I think it is because, while another man might be more of a threat, he might also be an ally, a trader, a source of information or knowledge...

A woman meeting a strange woman is meeting a competitor, in almost all cases, unless it's a wedding, in which case there is jealousy and resentment.

Because with men there is an underlying level of violence if someone gets too disrespectful. So men tend to tread carefully. On top of the fact that men ultimately understand there is something greater than them that is more important. If we spent so much time hating each other without even knowing each other, then we would never get anything done.

There is a reason why those housewives shows are so popular. It is just women tearing down other women.

men roughhouse while younger and suffer violence when being rude or out of line while growing up. So the default attitude is polite and friendly.

Wait, this is not true. Feminine solidarity is almost everywhere, and simps men help women first. Women most of the time have way more support than men . I will take foster familly as example... since its near impossible for a man to adopt a child there is way more foster familly by women for women and thats really bad for young men we have almost no support . Competition. Men compete with each other physically or financially, while women compete with each other socially.

If you think about the way the two genders fight differently, men will resort to physical violence in worst case scenarios. Social sabotage, or reputation destruction is rare because it doesn't solve our competition. In a brawl, the victor tells the loser to back off. Men are good at dealing with physical threats (a part of our evolution to warn off threats of other species or our own).

Women compete socially, either through degradation, reputation destruction, or social sabotage. Women are a lot more social than men, if you get your herd to socially dislike someone, the person who is disliked becomes the outcast and holds no social power.

Men have physical power, women have social power.

This is also most likely why women tend to be more obsessed with social media than men. Social media is a good way to show off your social status, achieving competition.

My history teacher asked us the same question in high school. He explained it as a social legacy from prehistoric times. Times where men had to work together to bring down animals was more dangerous than them. There was no room for enmity here as it would result in death. Women on the other hand had different roles. They were gathering where each individual gathered separately and not as a team effort. Thus beating other women was a desirable outcome for accomplishments. Men on the other hand had a shared accomplishment where some had bigger roles, but it was a team effort. The teacher also said this is why 3 women can't be friends without drama.

That's not always the case... Men are basically forced to compete with each other for everything they might want.

What happens is we have some sort of code, of widely accepted rules (women too but their code is different)... A man won't allow himself to treat a new man as competition just as early, and won't allow himself to use dirty tricks and lies. Also, a man can empathize more easily with other men.

When they aren't competing, a man can learn from other men and can form a very healthy friendship too. Lastly, men are supposed to respect everyone in the current society, there's lots of indoctrination regarding male behaviour. Women are different in that sense and they will, for example, socially isolate their competition.

This is so true. When I started my first full time job - I was in my early twenties and the youngest male in a mixed gender work environment. All the older men kind of competed to take me under their wing.

One man, a sociologist, told me to look at the women inside the room and follow their gaze when someone entered the room. When a man entered the room they barely looked up but when another woman came in they examined her from head to foot.

Another thing I noticed is that men were generally truthful and direct with one another. For example when I bought a new car that was a bit too fancy I was made fun of - but not in a hurtful way: the jokes were of the type: zogins is hoping to pick up more girls...

Women lied to each other or were bitchy. They never criticised anything another woman did- at least not to her face. I remember one case where one woman said that she had gone into a room with one male member of staff and he asked her to kiss him. She made fun of him and all the other women made fun of him and sided with the 'victim'. But the moment she was gone they started commenting about her revealing clothing etc.

It's kind of funny. Men assess women mostly by looks. Only later personality and other traits come into play. Women assess each other mostly by looks as well and typically, when two women meet, they tax the other to see who has the looks advantage. Whether you are the winner or the loser in that match-up, you probably don't like the other person, either due to resentment or feeling of superiority.

Men on the other hand do not assess each other by looks, for the most part, so they have to get to know each others' characters first.

Because Men tend to be direct and don't participate in the kind of underhanded psychological tactics that a lot of Women do. When a man says he hates you or likes you, he's most likely being honest and you respect them for being honest even if they dislike you.

With Men you get what you see. Whereas with Women, its harder to tell. Women can disguise what sounds like a genuine compliment into some kind of a slight against you, men don't bother with this cus we're naturally prone to risk taking. Men prefer confrontation over the psychological war of attrition that Women seem to prefer. I think the "male respect" is due to how thing can escalate very quickly between us, so both men show some respect to avoid this

Most normal men just have to compete over a single nice girl, or a job or something specific.

There are plenty of men who don’t like or respect each other from the get go, and plenty of women who do like and respect each other from the get go. There is no pattern on either side of the gender spectrum. There are assholes everywhere and good people everywhere, regardless of gender, race, or whatever other orthogonal trait. Anyone who actually hangs out with large enough groups of adults on a day to day basis can see that.

Why come up with crap like this when it’s clearly unsupported by evidence? Either cite some social psychology studies or GTFO.

Because women are highly competitive when it comes to male attraction even though it may not seem that way. This is why women compliment less attractive friends or fat ones because they know they aren't competition. This is also the reason men are shamed for dating younger women almost always from older women who can't compete in the dating market.
