As some others have said, you don’t need a reason to break up with someone. There doesn’t need to be some huge crux moment, which is what my ex thought. It sounds like you weren’t satisfied and had wanted out for a long time yet you settled. Thirdly people on the Narcissism Spectrum tend to respond to being confronted by pulling out the same toolkit in all cases. 1) Charm offensive and denial 2) Hostility, rage and invalidations. 3) Victimhood, pouting, crocodile tears. 4) Discard and pretend the responsible party doesn't exist.

This isn't a coincidence that they do this. It's the same way very young children respond to being confronted by their parents. It's instinctive behavior and the purpose is to manipulate a parent's parental instinct.

So I think the fact that you saw her as being pure, sweet and innocent, vulnerable, flustered, a bit scatterbrained, and this was all a silly misunderstanding you needed to be more compassionate about. That's not an accident. She appealed to your parental instinct to lay off, and not treat her harshly. People with these kind of personality disorders don't really have any other way of dealing with confrontation, so over time and practice than can be disturbingly good at it.
