I'll give some of my experience:

If you get a raging hard on in the morning upon waking up (or if it wakes you up) then your T levels are great! This is what everyone between 14-~40 should be achieving. Your T levels are highest in the morning so if you are considering getting them checked (any general practitioner can do it) it will be fasted in the early AM.

Secondly your body might not be creating test (enough of it) for many reasons. Diet, stress, sleep, depression, nutrition. You have to live positively across the board to address all of these possibilities.

Simple Nutrition hack:

Brazil nuts (900% daily selenium requirements per serving - better than supplement sources for absorption) Magnesium (From molasses, cocoa, cacao, leafy greens, nuts or supplements) Zinc (oysters, meat pumpkin seeds)

These are some components your body needs to produce Test (as well as do other things). Be sure to eat extra of them.

There are tons of other hacks like doing heavy squats/deadlifts in a fasted state, looking at attractive women (can google) but as a principle every man should be trying to naturally attain more T; it is kind of a magic man hormone. Once you start supplementing it your body also doesn't produce it naturally as easily so be wary.

[–]EmperorAurelius 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Dude, I eat a shit ton of Brazil nuts and I supplement zinc and magnesium and I swear I'm a raging beast. Hard-ons like a bull. Too bad I have no outlet yet lol.

[–]doritoesNcoffee1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

45 mg of zinc daily does wonders.

[–]EmperorAurelius 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I take 30mg capsules. That should be enough, no?

[–]doritoesNcoffee1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

30mg is fine. Max dose is 50mg a day, as long as you don't cross it over you're good.

[–]RedditArgument 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Around 15 is probably recommended minimum you heard not max. 45 is a good rule of thumb for maximum from what I've read.

[–]foldpak111 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Supplementation is very important. If I had to narrow it down to a top five for t production, it'd go like this:

  1. L- Arginine

  2. Maca

  3. Horny goat weed

  4. Zinc

  5. Magnesium

[–]juanqunt 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

What do maca and horny goat weed do?

My top 5 are zinc, magnesium, selenium, taurine, and ashwagandha.

[–]foldpak111 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Basically plant powder that helps with libido. Very strong erections after a day of taking 1000mg of hgw and 3000 mg of maca. The hgw can get expensive, but the maca you can get pretty good deals.

[–]rpscrote 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

maca and hgw don't raise t much/at all but do have libido specific attributes. It's like how cialis will give you wod but your t isn't the cause

[–]pewpewing 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

So much bullshit misinformation in here it's embarrassing. See the /r/steroids wiki to get facts.

[–]juanqunt 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Pills are for pussies. Real men are pin cushions. :P

Ah the amazing weird coincidences of life. I am sitting on a toilet in a hotel room and was pinning my test cyp dose when my phone beeped and your message popped up. That's just great. TRT is the shit.

[–]hamsterbator 15 points16 points17 points 11 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

I dunno professor. This disease mongering sounds a lot like the pressure I receive every day to prescribe statins for primary prevention (probably NNT over 100+) of heart disease, SSRIs of questionable efficacy to train wrecks I know won't help (cannot fix their lives), bloated DM regimens to people with Big Mac disease who can't follow a simple diet. Anticoagulants to everyone despite questionable bleedings risks, compliance and life expectancy.

In some areas (dying) medicine is great but when it comes to fitness most MDs know jack shit compared to the average browscientist. Just like how diet advice in the medical communities is decades behind and only now reversing its stance on fat and cholesterol intake.

If your dick isn't getting up by itself in the morning and you're not wanting to fuck girls and you've ruled out obvious causes (drugs, obesity etc) then why not supplement? Why not exchange looking closer to Stallone in the last decades of your life at the risk of shortening your life a few years? Who really wants to live to 80+ if you need someone to wipe your ass for you?

When it comes to supplementation, I don't mean the crazy GH, insulin regimens the bodybuilder freaks use. But a steady twice weekly injection or so to get your levels up to normal range, not supranormal.

