right in between them, and that's as far as that went. I'm a different man now, and today I would have been much more forward.
Which brings me to this realization: The thing that first comes to mind when thinking about some women's "public restroom perv fear" is the conventional wisdom that "many and only men are pervy." But another important subtext is that "it's okay for those pervy men to perv on each other, regardless of age, as long as they're not perving on women."
Honestly, the whole notion of separate-sex restrooms is ridiculous to me. The number of people who get off on peeping in restrooms is surely a tiny fraction of the whole. Wouldn't we all be "safer" from the handful of restroom pervs if there were more people in the same public restroom? Is there some culture of public "extra-stall" nudity in womens' rooms that I'm not aware of? (There's no such culture in mens' rooms, for anyone who's wondering.)

If women were walking around nude (in a public restroom, of all places!!), I still don't see why that would be a reason to say no to men. It's like, what's the definition of "public" again?
[–]ziekktx -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Bathrooms are not public space.
[–]garglemesh42 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Public bathrooms aren't public? Who knew!!
There's a reason they have stalls, you know.
[–]ziekktx -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I can't even tell who you're trying to mock. Be clear if you're mad at me for taking a girl into the women's room, or what your concern is.
[–]garglemesh42 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I was just making the point that the restrooms themselves are public spaces. As in, they're open to the public.
It has bits that are private, yes - the stalls, but in bathrooms that aren't single-occupancy (those have locking doors!), the every part of the room that's not a closed stall is a public space.
I'm not mad at you for taking a girl into the women's room. Why would I care about that? When you kid has to go, they have to go.
[–]ziekktx -2 points-1 points0 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Ignore the downvotes, not me.
An easy rule is, if you cannot take a photograph, it's not public. Even a mall bathroom is still private property and therefore private spaces. The owner has posted intent for who may enter each location, and that's done there. If caught, the security can ask you to leave, and if you don't, you're trespassing.
I'm unaware of any bathroom which is a Public Place.
As for if you were mad at me about the bathroom, you'd be disappointed to see how men taking their girls out without a Parole Mommy present are treated by some. It's very few, but it stays with you when it does. The same ladies who will say how sweet it is that I let mommy sleep in will turn in a heartbeat if they can't see what you're doing for a split second.

My god, what could happen if a child glypsed a naked body! It could ruin their lives!
Fuckin American puritans. At least here in Oz I can take my kids to change rooms or toilets with out the world ending.
(Sorry non-crazy Americans, I know there are plenty of you).

It's not morals, it's how quickly the law can rape me and others in the ass.
If she said something outside about seeing a penis, a woman could call the cops and I'd be facing being arrested and charged, and if the random guy inside happened to be a prior sex offender he could be going back with a brand new felony.
It's about not having my life destroyed because if some crazy laws. I suppose you don't have those, no sir.
Edit: and I did say "facing." some police would rather "be on the safe side" and make the arrest, which would be on my record unless I pay to have it expunged.

Sad reflection of society. A room for families does not allow men, because men aren't considered family. That said, it doesn't appear to allow children either, only women. So although it shows a man, a woman, a boy and a girl, family appears to mean women in this case.
I guess it was just a matter of time before women and children first dropped the pretense of being about children.

My thoughts is that someone added the bottom sign without "permission". I.e., it isn't an official sign - it's vandalism.

More like "NO CHRISTIANS" or "NO WHITES", nowadays.
After all, since Heterosexual White Christian Males have historically held the power in society, it's impossible to be racist or sexist against them! /s

[–]Funcuz 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
So men with children should simply let the kids piss on the floor. If families don't include men then we're pretty much fucked.

