Might be unpopular on this sub, but I'm 21 and being homeschooled was the worst thing that could have happened to me. I grew up without any friends and I didn't understand social norms until I went to public high school. You do you but I thought I'd give you the other perspective first – I wish to God my mother hadn't decided to give me a solitary and lonely childhood via homeschool.

Make sure you they are very involved in homeschool groups and other activities with other children, especially when they are that young. My husband was homeschooled his entire life and is extremely social and can become quick friends with anyone. I was homeschooled through middle school and went to public school in high school and realized I was very far behind. So just make sure whatever curriculum you use is up to par with the grade level. From my own experience, I hated being homeschooled. But every child is different

I just wanted to offer a counterpoint to the other guy, and say that I loved being homeschooled. I still played sports and such, and sometimes took a class other places, but in general if your kids are at all academically inclined, its the best way to let them grow. I basically read and did math for a couple hours a day, then hung out with friends or read fun books or went camping or whatever. So much wasted time in school.

IMO, there's no substitute in an education for lots and lots of reading, and schools are great at turning reading into a job. As long as you pay attention to making sure your kids have social lives/circles, it's great. Wouldn't have done it any other way.

I'm a teen librarian and we have a huge homeschool following. I literally have like 18 kids a week in my homeschool programs. Many of them attend the same co ops, art, and athletics classes, too, because their parents met through the library and they've all teamed up. I definitely recommend seeing what your library offers. Most of my kids met through story time as littles.

I just started reading a book called, The Brave Learner, it's on Amazon and available as a kindle ebook. Great read about homeschooling. Also there's a fantastic reading list at Barbara Oakley's Reading List. She is one of the co-author's of the world's largest online class about skills for learning. Her reading list encompasses more than just homeschooling. She also recommends books about other topics but her focus is on the broken education system in the US (and elsewhere), and homeschooling.

Read the Brave Learner! I love that book :). I’ve got 4 that I homeschool :). There are so many pieces of advice and whatnot that make it hard to answer your question (it’s too broad in other words).

Where to begin? Start with learning your state’s homeschool requirements/laws. Getting onto a FB group for your area is the best way to figure that out.

Determine your “why” for homeschooling. This may evolve overtime, but it helps determine what and how you want to teach.

Research different methodologies and philosophies. There’s a more traditional “school at home” (which looks like a public school day, but done at home...if you get onto r/homeschooling this is pretty much what they support.), Charlotte mason, unschooling, so on and so forth. It seems daunting and it can be. Honestly figure out how your kids learn & how you teach best (do you need strict schedule, do you need something looser that is flexible for example).

How much do you want to spend? This can be (almost) free to thousands a year rivaling a private school education. There’s no wrong or right answer - it’s what you can afford and want to do.

Once you figure those out - then finding a curriculum that works for you. I like Cathy Duffy’s curriculum review. I use that as my starting point every year.

As for littles under 4. Don’t start too soon. I made that mistake with my first! Read lots of books together, go on nature walks, encourage curiosity, do lots of arts & crafts, let them help you with cleaning, listen to lots of different types of music (it can just be in the background, go to the park/museums/zoo/etc.

Check out the requirements for your state or country, first.

The naysayers and traumatized ones usually experienced isolation, educational neglect or religious indoctrination. That's something you can avoid. The social aspect is hardest, because homeschoolers are often kind of quirky lol. Options include co-ops, but also after school daycares, sports, arts, community events, scouts, playgrounds etc. If you have an introverted child, you only need a few. If they're extroverted, get them among people daily.

Nowadays through the internet you can get practically every material and instruction video for free (Kahn), so even if you don't know things, teaching then self-directed skills (reading, basic maths, questioning) and providing them with internet can get them very far.

For young kids, work on fine motorics and pre-writing skills (proper pencil grip), as well as pre-math. If they are already reading, you likely have a gifted bunch. Get thee to a library and let them pick. They can teach themselves anything, but it's up to you to show them what is out there to learn. Provide a rich environment - nature, stories, games (tangram! Chess!), internet access, museums (science and arts), theaters, and so on. Academics are supported by exercise and nature and time to do nothing.

Find out their learning styles. Some are hands on, some like workbooks, some like lectures, some resist anything that is suggested to them and other want to follow your lead.

Sometimes it doesn't work for some kids, families and situations, you can always switch between school and homeschool. Do what is best for you this year and reconsider each year (unless you're in the Netherlands, stupid homeschool laws there).

Involve them in chores. Having chores from an early age on is up there among high IQ in terms of predicting future success.