If you're a young guy with body dysmorphia and regular levels then absolutely do not take steroids. Maximize your genetic potential and you're good to go if you straighten out the rest of your life. But if you're 30 with levels of a 60 year old, take care of yourself etc but just don't have sex drive then why not?

Just some anecdotal evidence. Not saying what I've done is right for everyone.

I've been an avid gym goer since I was 18 years old. Never more than 3 months off, always going 3-5 days a week for 7+ years. I was 5'11" 185 lbs and looked like I went to the gym, wasn't fat, and was fairly strong. 425 DL / 315 squat / 315 bench. I looked like I went to the gym, but nothing special at all.

At 25, I cycled testosterone and several other steroids. By the end of my cycle, 90% of my conversations with strangers started with people asking about fitness or commenting on my physique,"Whats your routine like? How many days do you go to the gym? Whats your diet?" I had girls literally walking up to me in the gym and starting conversations for no other reason than to hit on me (girlfriend, so the flattery was nice...but no good stories came from this ;) ). I enjoyed everything about it, except the acne. I've since learned to manage this through experience, its no longer even an issue.

I came off, and was perfectly healthy. Then I ran testosterone for 18 months straight. Even after 6 months coming off, my sex drive was still in the gutter even after proper Post Cycle Therapy and having 100% normal/'healthy' bloodwork come back. Lost all my muscle, and all my strength.

6 weeks ago I started injecting testosterone again, and I'm back to fucking 3x+ a day, I feel great, and I've gone from DYEL to 'almost jacked' in a very short period of time. In a few more weeks, I'll be back where I was last cycle.

While I was on for 18 months, I got my girlfriend pregnant as well. Infertility is literally the least of your worries on steroids. Most doctors and med students are massively under-informed on hormones and hormone therapy (I consulted several med students before using, as well as pharmacists - all either currently working in the field or graduating).

That said, you are fucking with your bodies natural homeostasis which is never a good thing. Weigh your own risks/benefits. Do your research, long term side effects are laughably understudied and overstated.

EDIT: Roids don't suddenly make you become a 250 lb monster when you use them. It takes a lot of diet and effort to get results, your muscles just take a slightly different appearance, and your body uses calories more efficiently (for aesthetic purposes). A natural guy @ 190 10% is going to look like garbage next to a 190 lb 10% juicer.

6 months post blast and cruise still suffering major ED? What suggests you'll ever go back to a true normal?

Still, that's unsettling, minimum 6 months to normal libido again, if you ever recover.

[–]ilovemagicmush 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Just take some toremifene and your balls and libido come back in 2 days flat.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean I assume cialis the whole time for BP, but still..

[–]1003rp 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Did you ever consider you may have had somewhat low testosterone levels so that is why you had such a positive response?

[–]1003rp 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Most people with only slightly low or at the bottom boundary of low would have such minimal symptoms they probably think they are normal. I'm glad to hear that the supplementation is benefitting you, but next time you are off it maybe consider going to a doctor to get your levels checked?

Oh okay I misread that thanks for the clarification

[–]ilovemagicmush 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The T tests are a little bit misleading.

Test converts to DHT, which isn't accounted for. Total T isn't really much of an indicator of manliness.

The indicator of manliness is how much DHT you have compared to your estrogen.

If you have low-normal estrogen, you could have a test levels of 200, but you might have high levels of 5-AR that convert T to DHT, thus making you very manly.

That's why you see people with low T who are apparantly very manly, some home people with high T who don't have a high sex drive (low 5-AR, high estrogen)

[–]Zachar1a2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

My thoughts exactly. Maybe he was one of the guys that OP was referring to, who actually has "appropriate indication for supplementation".

[–]seattleron 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

How did you get rid of the acne?

I've also heard that just using CLomid is a good way to help boost the production without shutting down production. Ever heard of anyone using that alone?

[–]juanqunt 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Acne = controling estro and good diet. Going without milk and gluten cleared most of my acne, along with aromasin and zinc.

