As the dumb idea that unless positions of power are divided equally between the genders then women are oppressed. Which conveniently ignores the scientific fact that men don't have an own gender bias (women do, men don't cause it didn't suit evolution for men to have an own gender bias). And also conveniently ignores the fact that power demands sacrifices to obtain, and a lot of women are just not willing to make those sacrifices to obtain it.

Patriarchy was relevant 100 years ago. Today it's just a catchy soundbite.

The system by which society as a whole separates and specializes each gender in specific roles and then confines them to said roles through both overt and covert social pressure. It was a system born out of the necesity of maximising the effectivenes the group as a whole in order to triumph over ofentimes very harsh and life thretening conditions.

The conditions of the fight for survival that led to the creation of the "patriarchy" (horribly loaded word btw) are something that modern men and woman have a hard time even understanding.

Sitting in the confort of your modern centraly heated home with running wáter and every convienience imaginable brought to your door, you have a hard time understanding what each of these roles implied. You say I would obviously want the role that had more power and control and respect. Well I would just love to see you go and work in a coal mine for 16 hours a day as you slowly kill yourself, to see your toes get black and fall off as you are marched through the winter with no shelter little food and forced to kill or be killed, see you bought and sold, used and abused on a whim as medievel serfs, see you go out in the night to defend your livestock from thieves and wild animals with just a stick.

Come back from that (if you survive) and tell me how awesome it was being a man back in the days of "patriarchy". Back when you were essentially a slave to your local feudal lord or chielftan and your life could be disposed of on a whim.

Yeah real awesome being a man back then.

Edit: For that matter I would love to see privilaged modern western woman try out the shoes of old timey wifes. See if they can handle the demands and responsabilities of running a home with no modern conveniences, see if you could shoulder the responsability to planning and engineering your foodstocks so your family dosent starve over the winter. See you learning how to be a vet to your animals, a doctor for your chidren, a chemist a botanist and a nutritionist. All the while keeping a family of 7 clothed and fed.

Go and do that for a year and if your family dosen't get sick and die or starve to death get back to me on how old time wifes had a life of simple drudgery and no responsability or agency.

Humans are anti-civilization and anti-society. It just works with social conventions and rules, men have to sacrifice themselves, women have to suppress their primal urges (hypergamy). We all have to fulfill certain roles, who fails to do that is a social outcast. What feminism so aptly calls oppression is nothing else than the reason why society works. Both feminism and TRP work hard on ignoring those things and act in a selfish way to gain more personal power.

I'm way late to this, but as a 90s era feminist ...

Patriarchy is a system that has historically given men both an edge and a disadvantage in terms of life. Men are expected to take risks and sacrifice to provide for their family, but they've also been the gender with a major role in shaping laws, social mores, etc. ... And they've historically shaped society to the benefit of their gender, because men are people and people are selfish.

What's always left out of this conversation is the idea of intersectionality.

Basically, you can be a man and still be disadvantaged. It's possible for other areas of your life (race, socioeconomic class, etc) to offset any "privilege" you may have on paper, and leave you at a huge disadvantage.

It can work the opposite way, as well - on paper, I'm a mid-30s woman from a working class family. I should be oppressed and all that.

In reality, I'm a reasonably attractive, white, married woman living in an upscale suburb. I couldn't be more privileged if I tried, and I thank my lucky stars every day for how my life unfolded.

A true patriarchy would be inequality of opportunity, not inequality of outcome. Most of human history can be reasonably described as a patriarchy, but our society cannot.

This is all a distraction anyway, as we live in a plutocratic society.

A system of checks and balances.

Women rebelled because it was a system they didn't have a voice in creating.

Not saying patriarchy doesn't have its upsides...but people naturally rebel when they feel they don't have a voice or impact.

It's a government system where the power is held exclusively by men. In a republic like we have, that would mean women can't hold office or vote.

EDIT: To clarify, we don't have a patriarchy. I'm just saying what a patriarchy would look like in a system that we have.
