Some info:

Abusing a public official (cops are included in this) verbally or physically is a punishable offense in Holland. She did both. Safety of the officers is the police number 1 priority in situations like this. This is completely justified and has gotten nothing but positive response in Holland. The "Handen af van onze hulpverleners (hands off our first-aid helpers/first responders" mentality is really high, the Dutch part is a common saying. Additionally, the police are the most trusted authority/organisation in the entire country according to this research published some weeks ago. They rate higher than judges, who in turn rate higher than the general public/other civilians.

Police here aren't feared like in the USA and disrespecting the police like this is severely looked down upon

Edit: i got some questions about why they needed 7 cops and still hit her. Those cops are there for crowd control to ensure the safety of the officers. This is standard procedure, control the abuser with as little as possible officers so most can make sure the crowd disperses.

Oh really? I had a cop threaten me with jail because I drove through an empty crosswalk when then light was green. He thought it was illegal, but he was wrong. I had another tell me to go fuck myself when I asked why I got pulled over. The reason she later gave me was, "Dirt on license plate". Another time I was handcuffed and put on the sidewalk for suspicion of drugs. I was a senior engineering student with no life, I had no drugs. I was late for an exam thanks to that. I had a gun put in my face for being on my cell phone at a red light. Cop claimed my phone was a gun. My favorite was when my parents thought I was depressed and called a family therapist for advice, so the therapist called the cops saying I was suicidal. They showed up at my apt with SWAT.

In the US, I believe that while there is some fear of cops, most people mistrust cops. I've met good ones. IME (living in a southern state) is that the rural cops (sherrifs) are much better. Theres less corruption. They are there to protect and serve. The city cops now, (and for some reason mostly the white ones) don't give a fuck about you. They just want to meet their quotas. I've heard some crazy stories about cops planting drugs/weapons to make an arrest. I don't trust a fucking cop to save my life at all. If I'm being attacked I'm going to handle it on my own and then deal with the consequences later. I'd rather be alive with a fine and a week in jail then dead or in the hospital. But then again, where I live, you have a right to defend yourself. We have excellent castle laws.

Black cops have always been really cool with me. They're in that first camp of "we're here to help people first and foremost." I've never had a bad experience with a black cop. Ever. But I've had a lot of fucked up experiences with white cops.

My point being is that cops aren't generally trusted, at least not in the south.

Interesting, it's odd that you would take a position that most people are disagreeing with and then not provide even a hint of proof to back it up?

That seems strange, and I personally would love to see this proven, because then I can say I learned something. I'd never be upset to be proven wrong, but saying "I'm too lazy to prove it but i'm totally right" is a convenient way of giving up.

You are conflating an individual human being with a monolithic entity known as a government. I am not the government of the United States of America nor am I the military of the United States of America. In every country on this earth there are individual human beings. Millions to billions of them and they do not individually represent the political or military organisations that govern them. There represent themselves as human beings. Human beings run the gamut from the best to the worst and everything in between. It is well advised to take into account the reality of human nature which is that all those possible states if being exist within all of us at all times. Who we are at a given moment in time is just that. It's who we are right then and there. It's not who we were a second ago not who we will be a second later. What I am getting at is this; I was taught that the use of force on a personal level follows a logical path of escalation. The first and foremost path being one of avoidance. Short of protecting yourself, other people or your property, there is very little logical or moral reason to use force. However, if use of force becomes necessary, the amount of force used should be such that the conflict is ended immediately or as succinctly as possible. While that may seem counter intuitive or excessive, it is usually just the opposite.

Abusing a public official (cops are included in this) verbally or physically is a punishable offense in Holland. She did both. Safety of the officers is the police number 1 priority in situations like this. This is completely justified and has gotten nothing but positive response in Holland. The "Handen af van onze hulpverleners (hands off our first-aid helpers/first responders" mentality is really high, the Dutch part is a common saying. Additionally, the police are the most trusted authority/organisation in the entire country according to this research published some weeks ago.