[–]foldpak111 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Zinc deficiency is a big contributor. Good on you for fixing it

[–]rpscrote 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

low dose accutane (20mg/day) works wonders as well

[–][deleted] 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[permanently deleted]

[–]rpscrote 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

your aromasin was probably bunk

[–]Christian_Kong 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Then I ran testosterone for 18 months straight.

How much test were you taking on average during that period? I'm no expert but I would think even going on the lower level of test(500mg) for that long pretty much means you are going to need the shit for the rest of your life if you want to feel normal. It's not often you hear of people running cycles this long without becoming lifers.

[–]frenchthowaway 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

When your using testosterone the body stops producing it because you're going off the charts.

Furthermore increase in "injected"/external testosterone leads to increase in estrogen, that's why many athletes that dope start growing breasts and even lactate and their testicles shrink.

When you get off steroids your body was no longer capable of maintaining regular levels.

Also testosterone has a huge placebo effects, people that were given sugar pills and told it was steroids increased their strengths pretty substantially and when they were told the truth that it was only sugar pills they didn't manage to lift the same weight they managed to lift a day before, or even a month before.

I am not saying that testosterone has no effects, it has lots of effects, it leads to better recovery and increases muscle mass and performance, but most of it is incidental, it's because of the mental effect.

[–]1nzgs 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Excellent post. Pretty much inline with my own experience and those of every user I know.

Out of curiosity did your PCT include HCG?

[–][deleted] 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[permanently deleted]

[–]bassivemalls 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Running hCG for a long period of time (months) is bad as it can desensitize your body's response to luteinizing hormone (makes testosterone in Leydig cells of testes). It should only be used at the beginning of PCT to kick-start natural test production by mimicking luteinizing hormone, then discontinued after about 3 weeks.

Your 590 T level I saw you posted above is fine though, but being able to blow bigger loads isn't worth maybe wrecking your natural ability to produce endogenous test, IMO. Take it easy with hCG and look into it.

[–]AndreNowzick1 points 11 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Will exogenous testosterone supplementation increase muscle strength, synthesis, and overall metabolism? Yes, of course.

But it will also inhibit the pituitary gland from releasing luteinizing hormone and cause the body to decrease its own production of testosterone for a while (for several months to a year or more). During that period, you may or probably will suffer from withdrawal (not like a drug, but a similar idea) where you lose most of your gains, feel even more lethargic than in general, and so forth. Hormones unlike neurotransmitters are much slower to respond, and can take days, to weeks, to even months to act on their targets.

Then there is a rebound upon no longer taking exogenous testerone and your body's own T production is below where it should be in the first place, not to mention the long term side-effects of ramping up the body's level of T i.e. higher chance of heart disease, higher blood pressure, higher chance of cancer, etc.

The most important reason why testerone is low for many is too much body fat. The more fat you have on your body, the more estrogen your body produces. Reduce your body fat percentage, and your T levels should go up. Be more active, go to the gym 3x a week do a program like starting strength if you haven't already where you do compound movements like squats, benchpress, deadlifts, etc. and do some HIIT sprints like Tabata Protocol for 15 - 20 minutes (20 seconds on 10 seconds off)

Eat a lot of fats, nuts (brazilian come to mind), avocados, etc. Try to follow a low carb (less than at least 100 - 120 grams probably for most?), moderate protein, high fat diet because testosterone is derived from fat and cholesterol (even egg yolks are great for that).

Well said. Btw, many of my friends have came off without PCT and felt just fine. A lot of it diet and supplementation. Taurine + zinc are all I used to be able to come off and still have 10 boners a day.

Cheating fraud.

I wish I could be as easy going as you about roids so I could get those easy gains... At the same time it feels wrong.

I see all those guys at the gym, start lifting 6 months later they have bowling ball delts while lifting the women's dumbbells.

Here I am capped delts doing 90kg ohp for reps..

Roids are exactly like cheat codes in a game.

If you wish then be. Stop bitching. Pickup the needle and pin. Its only you that your morals are leaving behind in the dust.