As another counter to the above thread, I just started homeschooling my two (full custody) step kids because they were doing terrible in public school. They have been through a lot in their little lives so that is not typical, but the system totally failed them. They had a lot of social issues on top of being behind in every subject. We are in our second week so who knows how it will go long term, but we are in a charter school that has two on campus days per week, plus social events.

I’ll also second an above comment about finding a philosophy first. Finding a philosophy gives you something deeper to connect with and rely on, vs just looking for curriculums right off the bat that may or may not work. I love Charlotte Mason. And I also loved the book the Brave Learner!! It is a great first book to read about homeschooling.

Also, it’s pretty easy to talk shit about what your own childhood experience is so don’t worry too much about that whole comment thread above. Being “socialized” in public school has huge downsides, too.

We homeschool. Socialization gets brought up a lot, but to address this we have our kids in co-ops. They meet with large groups of other kids several times per week. Best thing is, their attitudes have improved.

My aunt home schooled both of her children till high school. They are both very smart & great kids. They are already off doing amazing things. There’s also a 5 year age gap between them, but it still worked. However, I will say that they are quite wealthy. They were able to travel around the world, go on “field trips,” pay for tutors if needed, pay for tons of supplies, they were in other sports or classes like dance, etc. They also went to an expensive private catholic high school. They’re also big into the church, so lots of functions with children.

I will also say that my mom worked at a children’s museum where tons of homeschool parents would come in. In our area there’s tons of mom groups, sports, dances, playgroups just for homeschooled children. Plus if you can put your kinds in classes that helps too.

It can definitely go badly if there’s not much interaction for sure. Or if you can’t teach something get a tutor at least. So if you do, look into if there’s groups like I mentioned above in your area.

I work at a school (not a teacher but in another credentialed position). I think a lot of parents think that they can homeschool their kids but I think they underestimate the amount of work and time it takes. Also, credentialed teachers actually have a lot of training and the average parent just does not. Some homeschool kids get excellent educations but the dirty little secret is that many homeschooled students do not.

Talk to them, sing, read... at 4 you can begin to teach them the letters.
Make them discover the society and others, explicate things.

If you do chose to homeschool, realize that not all children are “homeschool-able”. My oldest went to public school. My middle started in public school, but due to services we needed for him not being available, we wound up homeschooling. It took a YEAR AND A HALF to find a curriculum that worked for us. I home schooled him through 8th grade and he went to an alternative high school.

I attempted to hs my youngest. That did not go well. Even now, littlest says “remember when you tried to homeschool me and I didn’t learn anything?” Lol He’s doing great in public school. Listen to your little people. Don’t force them into something because it’s something YOU believe in.

I was homeschooled k-12, and it was awful. I had no clue how to handle the real world until I was about 25, and at 30 now I am still somewhat awkward and have trouble making friends. My kids are definitely going to public school!

I have no clue how to homeschool (yet) but I was homeschooled as a kid. It was the best experience ever and I think it made me a lot closer to my mom and made our bond stronger (abusive dad, single mom. My new step dad is pretty cool so it has kinda made me closer to him, too. He helped out with our school work from time to time). Growing up, I had dyslexia. My mom worked tirelessly to help me read. I couldn't read properly until I was older (like, 11) and we figured out some tricks to help me. My brother has autism and the doctors told my mom he would never read. She said screw that and worked non stop with him and, although slow, he can read and write. The doctor was amazed when he saw it because most autistic people with his level cant. We also learned more about the real world. My mom brought school into everything. She'd bring us grocery shopping and say stuff like "I have 5 dollars. These apples are $1.25. How many can I buy?" (Of course, just an example). I think it really helped me adjust to being an adult and being in the real world. Also, being around adults a lot helped me learn to be more respectful to adults and how to talk to them properly. Whenever she cooked she brought us into the kitchen and showed us exactly what she was doing, sometimes as kids we made meals with her supervision. We learned outside as well, we could go anywhere and not have to worry about taking a day off school. Our textbooks and teacher came with us:P My fiance and I want to homeschool our kids. He was bullied badly as a kid and we both figure school should be about learning, not a social competition. Theres after school programs, sports, clubs, a bunch of different things kids can participate in. I had a bunch of friends growing up. I think a big misconception is homeschoolers dont have friends, which is completely false. Another perk is that if hubby has a day off work or a vacation we wont have to pull the kids out of school or worry about if my work schedule lines up. We can just go on vacation or do whatever. Sure, it may not be big because we already know we wont be making much but even going camping for a week is fun. When I was a kid, it didn't matter if we went somewhere expensive. It didn't matter the toys we had, it mattered our experiences and just having a good time. Most of my favourite childhood memories are at my grandmas cottage or in a park. I think homeschooling is great and worth trying if you can afford to:)