Police don't need prove to restrain or use force on an aggressive person who is evading arrest, that's the same here as it is in Holland. If this was a man you wouldn't cry misandry, the misogyny doesn't make sense. A person is a person. They obviously tried to cuff her and she resisted. This is the next step. Police aren't going to take risks infront of a crowd with agressive people trying to hurt them, male or female. Killings by cop aren't common at all in Holland, like i said this is not the USA. It very rarely happens, not even one this year. The 6 cops were there for crowd control, as you can clearly see in the video. This is standard procedure. As little as possible arrest while the others make sure the crowd disperses. Cops won't use excessive force on me or a loved one as, like i said, cops are the most respected and trusted authority in the country. They score higher than other people and even neighbours. Things like this are very rare and excessive force therefore even more. She could walk and stand fine, there was no excessive force here, just the most efficient way to handle the situation. Even if the arrest wasn't correct, she abused the cop. The arrest can be wrong all you want, we both don't know, but because she abused the cop this was completely legal and no one will even look into it guarenteed. You respect cops here, even if they're wrong. If you're wrongfully arrested and you behave well you will most likely go free, there's a reason our prisoners per capita is one of the lowest in the world. Our judicial system is great. This is not the USA.

Here's an article about our prisons closing because we have too little prisoners. People here don't have to fear cops or the judicial system so things like this are rare and severely judged by the public. You don't attack cops.

Im just hung up on the beating being warranted in any way, shape or form. It doesn’t de-escalate the situation at all. Its essentially senseless considering the means with which the police have to apprehend people. And, if its not senseless then its inefficient. The cop could tackle the lady, the other cops would swarm her, over power her, and have her in a squad car before the video is even over.

But fine. Maybe its a cultural disconnect, like you said. You always side with police no matter what, and I always side with not beating people for not much of a reason other than to hit back for the sake of hitting back. Just because someone hits you, it doesn’t mean you hit them back. Is it within the cops right? Absolutely. Again, that doesn’t mean he should do it. Look at the size of the cop compared to her. She is treated like a rag-doll when he handled her. Instead of doing all of that, making a huge fuss, causing people to run, the cop could have capped it and ended it there by tackling her to the ground, and cuffing her.

And look, the woman is completely at fault. She deserves her punishment in a court— or however you do it in holland. She deserves her time, and that, I believe, is justice. The root of that fuss is obviously coming from her, she is the biggest factor in the fuss. The thing is, the cops contribute to the fuss. If it was up to me, that would not be an officer’s purpose. You try your best not to contribute violence in a situation when you don’t need to and the officer really did need to at all. If you think he did, I still need you to rationally explain how a drunk lady can do more than a black eye on a cop. If she had a weapon, you would think she would have drawn it after a punch or two. But she didn’t, so maybe at that point you stop punching her and just cuff her. Then again, maybe not. You guys handle your women however you want, I guess. I won’t tell you what to, and what not to do with them.

The base of my argument is that I just believe the police can, and should do better than that. They shouldn’t have to beat people in order to get them to comply. Its not their job to injure criminals, its their job to apprehend them. The only times I feel it IS warranted is life or death situations, riots, or a raid. But, presumably you raid with guns, so I don’t know why there would be a beating involved. But I digress.

Finally, I guess I’ll apologize. I get a little emotional when I get in a “political” debate. Maybe it really is just cause we’re from different parts of the world.

How is one drunk lady a threat to six trained professionals. Here’s the disconnect: she was drunkenly swatting at him. He could have gotten a black eye. He also could have killed her— his blows have a helluva lot more force and his aim is a lot better than hers considering he’s sober.

the amount of force doesnt matter in this situation, if shes willing to attack an officer then shes unpredictable. she could have anything in her bag. its about not knowing what to expect your threat to do. once someone attacks you its not a matter of force its about defending yourself and everyone around you. drunk people are especially unpredictable. if someone swipes at your face or your eyes they can do permanent damage, why would you not deal with the threat as fast as you can? the only thing i've seen people say is "shes a woman, you're beating her."

Alright, I will give you that one. The unpredictability of a drunk woman is certainly relevant.