Fuck whats wrong in bettering yourself ? You use game to pickup chicks dont you ? It "feels" wrong because you have been told its wrong. Society doesn't want swole muscular men.

[–]a-orzie 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah but low test isn't an epidemic

[–]real-boethius 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Below about 490-450 ng/dl most men will be adverrsely affected by low Test. As men get older the percentages actually do get quite high.

Many medical conditions and medications lower Test.

Now many Drs will tell you if your Test is over 240 you are normal and normal = optimal. If you believe that, I have a bridge you may want to purchase for a real good price.

Also worth noting Test levels have fallen on a population basis lately - a top quartile level now would have been bottom quartile 100 years ago

[–]juanqunt 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You may know their current routine, but you don't know their history. I've done 150kg bench, 230kg squat, and all that, but no I always use pink dumbbells for isolations. 15lb DBs work the best for me for lateral raises and 20lb DBs work the best for me for curls. When it comes to compound exercises I go heavy, but when it comes to isolations, I go super light for the pump.

Lots of things wrong with this post.

  1. Testosterone does fluctuate, throughout the day. It generally trends as a decline from the 20s onwards, the evolutionary purpose of which is to nudge men towards fatherhood when different traits are required of a man. Our hormones also do not reflect our modern lifespans. We aren't fathers in our teens/early 20s, or grandfathers in our 40s. It's asinine to support modern medical intervention for lifespan while warning against exogenous testosterone.

  2. Exogenous testosterone used responsibly is not harmful. There is absolutely zero evidence of long term harm providing that it is INJECTABLE testosterone (not oral) and blood pressure is monitored. Andriol is a poor form of testosterone delivery with unknown long term health effects compared to injectables.

  3. Of course testosterone causes temporary infertility. Even a small dose will cause shutdown of sperm production. This almost always reverses itself upon cessation, and can be kickstarted with HCG. Even so, I know of many men who have conceived by accident while on high doses of test, and I've never heard of a single man who was totally infertile despite using HCG. Worst of all, the patients in your fertility study were already being treated for infertility!

  4. Testosterone is extremely cheap. Mine costs me about £3/week and I use a fairly high TRT dose of 250mg/week. Pharma companies are not making huge profits from it, they are making huge profits from growth hormone which is the big thing in life extension at the moment (with good reason). The big profits are made by anti-ageing doctors who charge an enormous markup for cheap hormones.

  5. You completely ignore the myriad positive effects of test supplementation.

Posts like yours are not helpful and you are pushing the same anti-testosterone agenda we have been hearing for decades.

[–]rpscrote 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Testosterone is extremely cheap.

It's a lot more expensive than that in the US though as many times insurance won't cover TRT unless you're out of the ridiculously generous test range, e.g. you have less test than the average 80 year old

[–]MrHoman 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

All I'm gonna say is steroids are fun and if I live past 60 I'm going to be really pissed off so I'm just going to keep blasting 1g of test and get my deadlift up to 700lb thanks.

[–]BPtoRP 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

While I do understand how much testosterone, that glorious chemical, affects my everyday life, especially my psychology...I do not understand the need to go overboard with it. I had low testosterone from the BP lifestyle I lead (shitty sleep, shitty food, no lifting, shitty stress, shitty porn/fapping, shitty female interactions) and fixed it by changing my lifestyle to what it is today and my body is just more alive, I give much less of a fuck, have way more confidence, way better frame, almost no AA, much sharper, more controlled, let alone the bodily differences.

So I do understand how magical it is. But what do you gain from lifting 700 pounds, becoming full Dark Triad psychologically, and looking unnaturally buff? Could you not reach the same benefits by perfecting your lifestyle consistently? If there were benefits you could never achieve naturally, are they really worth fucking up with your hormones this hard? Admitting ignorance here so enlighten me with your real-life perspective.

I am sceptical the dude is a real doctor. Hardly anyone takes Test 'pills'. Also Test is out of patent mostly so drug companies are not that interested generally.

