TL;DR Strong eye contact conveys confidence, first impressions matter, and, therefore, use both simultaneously.
[–]skcin7 13 points14 points15 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Furthermore if you leave a good first impression it's pretty difficult for that impression to be changed. So make the first impression of you confidence and strength, always. ;)

Real tl;dr: Be psychologically healthy, confident, and single.

[–]whomeverIwishtobe 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
you didn't approach her afterwards.
[–]peepeeparadise 13 points14 points15 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Your TL;DR is not correct.
TL;DR [FIXED] When you and a girl make eye contact, confidently smile instead of looking away, and she will much more likely be attracted to you.
[–]VirtuosicElevator 43 points44 points45 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I started doing this a while back. It was a lightbulb thing. Just today i was in an elevator, going to the same floor as a beautiful blonde. I said same floor, halfway up I said "this is one slow ass elevator" which made her look back at me and then I gave the killer grin. She smiled back and gave THAT giggle(the one where the joke wasn't funny but you could tell she was attracted). She did it again as she walked off and looked back again....confidence to the max

Do you do this even when they catch you looking at them? I usually don't smile until I catch them looking at me, so I don't have to risk seeming creepy.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
As long as you aren't smiling when they first see you looking at them I think you're okay. That would be creepy. But I see no reason to hide the fact that you were checking them out.
[–]peepeeparadise 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Exactly! That's exactly right.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
good question. I was same as OP, don't want to seem too interested but also a bit embarrassed to be caught.
You can gain confidence by knowing that it will work... then it does. Its a self-fulfilling prophecy! Just smile innocently and charmingly, and she will be charmed.
[–]peepeeparadise 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Either way works! Girls are not creeped out by catching you looking at them, as long as you smile innocently and confidently. If you give them a sinister evil smile, then you'll come off creepy.
[–]HeroicPrinny 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Honestly, I think the loophole to this problem is to generally be walking around "smiling with your eyes" like something great just happened to you or you are having one of your usual amazing days. When they see you, your positive and confident state will already be conveyed, and you can add in a slight smile to show it's just for them.
[–]cooledcannon 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If you give them a sinister evil smile
this probably works best if you are incredibly good looking, for the contrast
[–]zZPPBTOZz 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]kungfutitties 73 points74 points75 points 13 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Damn nigga I always do that look away thing because I got it in my head when I was young that seeming disinterested was attractive, when it's not, it's just disqualifying MYSELF.
shit
[–]peepeeparadise 10 points11 points12 points 13 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
I know. It's such a farce. (Not just an excuse to use the word "farce"). Acting uninterested will almost never work in the real world. EDIT: "Uninterested..."
[–]captain_zen 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]electricumbrella 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Walk up and say hi. Or maybe continue whatever you are doing and then say hi later. The seed is already planted, at this point it should be easy to start a conversation based on whatever is happening at the moment. :)
[–]WASDx 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
This happened too me a week ago. I had strong eye contact several times with a girl and later when she wasn't locked in I approached and it went better than ever.
[–]skcin7 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah exactly. A lot of guys will say to start a conversation immediately, which is fine, but not the only option. As long as you didn't hesitate or look away in the first 2 seconds, you should be able to talk to her at your own convenience.
[–]peepeeparadise 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I agree. You're welcome to say "hi" if she sees you and then you smile.
Depends on the context. If she's not walking away, you can say "hey."
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
lol this kind of reminds me of a funny story, the last day of school, I was kind of zoning out as I was smiling, and of course, I was zoning out while starting at a hot girl in my class, and then I noticed she was smiling at me.

