Well let's not forget that a lot of women did work really hard on the homefront of the war effort.

However, it's not in the least bit surprising that the photogenic, lily-white, probably quite affluent woman who made it onto the poster couldn't hack it. Those uncommon women who actually do hard manual labor don't usually look like models. They look like someone who works for a living, and that doesn't make a good recruitment poster.

Who fucking cares? She wanted to quit a dangerous job and become a cellist, and I say good for her. That sounds pretty sensible to me.

One point on this - Rosie the Riveter never would have been a thing if not for a combination of unrelated factors.

The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 established 44 hour week, (revised to 40 in 1940) so in production, the same amount of product required the effort of more people.

More importantly, the act banned child labor.

It was only after that occurred that the remainder of the workforce, men, were sent to war - many drafted.

This was also happening at a time of industrial advancement, with the addition of appliances to the home which reduced the amount of time spent on household chores.

So, employers were limited in who they could hire, and how many hours they could work them... right before a huge number of men stopped earning labor wages and dropped down to military pay, then were sent overseas... and women gained the ability to spend more time away from home.
Had employers been able to hire boys instead of adult women, and work them longer hours, would there have been as much work for women?
Had husbands and fathers not lost income in joining or being drafted into the military, would the women in their homes have felt the need to seek employment?
Had they had to go home to a set of tasks which were as involved and laborious as they had been twenty years earlier, would women have been able to take on outside work?
If none of those factors had occurred, I wonder if as many women have chosen to work those longer pre-FLS Act hours, especially since they would have been competing with men and boys for those jobs.

She made a logical decision.

A decision she was allowed to make because she was a woman. Millions of men would have done the same . . . if given the choice.

But no, women are always the primary victims of war.

Another strong message that a lot of women prefer softer jobs to more dangerous ones, including very famous feminist icons. Those who do more dangerous jobs should as such be rewarded with better pay even if they are male.
