I compliment people’s shoes. Mostly cause I look down when I walk. But also I work with teenagers and it’s less weird to compliment their shoes. Sometimes it really makes that kids day. Boy or girl.

This is truly sweet that she would do this and it just touches my heart to remember there are beautifully gorgeous women out there like this, but honestly... I hope I never personally come across a lovely woman like that.

Society has bullied me for too long, society has kicked me down into the dirt and curb-stomped me my whole life, then told me it's all my fault. I can barely take a compliment from the male colleagues I respect deeply. I can just barely take a compliment from my female colleagues I respect deeply.

It's not a nervous about women thing, I'm completely fine with women, love being around them... I just can't handle positivity. I don't want to cry victimhood but I'm so damaged (feels dirty and attention-seeking to say that) from the way society has treated me my whole life that I can't handle the positivity. I'd just nervously and awkwardly like brush it off or deny it and that just worries me because I wouldn't want my negativity and personal incapabilities to impact such a person and bring down their day by dampening their happiness.

Well, that's an awkward tidbit of emotion to open up about. I feel like I have to soften the blow with some kind of cynical joke. Hey guys, isn't it funny how the entirety of society vilifies and hates white men and how everyone says this subreddit is a toxic cesspit of misogynists and racists? Ain't that funny? Or depressing, I'm not sure.

I love this on so many levels. One day, I was being my old classic insecure self and I was trying to communicate to my boyfriend I needed some words of affirmation. Compliments. All that jazz.

And for whatever reason, I realized I did not compliment HIM anywhere near what I should be. We grow up being taught you gotta compliment girls - tell them they're pretty, interesting, funny.... But that men are these strong, confident creatures that are just so SURE in themselves.

I can see the difference it has made by me complimenting him more and more. He walks taller. He wears certain t-shirts more. He makes an active effort to be healthier. So I started to do the same with other men I come across. To find genuine things I like about them. I'd say yeah, I deal with about 20% of the dudes thinking I'm hitting on them or owe them something, but seeing someone perk up because I love their Futurama jacket - it's SO AWESOME. Because I've been there (even as a girl) and having a compliment turn my day around.

Men, the world doesn't give you enough credit.

When I was in High school (german equivalent is called "Gymnasium"), I got a drivers license. In germany you have to take a test with an optician to make sure your eye sight is fine. Mine wasn't. I had to wear glasses from this day.

My first day back in school, I wore glasses. I was really insecure about them. I thought people would make fun of me because I didn't wear glasses for my whole life (at this point ~16 years).

A girl in my math class basically told me ("Nice glasses"). It's hard to translate this, but it wasn't ironic.

As a male, this was the first compliment I've had received on my looks from another person ever. Sure, some relatives always tell you "You look great" and "You will get so many girls". But this doesn't matter. They don't mean it. Not really.

But this was the first time in my life another person actually, genuinely complimented me. At this day I was 18 years old.

This meant so much to me. This was about 5 years ago.

This is where this anecdote ends.

If you want to know how it continued:

I helped her in math as well as I could during class. Her grades improved greatly. (In american grades she went from a C to an A)

We never talked out of class. Looking back, I'm not sure if the was actually interested in me or just used me to get better grades.

A few years ago someone called me ugly, in a very matter of fact way. I remember that day and think about it sometimes. When I do it makes me sad still.

I met an estranged family member recently and their daughter said I was handsome, like a disney prince.

I kind of think kids are the arbiters of truth as they are not socially conditioned to make people feel good.

I think about that alot more now. I also started to sing songs in the street and be friends with talking animals.

Kind words mean so much. The person that posted this originally is a lovely person.

I once met genuinely friendly feeling service at the pharmacy, probably because they could see I'm on antidepressants. Still made that huh, that was weird effect and it really did make my day. Usually "friendly" service is just some scripted pattern of shallow small talk people follow and it doesn't feel special like that.

I try to give complements at least 3x a week to strangers. Whether it's men or women doesn't matter. And i also try to give small talk on elevators asking how people's nights are going and giving them space to talk. Even if it's going awful It usually helps some to say it's going awful.

Occasionally I get thrown a "hey cool beard" or "nice tattoo" but 100% of the time its followed by "Do you have a minute for..."

The only time I get compliments are from the bullshit advertising companies that are trying to get you to donate money. Which I straight up refuse to donate too anyway because they take such a huge percent. If I'm going to donate the charity is going go be getting it all, not a tiny little bit after they take their cut.

This is the loveliest thread I’ve read for a while. I try and compliment my male and female colleagues on some aspect of appearance and the quality of their work at least once a week. Attractive women crave compliments on something other than appearance and it seems from here that men are v short on appearance compliments

I work retail and started out this way. I assumed that since I’m a middle aged plump mom type it would be safe to do so. But the number of men who took it to mean I was interested made for very awkward moments. My heart is broken for these men, to need so much that so little genuine kindness can send them into a tailspin. I still try to find a balance.