Visit /r/teststerone for lots of cases of doctors who have no clue eg monthly shots of a Test ester with a half life 5 days.

Ther are many things that cause low Test including illnesses and medications. And treatment when done properly produces excellent results.

Correcting some other brocience here

  • There is no evidence linking TRT with prostate cancer. Reducing Test to 0 can temporarily slow PCa growth but that is a different issue.

  • Yes Test can cause infertility but that can be avoided and corrected with HCG and other hormones.

  • The doses used for TRT are around 60-140 mg / week, far lower than steroid abusers who use 700+ per week. Side effects are far less common and much more easily managed.

  • Some cases of low Test are due to unhealthy lifestyle or poor nutrition and can be fixed in that way. By a lot aren't and can't be fixed with vitamins etc. Your sample of 1 is not proof it works for everyone.

First, testosterone is not a pill, it gets destroyed by liver when taken orally.

Second, the reference ranges for testosterone in adult men are way too low and are stupidly unified across all ages. What's healthy at 70 is not healthy at 30 or 20.

Third, you're kind of right. Messing with your hormones without proper knowledge is dangerous. But if you have low T, you have to either figure out the cause and treat it, hop on TRT/HCG, or live a shitty life.

Unfortunately, the legal situation makes you need a doctor to hop on TRT. And lack of understanding among doctors makes it very difficult even to get them to admit the low T problem.

It's not a ploy by pharma companies. It's a spreading disease. You'll know it when you have no more desire to fuck. When you'll have no energy for daily tasks.

Testosterone is what makes you a man. The more, the better.

[–]Deep_Crimson[S] 28 points29 points30 points 11 years ago* (23 children) | Copy Link

Thank you for your reply. Do you have medical expertise? Because unfortunately, you are wrong. There are oral supplements for testosterone. For example Andriol(R) Testocaps 40 mg by MSD. The reference ranges are not unified across ages. To the contrary, they are age dependent. Here is a good summary: http://www.mayomedicallaboratories.com/test-catalog/Clinical+and+Interpretive/83686 Note how all references are older. Testosterone is not the panacea of manhood. It not the sole factor for libido and manliness. Read the articles I posted if you wish to understand the problem of disease mongering better.

[–]MrEiffel 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

So basically you agreed with him since for adults the ranges are completely unified?

Also the mere fact that a range of 240-940 seems acceptable is completely absurd. If I had the same test levels as my grandfather of 92 years, you're seriously telling me, as a medical professor, that this is perfectly normal???

False. All studies suggest that southeast asians have the highest average T levels, while blacks are extremely average. Average for certain filipino villages is like 1100 ng/dL, while blacks are around 600 ng/dL, just like everyone else.

When will people realize that other hormones and other genes are at play when it comes to muscularity? IGF, DHT, nandrolones, insulin, etc...

[–]juanqunt 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nandrolones can occur naturally in the body, but very very tiny amounts. Probably insignificant for natural gains overall. Bigger factors I forgot to mention are androgen receptor density/sensitivity and myostatin. http://www.chm.bris.ac.uk/motm/nandrolone/nandc.htm

Apparently it's 810 ng/dL rather than 1100ng/dL like I said before: http://ethnicmuse.wordpress.com/2013/04/19/east-asian-testosterone-i/

This is just a blog post, but he cites a bunch of studies.

Do you have medical expertise? Because unfortunately, you are wrong. There are oral supplements for testosterone. For example Andriol(R) Testocaps 40 mg by MSD. T

And this is the problem with "medical knowledge." A 40mg "dose" of andriol is only 25mg of test, and 15mg of the ester necessary to survive a pass through the liver. Also, there's some serious doubts as to the bioavailability of what's left. Of course, there's no official medical research done on this, it's all the anecdote of bodybuilders. "Medical knowledge" is incomplete as steroid research is politcally frowned upon, and thus woefully incomplete.

[–]hamsterbator 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Professor, do YOU have clinical experience prescribing testosterone? or are you fear mongering?

I have limited experience because it is so frowned upon in the medical community, I think unreasonably so.