[–]skcin7 18 points19 points20 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yup. I once snuck into a pool after it closed and went skinny dipping and stole some towels and a cooler from the lost & found. When I got back into my car a cop pulled up so I waved at him as I left. He waved back. Natural human response. That's state transfer. Imagine what could have happened if I were to run.
[–]WastelandStyle 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Reminds me of the time a cop pulled up while me and my friends smoked weed in a car at a park. They hauled ass out of there, but I just waved at the guy as we left. He didn't follow us.
[–]secr- 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]peepeeparadise 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Bro's from another mo', brothers from another mother. This is going to sound weird, but practice your grin in the bathroom. Creepy grins will flush this simple tactic down the toilet.
[–]MarsayMarsac 8 points9 points10 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I dared to look into the the eyes of teenage girl(too young for me), afterwards she and her friends followed me around in shopping center and tried to engage conversation in various ways. Maybe I shouldn't send her air kiss, because afterwards she ran behind me, touched my hair and ran away. Later I sat and drank my coffee, she came and seated herself in front of me at my table and started to ask all kind of stupid questions. I had to leave, because this was annoying me already. And all this because I looked into her eyes for a too long period. Be careful. :)
[–]FRSTKZ 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I was working at a high school in the cafeteria. I was like 23 and this one time this girl was walking up to my pizza cart from a distance. Our eyes locked, I smiled but it was different. I got butterflies in my stomach, it felt like she was coming at me like she was gonna kiss me, even though she was like 10 feet away. This lasted for like 10 seconds and I remembered where I was and I had to look away cause she was like 17. She walked away with her pizza slice and a big smile because she knew we had a moment. Only if I was younger.
Another time in high school I was just walking down the hallway minding my own business when I saw a girl that was one year below me. Her sister was in my grade so we knew each other. I was a little troublemaker back then. Everyone knew she had a boyfriend, some hardcore gangster dude that got kicked out of school. Anyways I looked at her innocently and our eyes locked 2 seconds later we were kissing. It was hella awkward and we just walked away and left it like that.
So getting that initial stare and smile might put you in the right situation to do something crazy and spontaneous. Smile at everyone!
I think its more likely for a younger girl to see you as confident. Probably because you actually are confident (since you know she's younger).
[–]Ra1den 20 points21 points22 points 13 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
I like it. I'll give it a shot. I tend to stare without smiling. That is pretty stupid, come to think of it.
[–]Mcneece 7 points8 points9 points 13 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
same here, i just dont dare break out a smile.
[–]peepeeparadise 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Staring without a smile looks either like you're confused, creepy, or bored.
[–]Mcneece 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
yea, but i still haven't dared to smile yet.
[–]Confident_Me 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Uh why?
[–]Mcneece 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I am afraid they would get creeped out.
I'm not staring for long, i look at them, they look back at me, and i look away, in the span of maybe 1,5 - 2 seconds
[–]Confident_Me 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Well that kinda thinking won't get you very far. Girls like guys who smile and look like they are enjoying themselves. NOT smiling and looking at them is creepier than to flash a quick smile with eye contact and for all you know it could make there day so why not? Plus you'll never know if you don't try!
[–]Mcneece 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
yep, i've got experience looking at em, i know what the outcome is.
smiling at unknown chicks however, I've got no experience in, and i guess that frightens me.
I just need to crack the first one i guess, then it'll get easier from there.
[–]secr- 7 points8 points9 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Probably that you're scared or not interested, as you said. Either way it's pretty obvious you don't want further contact if you look away.
[–]peepeeparadise 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I agree. It's not cute or anything. When you break eye contact, its almost like they instantly forget about you.
[–]Minecraftmaster92 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well try thinking about it in this point of view, when a girl breaks eye contact with you first don't you assume she isn't interested? Why would her point of view be any different?
[–]yamehameha 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I look like the terminator if i force a smile....
[–]knoekie[🍰] 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
As a girl I just have to add that a smile doesn't have to mean that a girl is flirting with you. Whenever I go clubbing I'm always in a good mood (because otherwise I would've stayed at homer), and I'm always smiling and dancing and smiling. And a lot of time it happened that I guy came to me saying "we flirted a bit, do you want a drink", or "I saw you smiling, can I have your number", and that I had totally no clue that I even smiled at him.
That being said, I think it's amazing how you're doing this. If I would catch you looking at me and smiling (and I'm even slightly interested) I would definitely smile back :) This also makes you more easy to approach. I wonder if there are any girls coming to you?? Could you give us an update?
[–]HeroicPrinny 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I also think it's important to recognize the difference between this sort of thing in a club versus in the office or on the street, when people aren't usually aren't in the same elevation of mood that you described.
[–]knoekie[🍰] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You're right offcourse.. However, I can still be happy in the street and smile without knowing someone could see this as flirting. But maybe I'm just weird.. I had friends laughing at me because lots of people have misinterpreted my smiles as flirting (even a girl once). ;)
[–]refrigeratorbob 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
There's smiling as you go about your day, and there is smiling because you and a guy are having an eye-lock moment. One smile is there before already, the other comes after, as an effect.
[–]knoekie[🍰] -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Theres a lot of difference smiles.. But the flirtious one is the best :) wink
[–]peepeeparadise 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Thanks for the input! Glad to know girls are interested in this topic too.
I mean, actually yes, girls have been coming to me a little more lately. Lately I've been feeling more confident in general (not just trying to appear confident during an interaction with a girl). I find that i walk more upright, with my head up (rather than looking down to the ground), and I've been dressing a little nicer (not outside of my normal style, but just more confidently dressed).
So maybe a girl can sense my confidence even before I smile at her. This helps when I actually do smile, because maybe its what she kinda wanted me to do...
[–]knoekie[🍰] 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think you're right.. I have a friend who has been dieting. But the funny thing is that she actually looks better not because she's thinner, but because she's more confident. She used to think her clothes didn't fit or make her look fat, and now she just enjoys wearing skirts and dressed and this makes her look more happy and more attractive :)
So, keep on smiling and enjoy the girls that are coming to you!!
[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
This basic human 101 contact. Nothing new
Obviously when a girl smiles at you back. Thats a good sign
When she frowning and spraying pepper spray in your face. She not attracted to you
[–]secr- 8 points9 points10 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Oh I thought they just assumed I liked pepper!
[–]Pipre 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well, there was that infamous Cosmo tip about sprinkling pepper under a guy's nose before orgasm... Same thing right?
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
But according to this subreddit you should still put her hand on your penis.
Cool addition to the conversation. You're right, nothing new. But NO ONE does it. That's why its "simple but effective."
[–]Shmoppy 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Why not start it off? Catch a girl's eye, then when she looks at you, smile, hold it for a second then break eye contact and move on. She will remember you.
[–]secr- 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
But remember you as what?
[–]Shmoppy 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Guess it depends on the smile.
You're right shmoppy. If you want a girl to notice you, and she hasn't yet. Just looking at her will often get her to look at you... and when she does, THEN you smile.

