The male gaze, and why I miss it

Men don’t look at me the way they used to. In general, they don’t look at me at all. This is what happens when a woman turns 40 (50, 60 etc.). It’s a fact of life.

In theory, this is supposed to be an exhilarating passage in the life of a woman. At last we’re liberated from the tyranny of the male gaze! We don’t have to care what men think of us any more. We’re free to be our true, authentic self. We can wear a red hat.

In reality, it sucks. I’d give a lot for men to look at me like that again.

Where were those reddit articles. There was one on former beautiful women who just entered their 40s.

Was a real eye opener into why younger women do what they do, because that wall crumbles the fairy tale they've been living.

Can't help but feel bad for them, literally overnight, they find out the world isn't just full of kind helpful people, that being mostly ignore sucks, and you get to see what it's like to live as a man...

In an askMen thread about the video, a woman was saying that this is the shit the average woman has to go through every day. I pointed out that the average American woman is over 40 and overweight.

I should go back and rewatch the video to see if there are any ladies in the background getting no attention from those dudes at all.

There are many problems, but the first one that stuck me, 'This girl is above average.' She's an aspiring actress? Even better. Now a bunch of mediocre and overweight bitches are acting like they get the same attention? Laaaaaawl.

THEN! You walk her through DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN... WITH THOSE HIPS... THAT RACK... THAT FLAT BELLY... THAT HAIR... are you fucking shitting me? Let's do this again with some average bitch and see what happens. She can cruise around in her sweat pants, ugg boots and poorly fitting (probably ugly) shirt and revel in being ignored... ah, who am I kidding? Contra to what the newbies on here say, women can offer plenty to the world. From the tradition feminine skills like taking care of home and hearth to some of the most brilliant women out there taking on the challenges of science, women can do all sorts of things. The thing is not every woman has actual skills they can offer to the world. However, the genetic lottery does give out looks. If she's lucked out with that, all she has to do to get ahead is stay hot and die. Well, until the beauty runs out.

That's why a smart man doesn't think with the little head when going for the long term. Yes, good looks are lovely. But they aren't going to help you build something in the long term. If a woman says she misses the catcalls, RUN. She's admitting that there's no other reason a man would talk to her other than her looks.

As an older woman, I always used the analogy to friends, "It's like being a rock star or an actor who nobody recognizes anymore."

But it is a relief.

When everyone either stares, hangs out of a car, talks to you in the grocery store, jogs up alongside you, like a rock star or an actor who can finally go out in public, it is a relief to finally be anonymous. When you are a young female, going out of the house feels like you're going onstage, you are always on display, always being glared at. And here's what happens. One day (male or female) you'll look at a photo of yourself and wonder, "Who is that!?" When you see yourself older, you judge other older people more compassionately. You can look at an older man and say. "Yeah. I bet he was really cute way back when. He's lost his looks, but I can see remnants of them in his face. I can tell he must have been handsome." From conversations I've had, older men do this also-they look at you and can see what you were at one time, and become more forgiving. Everyone who turns middle aged hopes other people can still see some of their good looks. It hits men harder, because they put more emphasis on being 'in the game.' I spoke to a very attractive male doctor, who told me he passed a group of young women and got nary a glance. It killed him, but we all have to deal with this one day. You never think it's going to happen to you, but then you see that picture of yourself..." My husband's 2 sisters both died at a young age (35 & 41). Be happy you are racking up the years. Many people don't get to do that. Every human being, since the beginning of time has to deal with their age, and find a comfortable place to put it. Me, I keep my bikini pictures all over the house.