But everyone who knows anything about testosterone knows you should never take it orally. Injections are the way to go, gels are acceptable but just don't work as well.

[–]bigmfkr 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

The lab you mention has exactly the problem I described. Lowered, unified reference ranges for TT and FT for everyone above 19. The only age-dependent range is for bioavailable T. So I'm calling bullshit on that.

As for disease mongering, yes, the article you mention does have some merit. What it doesn't mention is that overprescribing of testosterone is a much lesser (though growing) problem than doctors having not heard about low testosterone causes and symptoms.

[–]1Ronin11A -5 points-4 points-3 points 11 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Lowered, unified reference ranges for TT and FT for everyone above 19.

This. Not saying people need to jump on TRT (most just need to eat more animal fats, sleep more, and lift some heavy goddamn barbells), but the idea that my T-levels at six feet and 190 pounds should be the same as some 5'5" 150 pound dude makes no sense.

[–]NeopolitanAfterglow 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Um yeah it does make sense.

And why does TRP keep repeating this mantra that eating like a man, sleeping like a man, and working out like a man increases testosterone and therefore makes you even more of a man? It's just widely accepted and unquestioned around here. Yet there's no evidence that it's true. Some guy somewhere said something like that, and then someone on the internet cited it, and then the bodybuilding/PUA/TRP communities immediately adopted and accepted it as fact. That's how it looks to me.

[–]Granny_Whisperer 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Probably because many guys want it to be true so much that they don't need no evidence. Let's not forget men can hamster too.

So building more muscle, wanting more sex, having less fat, being less depressed (if already depressed) is somehow not beneficial to men? All of those effects are scientifically proven results from having lots of T. Exogenous T. To say that testosterone is not the panacea of manhood is so dumb and ignorant that it makes me doubt you have any medical training whatsoever. Testosterone is the sole difference between masculine and feminine personality traits from birth. It has profound effects on libido and virility, far more than any other hormone, and to believe otherwise is to be in total denial, or more likely to be fear-mongering.

[–]juanqunt 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Most doctors prescribe patches or injectables.

I agree that other hormones are at play though. Plenty of people have great libidos doing no-test cycles and have better gains from them too.

[–]NeopolitanAfterglow 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Oh jeez, this has to be the broiest broscience I've read yet on TRP. Testosterone is not some precious magical universally wonderful nectar of the gods. People used to think vitamins were "the more the better" and that turned out to be a bunch of crap.

Fact is, it's a hormone that the body produces in controlled quantities. If it were "the more the better", evolution would already have us producing fucktons.

[–]1nzgs 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Evolution did have us producing "fucktons" relative to modern levels, and those levels were elevated for well over half our total lifespans. You couldn't have made more of a self-defeating argument.

[–]hamsterbator 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

we evolved and optimized around an average lifespan of 35 years or so. It is not unreasonable for certain vital hormones such as testosterone to decline disproportionately with age. Evolution was driven to pass on your genes as efficiently as possible within a short lifespan, not to produce super beings that live forever.

And it did, until civilization fucked us up. To reproduce, a human had to not die in a war. Something which having low T, and being a coward, helps with.

Of course, my "the more, the better" was about healthy values below 1300 ng/dL or so. Anything above will mess you up rather quickly.

[–]LordPorker 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Can you tell us what things to look out for that depletes T?

[–]rpscrote 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

anything estrogenically active is going to reduce T. Bad news: shitloads of stuff is estrogenically active. Watch out for plastic containers, even those which don't contain BPA. Wash your foods thoroughly. Don't eat food prepackaged with constant contact to plastic. Canned soups have shitloads of plasticizers sprayed on the inside of the can that leach into your food. Tap water has estrogenic metabolites and compounds in it. Watch out for estrogenically active things that touch and remain on your skin, as you can absorb a great deal more through your skin than your digestive tract.

My first doctor (a primary care doc) said I 'should be fine' while my second dr (a urologist) prescribed me 100mg/wk on the spot. 6 months later I asked if I could bump it up to 200mg/wk and he said sure, just come in every 6 months so I can check your blood levels.

