First, my answer: Sometimes.

Second, my response: ADALT vs AWALT is a bad analogy. There's no downside to driving defensively. Assuming all drivers might be bad drivers doesn't affect your interactions with them outside of the few seconds their car is near your car. If you're wrong, no harm is done to anyone. This is because driving isn't a social activity, so your opinion of the other drivers really doesn't matter to anyone other than yourself. No one can be hurt or mistreated on the basis of this opinion, and it won't prevent you from having healthy relationships or human interactions. It is even different in what it is supposed to "protect" you from, driving is a fast moving physical experience where a split second can be the difference between getting in an accident or not, where social interaction is relatively slow and there are lots of opportunities to learn about the specific details of the person you're interacting with before they have the opportunity to hurt you. You're also at risk of significant cost, extreme injury, or even death immediately after making a mistake while driving, whereas social interactions are far less likely to result in injury, death or financial ruin (at least not without lots of opportunities to bail).

No, I do not drive defensively. Now that doesn't mean I throw all caution into the wind. I still check my mirrors, and over my shoulder when changing lanes. I have this belief that we all fuck up, and hopefully both of us do not, and one of us will be able to stop it before it becomes an accident.

I don't drive at all for these reasons lol. I have awful coordination and would be really terrible at it.

Yes, I absolutely do drive defensively. I am in my car for a minimum of 3 hours a day for my commute, Monday thru Friday, and of course I still drive on the weekends (though thankfully for shorter distances, lol!). There are too many whackjobs out on our highways for me to not be aware of how to drive safely.

And before I get asked, yes I'm against the term AWALT because if taken literally it erases even the potential for someone who happens to have been born female to be an individual. Fwiw, I am against the term AMALT as well for the same reason. Neither sex is a hivemind.

However, I personally believe and have no problem whatsoever with someone saying EWALT or EMALT;

ENOUGH Women/Men Are Like That, and having this pov helps to keep one safe.

Driving defensively isn't assuming all drivers are bad. It is assuming there are enough that you will probably come across one every time you drive. Where I live it can sometimes be 2 or 3.

However, I drive mostly defensive and a little offensive. Mostly because driving defensively keeps me a safe distance from most cars, but sometimes the bad driver is too defensive so I have to drive around them. It works for me.

Acting as if All Drivers Are Like That is the same as acting as if All Women Are Like That. If you have a problem with one, why don't you have a problem with the other?

The assumption made when driving is that anyone is susceptible to making an accident, not assuming everyone is a bad driver unless it's clearly visible. More like assuming all women can make mistakes or could be a particular, not assuming right off the bat that all women are a certain way.

edit: So you clarified in another comment that "all women are at risk" is the whole AWALT thing. It isn't, it really isn't. It's more like an assumption that all women carry the same psychological principles because of evolutionary psychology and conditioning.

All Drivers Are Like That

All drivers are like what? All drivers are going to come across the center lane of a narrow country road and plow into you at full speed? No. Even though there are literally tens of thousands of cases when that has happened, I don't drive as if every driver I pass is going to do that to me, and I would wager you don't either.

And even if it does happen, chances are I'll be all right. My car has advanced airbags, crumple zones, and anti-lock breaks. I pay attention to my surroundings and have good reflexes, and I have car insurance and health insurance. It would suck majorly if I got into an accident, but eventually I'll recover, buy a new car, and drive again.

The bottom line: Nobody drives like "all drivers are like that." That would mean stopping at green lights in case there was a red light runner. That would mean wearing a 7-point harness and crash helmet like NASCAR drivers do. That would mean always following at 10 car lengths.

Being in a car means accepting that you may get into an accident, and being in a relationship means accepting that you may get your heart broken. Either way, you'll probably survive, so stop worrying and enjoy the drive.
