With men, when we say "ready to settle down" we mean "I finally have my life in order and can offer something of substance to a partner. I'm finally able to be a contributing partner, father, and provider."

With women, when they say "ready to settle down", they usually mean "I've had all the fun I'm going to have on the carousel, and now I'm ready to be taken care of." That isn't inherently bad - men are okay with taking care of women. It's the way things tend to work. It becomes bad when they are "ready to settle down" after being ejected from the carousel (and make no mistake, no carousel rider leaves voluntarily).
