And to the person who said "women don't need to spread their legs": I'm a woman. I definitely don't need to spread my legs super widely, but in public transport, I need to strain my legs, because otherwise it'd touch the person beside me by spreading a bit if I let go. I can see that men might want to spread their legs even more though, just saying that we too need to strain.

One planes, at least, there is also that if you are over 6 feet and want to put your feet flat in front of you it tends to spread your legs because of the seat height. Want to not spread? Then you need to stretch legs forward and most seats lack that legroom. This is why I take the aisle seat so I can stretch my legs away and into the aisle (yes I move if someone comes around). I also do this because I was in a car accident that made it so if I leave my right leg bent for too long it hurts like hell, I need to stretch it every once in a while.

We are built like inverted triangles (shoulders wider than hips) so yes it is difficult and painful to keep legs together. We spread to keep pressure off balls but also to balance better and take the pressure off the hips since we are basically top heavy when sitting. It's literally a natural thing to do for us to sit without pain not really something we do just for fun.

The brains of men in western society seem to be commonly geared a certain way, we've seen that anecdotally on askreddit (the ever-present "men/women of reddit..." questions), but that gearing isn't purely nature, it's also nurture. Social structures influence parenting styles and teaching styles, which combine with natural psychological development to produce learned behavior. Learned behavior is then reinforced by interactions with peers.

It’s when men treat women in a condescending and/or infantilizing manner for no reason other than that they are women.
I went to a STEM school with about a 70/30 ratio. I saw firsthand the way female students were treated both by professors and by male peers in the male-dominated majors (civil eng, mech eng, aerospace eng, mathematics, astrophysics, computer science, software eng). There were absolutely occasions where female students were held to a higher standard of understanding than male students were.
The men I saw do this kinda stuff were not doing it out of malice, but as a result of the way they were conditioned throughout their lives to talk to women. When called out, some people (like myself) were apologetic, and took it as an opportunity to self-reflect on our communication styles and patterns. Others ignored the criticism, or became excessively defensive.
Several departments at my school were 50/50 or even female-majority, but only one department ever treated its male members with the same kind of subtle disrespect: the psychology department.

Aside from neither of those words being made up, "pussy pass" means "women getting a societal pass because of their gender". "Manspread" means "men sitting with their legs spread to show dominance" (or something). Only one of those things actually happen. Truth. I was once sitting behind someone that needed to be restrained. A teen boy who had a disability and kept hitting his mom (I guess the plane made him nervous?).
The father and flight attendant both looked at me with hopeful eyes as they asked me to hold his arms back while they tied a seatbelt around him... I kept asking repeatedly “Are you sure I am OK to do this?” And I kept talking and verbally declaring what I was doing.
After he was restrained he calmed down... and that was that. At the end of the flight we un-restrained him and off they went.