Let me argue with this: efficiency. If she whips out a gun, is it more efficient to a.) punch her multiple times, kick her on the ground, let her get back up, throw her back on the ground, and then pull out a baton— which is what happens in the video or b.) tackle her, let the rest of the cops swarm her and cuff her. The point is: after one or two punches, you would think the threat is eliminated. Like, I dunno how good you are at taking punches after you’ve already been tossed on the ground AND drunk, but generally it doesn’t work out that good. Add that to the fact that the cop is supposed to be training and is probably in pretty good shape, therefore his punches have a lot of force. And by the end of the video, she’s still not in handcuffs.

And I advocate for no punches! I believe that six trained officers should be able to dispatch one drunk lady! Right, so what do we do then? Do you beat her unconscious and search the body for knives and then drag her away, or...? Its mean to gage his character which sheds light on his argument. He said he would actually get angry at his mother for doing something wrong, and that she deserved it. Which leads me to believe that he thinks all cops have the right to engage in beating someone up, regardless of whether mom— or anyone else— did something wrong or not. As far as whether the officer is right by his law or not, I think, is kind of irrelevant. Whether he is legally allowed to use force or not, doesn’t necessarily mean that he should. I think in this particular case (obviously you judge it on a case-by-case basis) it was just un-warranted. There is power in numbers and six vs. one leads me to believe that the cops absolutely could have handled the situation better and justice could have been served just as well, if not better, than without the beating she took. When attacked he's allowed to strike back if he deems it necessary to defend himself. What you're doing is equal to people online asking "why didn't the cops just take the shooter? Stupid police brutality!". It stems from an ignorance of the danger a threat can pose and the effectiveness of methods in those situations.

A quick efficient way? What, like tackling her and cuffing her? Or, punching her four times in the face, pushing her on the ground, kicking her, walking away, letting her get back up, pushing her down on the ground again and then pulling out a baton— which is what happened in that video. That was efficiency? The video was 26 seconds long. Maybe, 20-23 seconds of it was the initial struggle. It took that cop 20 some-odd seconds to push her down twice. by the end of the video, she is still not in cuffs.

Ever tackled someone from 5 feet away? Ever been tackled by someone 5 feet away? It’s generally a pretty quick exchange. Maybe, 2-3 seconds from you hitting the person to the person hitting the ground. So, you shave 20 some-odd seconds from the exchange right there.

Next, the 5 other cops there also pile on to the woman. They pin her legs down, grab her arms and cuff her. The exchange may take a bit longer— the lady will resist, or maybe not since she’s drunk. Either way, they get her in cuffs.

Next, they toss her in a squad car and haul her off.

In my exchange, the cop dispatches the threat quicker and more efficiently than in the video AND quicker than the way you defined. the lady gets charged for assaulting an officer, resisting arrest, public indecency, disturbing the peace, public drunkenness, and on, and on, and justice is done. She does time, thinks about her choices, and hopefully sober ups. Society as a hole is better that way. That is, actually, how the law works.

But yea, you want to beat her up first. Yea, lets break a nose, bust her lip, make her lose a few teeth. Yea! That’ll teach that bitch... right?

Guess what? No good role model would accept being punched in the face and just take it. They're regular human beings. Injuries hurt them, they get scared when attacked. Had she had sharp nails she could have poked an eye of his, given him an infection or clawed him in the face. You don't worry about this because you weren't attacked, or maybe you've just never been attacked, but judging the perfect amount of force when someone is hitting you is extremely hard. He was punched by her, and decided to punch back to neutralize the threat. It was an adequate response, it wasn't going overboard.

You're also massively understating her attack. He only hit her with his nightstick AFTER she came at him again. Watch the video again and you'll see that's exactly what happened. And unlike what some on here claims, we don't see if he keeps hitting her after she's on the ground or not, so we have no reason to assume he did so if she stayed put.

It was not unnecessary. It was an adequate amount of force proportional to the threat she was posing. She attacked him with punches, so he punched her back. She came at him again, so he hit her with the nightstick.

As you admitted, you don't actually think he used too much force for the situation (You even said you'd applaud it had he not been a cop). You're only giving him shit because he's a cop and you think he should have taken the abuse for that reason alone. That's not twisting your argument, that's using your very own words.
