Saying that Oscar Pistorius going free is an example of how the justice is fair [or positively unfair] towards men is no different than saying OJ Simpson going free is an example of how fair the justice system is towards African Americans.

I couldn't say much about the reasons why South Africans felt he should walk, but what is for sure is that outliers don't make a trend.

It's an outlier. Sometimes guilty people of all classes get light sentences or no sentences at all.

It's more appropriate to look at aggregate data.

At least in the United States, men get sentences 60% longer than women on average.

He got 5 years for shooting 4 bullets through a closed door at someone! Regardless of whether or not he thought that was an intruder or Reeva, its a crap sentence. The sentencing has in fact been appealed and is currently at the Supreme Court because its not the kind of judgement we want on our law books setting precedents.

He is GUILTY, regardless of whether he knew it was Reeva or he thought it was an intruder it is illegal to shoot through a closed door. In this case self-defence does not apply at all.

That was a case of temporary insanity. He had just recently finished a NIKE ad campaign where the slogan was "I am the bullet in the chamber...just do it". So he heard a noise one night (his wife) and decided to "just do it." He thought she was behind him hiding behind the bed, but she turned out to be the "intruder" that he could hear rustling around in the bathroom with the door closed.

Most people would shout "who is that in the bathroom? What are you doing?" Oscar just followed the NIKE slogan instead: "[put] the bullet in the chamber...just do it" and he opened fire, firing multiple shots through the bathroom door.

Fuck anyone on the other side of the door- I guess he just didn't care. Could have been a cat...a dog...a child...his wife...

In the context of South Africa, I think the issue is far more to do with the fact that he's white and that he's an extremely famous Olympian athlete despite his disabilities than the mere fact of being a man.

It tells you how society treat pro athletes and highly wealthy celebs. They have a different justice system to the rest of humanity. Look at OJ, was his experience typical for a black man in the justice system ?

Frankly, it's also the kind of collateral damage society has to put up with if its also going to have ubiquitous firearms and a presumption of deadly force being acceptable in self defence. Accidents (?) or killings passed of as accidents (?) are going to be commonplace events.

But don't try and tell me that if he was a poor black guy in SA with a public defender he'd have got anything other than a conviction and long sentence.

He's a famous athlete, living in a country where deadly home invasions are extremely common. South Africa needs him running more than they need to use him as an example firearm misuse/domestic violence (Yes he killed her; the reason is unlikely to ever be known).

I think it's more an example of how culture treats the elite/famous vs. the plebs than men vs. women. If Yolandi killed her boyfriend in the same circumstance, I think she probably would've gotten a lesser sentence.

It's always hilarious when feminist clowns point at cases of high status men getting lenient punishments and try to use that shit as an example of male privilege or whatever.

Fact: men are disproportionately locked up and given longer sentences. You making desperate attempts to find counterexamples involving athletes that already have a lot of respect in their communities doesn't change that.

What does famous and or rich people getting light sentences have to do with what anonymous normal people go through?

It's obvious to anyone who nominally keeps up with current events that if you can afford a top notch attorney you will probably get a lighter sentence than the guy who went to "lawyers r us."