[–]peepeeparadise 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm 25, so not in college anymore. I wish I knew this back then. I was confident sometimes (not as much as I am now I guess), but back then I thought that seeming slightly uninterested was a good way to get her to be interested in me. Now, I definitely know usually that's not true.
[–]Eskimosam 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I have this experience all the time. The only difference is I do this with EVERYONE. I was known as the "nicer, more enjoyable, etc" of my two other recently hired colleagues because I greeted everyone with a smile. I don't have to know you but if we locked eyes you get a smile. It works wonders for people's opinion of me.
[–]debrogliewave 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Thank you for the reminder. I know exactly what you're talking about.
[–]skcin7 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I do this trick too, all the time! :) I suck at fake smiling, so instead I usually wave and give the head lift as if I was saying "what's up". This simple act usually forces me to smile involuntarily, it gives off the emotion of happiness and good-will, which is an easy way to lead into a conversation, and usually leaves a great first impression of you.
Good call. Fake smiles are usually apparent. Although, it helps if you ACTUALLY like the girl. Then the smile is usually more genuine.
[–]electricumbrella 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Confidence is one of those things that lends to itself. So the more you practice it, the more will come to you, the more you have, the more you get.
[–]thumperj 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Ok, maybe obvious to some, but let's say you are looking at her and she looks at you. You pause, hold the gaze and then smile. When do you look away?
To those it seems obvious, can you explain the next steps and timing a bit more?
[–]peepeeparadise 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
In my experience, you can look away once you've had the moment of smiling at her with her eyes in contact with yours. But when you do, don't jerk your head, and don't stop smiling until a few moments after. A great technique is after smiling at her, looking really happy that she looked at you. She'll think this is cute. Then you can go for another glance. 9 times out of 10, on this glance, she'll be the one looking at you first.
