Last week I was chatting with this elderly woman (late 70's) in my community. The topic drifted to marriage and she mentioned how great her husband was (before he died). The guy was really supportive, they started businesses together; he didn't share her faith, but he supported her being dedicated. They had multiple kids together. She just kept talking about how warm and kind and sweet and patient her late husband was.

Then we got into the whole thing of how difficult marriage can be and how you have to stick it out through the hard times.

For a brief moment, I felt this... nostalgia for the good old days that my generation missed out on. You know, the days when people got married and they MEANT it. A time when people were DIFFERENT than they are today.

Then she said: "Marriage is worth it, but it's tough. There were times when I asked myself if i really wanted to stay with him."

I playfully asked: "So why did you stay?" (I expected to hear something about love, commitment, building a life together--the stuff people normally say.)

Her: "I didn't think i'd find another man who didn't drink, smoke, or gamble, and who would be as nice to me."

Me: (stunned at the blatant hypergamy, this sweet little moment is coming to a screeching halt) "Wait....so you would have left him if you found someone better?"

Her: "But, I didn't know anyone better. And I didn't think I'd find anyone." She said this so naturally! No shame, no embarrassment. This wasn't like a guilty confession, it was just part of the story.

I don't know why this shit surprises me anymore. This sweet little old lady telling me about her fucking heroic husband... and it turns out they ONLY stayed together because she didn't think she could do better.

We've all heard the horror stories and divorce dramas. And i guess I thought, surely there's a way to make it work.

But do i really want to spend 50 years trying to make sure my woman never thinks she could do better? How much effort is that? How much risk? Could it POSSIBLY be worth it? I just don't see a scenario where this makes sense.
