Assuming the table represents the relationship itself and we’re talking about a man and woman then what should each bring to the table?

Some things are universal - you should be a mature adult who can live on their own and take care of themselves and others, with the exception made for younger people and people with some health issues. You should have good communication skills and emotional management, both of you should have compatible values and plans on the future.

Other things generally depend on a person we're talking about. What I want my partner to bring to the table is different from my friend or cousin. Although even things I've listed aren't that universal and there are people who make it without them.

It’s going to be different for different relationships. In my relationship, we both bring open communication, good humor, and the desire to see the other person happy. I bring the money, he’s much better at managing the house.

My opinion? Loyalty, for a start. Effort. These things might look a little different to different people. Trust and communication. It's not necessarily gendered, although some women tend to be more creative and emotionally supportive while men tend to do more acts of manual service. Some folks don't even enjoy sex that much, but most do. Either way is fine, we shouldn't judge.

Each party should be able to do the following: Willingness to set the table, prepare the food menu, buy the food, cook the food, clear the table, clean the dishes.

If they don't or can't or won't...they don't deserve a seat at the table.

All partners should bring things like respect, honesty, communication skills, and emotional maturity.

Otherwise, what people want and need in relationships is different!

My partner and I value intelligence, shared beliefs, a willingness to compromise and be flexible where necessary, among other things.

At the bare minimum everyone should bring effort, communication, companionship and shared values. They should also want make their partner happy (with reasonable expectations obviously)

Beyond that it becomes a matter of personal preference and compatibility.

That is context dependent. But I reject any notion that because men are hornier, that greater sexual leverage adds to whatever the woman brings to the table.

Or poor. When I was dating, I dated an Archeologist, a Marine Biologist, and a Counsellor. All solid professionals. All decently compensated. A compelling reason however to why I settled upon my partner, was the fact she was more financially independent than the others. As she too had a real estate portfolio(all be it a small one). So I was certain in that aspect of finances, we were both compatible.

When we first started dating, I told her our relationship will go like this; two happy individuals. Then a happy couple. Then a happy family. It cannot go any other way. As I’ve always been a self sufficient, resilient person. So expecting the same in my counterpart, was the bare minimum. It’s been a fairly decent rule of thumb thus far.

Speaking for myself alone. I'll retain my platonic friendships, hobbies, independence, and habits of hygiene and household responsibility I have prior to a relationship. I'll also bring a matching enthusiasm for mutually satisfactory sex and a willingness to compromise on cultural and entertaining hobbies we share. I'll be accepting and receptive to their family and friends, and I won't limit their access. I'll be there to step in for moments of illness, weakness, and inexplicable bad days.

I expect the same.

The data doesn’t lie. Children from two parent households significantly outperform those who do not. One person should work to support the family and one person should stay home to educate the kids because in the US our education system is a joke. This is optimal and should be what society promotes. This assumes we want a strong and healthy society as a disclaimer🙄
