The gender equality debate is riddled with countless ‘gaps’ of different designs, levels of importance, shapes and sizes, and at various stages of being closed.

The STEM gap. The gap in childcare. The gap in political leaders. The pocket gap, in home ownership, in app designers. The orgasm gap. And the infamous pay gap, to name a few.

But one gap, that impacts every single male in existence, which is rarely (if ever) discussed – is the life expectancy gap.

It’s a gap that tells us, no matter what country you are from, no matter if it’s a developed or developing nation, or from any continent; men will have a shorter life expectency than women.

Yup.

Sometimes it’s four years, sometimes its ten (!) but there’s always a gap, and it’s always the man who pays for it.

Sadly, this universal gap in life expectancy remains disinteresting within the world of gap-based-politics.

At most, ‘it’s their biology’ you’ll hear, as the gap is waved away.

And this is true, biology is part of the gap – but mens’ biological vulnerabilities are not a big enough part to explain all, or even most, of the gap.

Nor is such a thing a reason to do nothing at all.

Professionally, I’ve worked with numerous vulnerable groups, to close similar gaps.

When I worked with the NHS, to explore black people’s genetic vulnerabilities to diabetes, at no point did anyone say ‘well it’s their biology’, and announce case closed.

So when it comes to men living shorter lives, why should such a thing be so nonchalantly accepted?

And why won’t people ask, what else is in the gap, if not just biology?

So I’ll ask you, why are men living shorter lives than women, in every country in the world?Why do they have highly mortality rates, at every age?

Like for workplace deaths, it's not equally distributed enough towards women for us to care about. We'd need to turn each workplace victim into a woman with AI to frighten the audience for more than twice a year.

Men DIE earlier.
Men work HARDER jobs.
Men suffer most VIOLENCE.
Men face prison MORE.
Men face homelessness more.
Men get LEAST support in hard times.

And even worse, many "equality" indexes have hard coded this particular gap into their baseline. So in countries where the life expectancy numbers are closer than the average difference – of course men never live longer, but sometimes it's only a few years of life lost at least – the measurement comes out showing that men have "privilege", and that inequality and oppression exist. I'm looking at you, United Nations.

"Biological reason" is the excuse/answer you got from your teacher when you are 15yo and camplain about men living shorter.

The kind people who say biology is the reason why men live shoter is not people who really want to get to know why men live shorter or/to fix that gap.

They give a fuck about wether the reason is biological or not, they just say "it's biological" to dismiss men complains.

Furtheremore any1 who says that it's a biological reason is lying, there is no way to know to isolate the biological factor to know how it affects life expectancy.

In order to do that you would have to take an individual, men or women, and figure out how long he/she would livre if she/he were born the oposite sex. The same individual, with the same genetic code, eating the same amount of food, with the same diet, working the same amount of hours, in the same work, sleeping the same hours, waking up and going to bed at the same hours EVRY SINGLE DAY. How do you do that? You can't. they are lyers

The only way to "prove" that men live shorter than women is taking the statistics, whatching that men live shorter and saying that the live shorter for biological reason, but that is not how the scientific methodology works whatsoever. That's just bullshit.

In the UK until not long ago women retired on the same pension, 5yrs before men. Then, depending on what part he country they lived in, went on to live up to seven hrs longer than men on average. That's a 12yr gap living in retirement. This was never talked about. If anything men living shorter should have meant men retired earlier than women but no, the opposite happened

Naturally, the differences in lifespan gap between males and females are not discriminatory,

it just helps in specific biological functions and balancing the natural economy.

this is because the male's purpose is to spread their seeds,

and then the females need time to process these seeds, so those extra weeks, is actually for the eggs / baby to develop

However, it's important to note that these extra years women live, usually occurs in an old age, filled with ->

~ diseases, ~ weakness, ~ loneliness, ~ life support machines ~ medications ~ hospitalizations ~ guilt of dependence ~ etc ~ etc

so why do you guys want to live on this planet feeling miserable with all those ailments,

Do a lot of feminist deny men die earlier? I don't get the point you are trying to make here.

Like the wage gap, there are many factors and those factors are created by societal standards and culture.

So what are you argueing for? Should men and women both shut up and just accept these outcomes? Or is it fair for both to point out the societal causes for these gaps, and want to correct them?

Also if your goal is trying to muster support for improving mens life expectancy, using it as a device to discredit feminism is both ineffective and quite ghoulish.

Hi u/TheTinMenBlog I am your big fan but this one is almost misleading. Yes, biology is a factor, but a minor one: less than 25% of the gap. Studies show that over 75% of the gap is caused by non-biological factors.

I dont think it's that much of an issue, it's only by a few years and as shown, it's mostly down to biology, though I'm sure a part of it is men working harder jobs.

You know I don’t know much about men’s and women’s bodies or their hormones so this was really fascinating. I mean who thought a hormone can make your immune system weaker. The human body really is strange and complex.

I've recently heard that having children increases a woman's life expectancy even though it ages her from 1 to 10 years. I knew it was true with rodents so it's not too surprising that it would be true for people.

Also read that part of the women living longer part was that single men have a shorter life span than single women. Part of the reason was lack of socializing with others and deep friendships. Another was that many single men don't take care of their health, often raised without learning how to cook, clean, ect.

I think that if a single man knows how to care for himself, cooks, cleans, stays vigilant with mental and physical health, has good friends and family, he should have a life expectancy as that as a woman.
