I have two nephews, one is 9 and the other is 6, both adorable kids, and last month I went to their school with my wife to see them dancing on a school party.
I live in Brazil and this celebration is part of our costumes here. In June there are parties on every school, and there is aways dancing. The teachers choose the song, gather the children, and come up with some choreography for them to show their parents and friends on a weekend school party. There might be something like that on other countries too.
But the thing that bothered me was that both my nephews felt uncomfortable with the dancing, one of them didn´t even want to go last year. And I remember that I also hated that when I was a kid, but I just had to do it. Every parent just love to see their kids all dressed up and dancing.
And when the dancing started I noticed that pretty much all the boys from every grade looked very uncomfortable too. While the girls seemed to be loving it. They got the choreography right, with big a smile on their faces while the boys were just there, like it was a chore they had to go through. And I know I felt the same when I was a kid too.
I told my wife later that it just didn´t feel right for me. I mean, Why do we have to put boys on a place most of them really hate to be? Just because their teachers (all female) like to do it? Couldn´t they come up with some other activity for the boys?
========= UPDATE =========
Wow! lots of responses here! I didn´t expect that people would have so much to say about this subject. I´m just going to answer broadly to a few comments I read below.
I am not freaking out or overreacting about it, I´m barely reacting at all. I don´t think any of those kids is going to get scarred for life because they had to dance at school. I know people have to go though many humiliating experiences when growing up, and it´s actually a good thing that they do.
What struck me most about that day was the fact that every girl I saw was absolutely loving every minute of it. Gym classes, or reading out loud at the classroom, can embarrassing and humiliating, but its that way for everyone. I am sure that girls hate it just as much as boys, and yet they both have to get though with it.

Part of becoming a man is doing things that you don't want to do. Kissing Aunt Flatus. Shoveling a horse stall clean. Dancing in some stupid school play.
Embarrassment, humiliation and the way we learn to deal with it makes us into stronger individuals. Imagine a child that never experienced having to do something they didn't want to do - now imagine that child at their first internship. "Scrub the toilettes? I don't think so." "Well, Mr. Spoiled Brat, you can go back home to momma."
Hell, part of growing up is embarrassing your siblings or your children. I dreaded taking home a girl because I knew my father was going to make some embarrassing remark that was in fun, but still uncomfortable.
Quit making wimps out of our kids.

It's funny you should say that.
I've raised 4 boys. Without fail, they were hyperactive lego-playing, car-vrooming, rough housing hellions.
My daughter just turned two. I haven't changed my style of parenting except to buy her girly clothes.
She played with her brothers legos and cars and other toys until the day we brought home a tiny vacuum and kitchenette. So guess which are her two favorite toys now? That's right - the vacuum and kitchenette.
I changed nothing - she can play with anything she wants, but she would rather the traditional girl toys (oh, yeah - she has a baby doll she likes to stroll with) than her brothers toys. I don't care if she wants to play cars or dolls - it doesn't matter to me and I don't encourage her either way, and neither does her mother.
Like I said, I raised 4 boys. I can tell you right now, girls are different and any feminist that says otherwise is a liar.

If she does, I'll be the one teaching her. My wife doesn't know how to sew, but I took Home Economics to meet girls :)

Hm. Not sure how to respond.
"Part of becoming a man is doing things that you don't want to do" is exactly what being a man is about. It's about manning up and doing the right thing. Working in the rain for a shitty boss because you need to support your family. Taking a second job to put your kid through college. It's about doing things you don't want to because it's what you have to do. It's about protecting your loved ones. Family, Community, Country. Learning those things is part of becoming a man. I'm sure there are things necessary to becoming a woman, but I'm not qualified to speculate on them. I suppose raising children and domestic duties figure in there somewhere, but my grandmother is the one you should speak with - she's run the family for 60 years now and can tell you about the matriarchal side of family values better than I can.
Whinging helicopter parents that shield their kids from experience really grind my gears.

I don't have enough time to list the things I had to do as a child that were uncomfortable. School plays. Classwork on the chalkboard. Reading in front of the class. Showering after gym.
Quit making wimps out of our kids.

Wide open shower area, toilettes lined against the wall where anyone could see you pooping. At least that's the way it was in 1980's Louisiana.