[–]PurpleViolettron 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's also the handicapped restroom...So what you actually need is for a man in a wheelchair to go there with his female caretaker and go "We can't really to go into the larger restroom, we need to use this one." It shows the issue with this immediately. I mean, it also works if you have a woman in a wheelchair with a male caretaker, but I think man-in-wheelchair shows the idiocy of closing off the handicapped bathroom to men.
[–]BruceCampbell123 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If it's a room only for women, why not just make it a women's bathroom?
[–]MikeSogyny 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]screwthepatriarchy 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Is it really that difficult to take your child into the bathroom of your sex, regardless of their own? Jfc.
[–]turbulance4 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes. They learn they are not suppose to go in there and don't want to. I have a 5yo like that.
She can usually go by herself, but some have the faucet too high for her to reach.
[–]A_User 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Then it's not a family rest room, is it? It's another women's room.
Idiots.

[–]alang2009[S] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, it's a sticker
[–]TheRabid 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Rip off sticker? Cover up sticker?
[–]alang2009[S] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
I believe it is a sticker that was placed on the door by the staff of the mall
[–]Men13 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Doesn't look that way to me. Looks like vandalism. The main image explicitly has a grown male in it - very clearly saying that it's a place for men as well.
I think this is the addition of an over-zealous woman who didn't like the idea of men there, but not of the mall itself.
Maybe you should ask them? Can you tell me which mall this is?
[–]Mitschu 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I tell ya what, I don't know about other people but I always carry a "Men Only" extra large sticker around in my wallet to slap on doors to venues that I want to restrict women from, that coincidentally is the same size as any other professional placards that might be on that door.
Occam's Razor. The mall started out with a unisex family room, but after receiving several complaints about sharing with men, hastily retracted the unisex status by cheaply putting a new sticker underneath the old one, leaving the old one in place most likely for legal dodging of building code requirements.
Much simpler and more likely than a vandal is going around with "Women Only" stickers to slap on bathroom doors, but carefully aligning them underneath the old sticker instead of covering up the unisex sign or marking out / covering the male figure on the sign (you know, vandalizing.)
[–]Men13 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Apparently you don't know how to Occam's razor. And you're intentionally misrepresenting what I said - as if I claimed that a person would go around all the time with a "women only" sticker in case they need it. I think that would be a strawman? Like a textbook case?
Anyway, I'm thinking more of a regular mall goer who had enough of arguing with men who "dare to enter" the family room and who keep pointing out the sign to shut her up.
So after a few arguments like that - she made a sticker for the sole purpose of putting it there (and not, as you claimed, "just to walk around with it in her wallet" or something)
Also:
do you really think a mall would leave 2 contradictory signs one under the other (actually, 3 if you include the one on the right) that just leaves them open to complaints (without the man in the image, they would get much less complaints - why not scratch it off?)
Do you really think the all will write "women's only" on the handicapped restroom that used to be for both sexes? Do you think a mall needs that kind of publicity? (barring a handicapped from the restroom they used to be able to use).
No, it makes no sense that the mall put it. I never visited OH, so I don't know if they are that crazy there - but I doubt it.
[–]Men13 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I just called the mall and they indeed confirmed that they have no such sign on their restrooms, and that family restrooms are open to both men and women.

This is the Dayton Mall in Ohio
I feel you fail to understand what is required to make a family. Or are you completely ignorant of the reproductive process?
[–]Tmomp 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Institutionalized sexism, plain and simple.
[–]Lethn 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Normally it would be easy to dismiss this kind of thing but honestly? It says 'family' and even includes the male picture. Some angry feminazi clearly put that up.
When we get rid of these double standards only then will I be happy.

Hardly. It's an example of petty, unenforceable stupidity and, as other posters have noted, may very well be fake or an act of vandalism. The reactions in this thread are examples of people getting worked up over nothing.
Even if the sign is real and was placed there by store personnel it isn't something to get in a tizzy over. It's just another example of there being stupid people everywhere.
[–]Sabz5150 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I guarantee a Whites Only sign stuck above the bathrooms or water fountains would be on the evening news. Oh but its a vandal, nothing to get worked up over.

Or remove the "women only" sign
