Same ideation everywhere. Female journalism is on the rise, as such so is proportionally crimes against female journalists, but to a lesser number per quota than crimes against male journalists. What do we have to do? Reduce crimes against female journalists. Those male deaths don't really count do they.

Hey, Guardian, you can't take this declining alcohol consumption ratio and just assume it's because women are drinking more. It can also be because men are drinking less. Changes in ratios alone don't tell you much about the changes in the underlying raw numbers.

According to the article, women and men are drinking roughly equally, so why target one sex specifically? Why not target over drinking regardless of sex?
The article says women now are drinking more than women over 100 years ago, but nowhere did the article mention increased alcoholism. The article hasn’t even shown there’s a problem that needs to be solved.

What's amazing is that feminists tell us that "it's more dangerous than ever for women" while also drinking more, taking more drugs, having more casual sex, and putting themselves in riskier situations. It's almost like they completely forgot about how their "caution to the wind" attitude in the 60's and 70's welcomed opportunistic crimes.

Meta-analyses are rife with handwavy bullshit statistics. There isn't any real data to look at here, to get to the actual data you have to dig into the references, many of which are paywalled. But it's not hard to just google the gender differences in alcohol related illness.

According to the CDC men are almost twice as likely to binge drink, binge drink greater amounts, binge drink more often, are more likely to be hospitalized due to alcohol consumption, have increased injury, violoence and other harms associated with alcohol consumption, etc.

More than 3/4 of deaths from excessive drinking are from men.

So I don't know HOW this study is bullshit, I just know it is.

To facilitate quantitative synthesis across varying indicator definitions, we calculated a single metric, the male-to-female ratio, to express the relationship between male and female levels of alcohol use and related harms. This sex ratio represents the relative, not absolute, difference between males and females. A value >1 indicates greater alcohol use or more alcohol-related harms in males compared with females. For two indicators, age of onset of alcohol use and alcohol abstinence, the ratio was reversed. Sex ratios on each of the 11 key indicators were calculated separately for each birth cohort in each study where data were available. For sex ratios based on binary indicators, estimates in which both the male and female prevalence fell below 5% (n=39, 2.4% of all estimates) were considered base rate outliers and not further analysed.

Sensitivity analyses indicated that this exclusion did not impact the overall findings. All sex ratios were logarithmically transformed and all meta-analyses were carried out on these logarithmically transformed values, with back-transformation for reporting purposes. Log sex ratios for binary indicators were considered equivalent to log risk ratios and SEs were calculated accordingly.

SEs for each (log) sex ratio derived from means of continuous indicators were calculated using formulae contained in Friedrich et al. 83 Pooled (log) sex ratios with 95% CIs were calculated separately for each birth cohort with STATA (V.12.1). Significant heterogeneity, as assessed by the I2 index, was evident. Thus, random-effects meta-analyses were carried out and statistical heterogeneity was handled using the Knapp-Hartung approach Cornell et al. 84 Random-effects metaregression analyses were carried out to determine how much of this heterogeneity in sex ratios was explained by birth cohort, controlling for important methodological characteristics. These characteristics included age at the time of data collection, world region, study design and indicator timeframe. These analyses were carried out and are presented separately for each of the three broad alcohol indicator categories. Formal tests of publication bias were not applicable in the context of the current analysis.

This all reads like bullshit data manipulation to me. basically, "we made up a metric and called it "sex ratio". We chose factors that were gender-neutral and weighted them heavily so the data matched our narrative."

Edit 2: the study uses 3 broad categories (prevalence of any use, prevalence of problematic alcohol use, alcohol related harms). The gender data is only graphed for the first category (any use). The data for the other categories is not shown at all. My guess is that "any use" has much more parity that the other categories, so the other categories are hidden. There's no reason to combine these categories without showing the individual data first, except to make the overall "gender ratio" appear to have more parity.

The generation they're talking about 91-00 isn't drinking more, they're drinking less. More men drank in the past, while that's still the case this means the closing of this gap and a downward trend would suggest that men have walked away from it faster. This means we should consider putting more effort on women because what we're doing is already causing the current generation of men to drink less.

It's weed by the way, my perception is that more men(including myself) are getting high instead of drinking, I haven't drank in nearly 10 years but I'll get high. I was born in 92 and often weed is our party substance over beer, lots of people still drink but this seems like a common habit in my generation.

The likely issue with the narrow scope is it misses that a problem most likely just transferred from one thing to another.