[–]juanqunt 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No relationship between testosterone and cancer, but estrogen is linked to all kinds of cancer. If you don't control your estro levels while on test, and test does get converted to estrogen, then you have elevated risks.

[–]epixs 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Pretty sure you can't take real testosterone in a pill except for a modified version of the testosterone ring that is called dianabol. Most of those supplements are scams. Even then, like the OP said, you're going to end up feeling like shit since your own testosterone production is shut down.

I don't have a problem with guys want to maximize their T markers, it makes perfect sense as in the human sexual market place, high testosterone with a low survival cost is humanity's peacock tail. Almost every "alpha" attribute comes back to T, either fetal androgen levels or free floating levels in adults. Provided you have low surface bacteria, don't have heightened limbic responses and have low markers for all the other typical T survival costs, T will be your biggest advantage over other men in the SMP.

My problem is with supplementation. You can get your T levels roaring without resorting to roids.

If you want to use the supplements, go for it, but that it is the default advice around for raising free T is fucking ridiculous.

[–]real-boethius 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

you can get your t levels roaring without ... roids

Oh really?

I tried everything including losing weight which is damn hard on low test. Zinc maca healthy fat lifting etc tc etc. My test went down a further 20%. Don't drink alcohol, plenty of sleep...

Many cases of low test are not due to lifestyle.

So stop over-generalizing.

[–]real-boethius 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I tried all if the above, for at least several months, usually permanently.

Squats, dead lifts, sprints, IF, exercise twice a day, plenty of fat and sufficient carbs...

As for fat and Test I suspect the causality works both ways. Low test causes fat accumulation and muscle loss. Fat causes Test to be aromatized to Estro.

I went from ~35% body fat to ~20 and my Test went down by 20% even after stabilizing weight for three months. My bf % is not excessive so I don't see how it can be the cause any longer if at all. Earlier on I had normal Test with high bf.

This was very annoying because my Dr said "now you have lost all this fat your Test will be up again". Nope.

I am all for people fixing lifestyle but don't assume it is a panacea.

[–]real-boethius 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In my case I suspect the Test is due to high cortisol caused by abuse and neglect in childhood which turns up cortisol levels for life.

I do everything possible to keep the levels down but the fact is my body is just extremely reactive to any form of stress.

And please don't tell me meditation will fix it. It didn't. I am glad it helped in your sample of one. Again just because it worked for you does not mean it is a universal solution.

[–]JaxSwagger 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So you would fall into the class of people I say go for it to.

Thanks for bringing your expertise here.

It looks like you're talking about those testosterone pill commercials that started a few years ago. The manipulativeness of those commercials was grossly obvious.

This is a community where some men take and talk about steroids. These guys might hear 'testosterone', and think you're talking about or even attacking them. This might be why you're going to see a lot of denial in this thread.

But if I've understood correctly, then you message is aimed at the majority of normal people who do not take steroids. In which case, you already know you are right, and we thank you for the reminder not to be bamboozled by pharmaceuticals.

[–]eet_a_choad 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

we thank you for the reminder not to be bamboozled by pharmaceuticals

Agreed. I second that. It's so obvious that the low-T commercials prey on men's insecurities. It really is nothing more than unethical marketing.

They say nothing about the possible side effect, which are substantial (infertility, prostate cancer, heart attacks, blood clots, etc.) and yet make it sound like a win-win.

"Tired of feeling tired? Sick of feeling soft and wimpy? Stop being a chubby pansy!!! Become a real man!!! Take some T and be a man again!!!!" LOL.

The funny thing is when drug companies did this with women (Estrogen replacement therapy) and a bunch of them started dropping dead from breast and reproductive system cancers, heart attacks, blood clots, etc. there was a huge outcry for regulation and a bunch of lawsuits followed.

Right now, they're repeating the same exact tactic but with men and testosterone instead of women and estrogen (since they can't do that anymore because of the lawsuits).
