there you go, now you know how easy it actually is when both parties are into each other...
[–]Overmind_98 176 points177 points178 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
This. But again, that's ultra rare. People tend to have tons of issues and overcalculate stuff instead of casually and slowly taking things ahead. I'm glad that it worked for OP.

How do native English speakers pronounce SO? Do you say Significant Other, or simply Ess Ohh?
[–]otter_ridiculous 54 points55 points56 points 5 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link
Verbally, in a conversation, we don’t. I think it’s only internet speak.
[–]white_disc_4_holes 16 points17 points18 points 5 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link
You don't say which one?
[–]otter_ridiculous 22 points23 points24 points 5 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Not sure I follow your question, but I’ve known people to say boyfriend or girlfriend, not SO or significant other. I can only speak for western culture though. I’m happy to hear from others.
[–]nongo 24 points25 points26 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
A manager 3 levels above me said significant other so in my head I was thinking "why didn't he say girlfriend or wife. Maybe he's gay?" But nope, he has a girlfriend. Maybe he was just trying to be more professional. It was technically his first civilian job after serving in the Navy.
[–]otter_ridiculous 22 points23 points24 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Yup, using Significant Other in conversation is more professional and takes away the worry of being incorrect in that person sexual orientation.
[–]nongo 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
But the fact he said significant other made me question his sexual orientation because it was not specific. Usually people divulge whether they have a gf/bf or wife/husband regardless if they are female or male.
[–]SigmundFreud 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's like how Austin Rogers on Jeopardy referred to his "partner" once or twice and everyone assumed he was gay (myself included), then he returned for the tournament of champions and made a point of clarifying that he was straight and married to a female wife.
[–]RexTheOnion 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
sometimes if people have been together for a really long time, but not gotten married, they'll say it to let people know they're more serious but not married, I've seen that a couple times.
[–]schoolyjul 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It takes time to normalize a different vocabulary. Maybe that's all he is trying to do. The fact that you immediately assume it's coded language for a gay partner shows how unusual identifiers for relationship partners that are gender neutral still are.
[–]themanbat 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
In an office environment you often address men and women simultaneously. The phrase significant other is supposed to be completely benign as it doesnt assume gay or straight or married or dating or living togeyher or whatever.
[–]black_decay 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Maybe he had doubts about your orientation :P
[–]white_disc_4_holes 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Alright I see what you mean. Thank you.
[–]Inferno456 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
He said do you say it this way or that way and you said “we don’t” lol
[–]themanbat 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
We do say significant other sometimes. Never heard Ess Oh. You use it when you don't know if someone is gay or not to be polite and not have the confusion of getting it wrong. Also at an office party, often the employees will be instructed to feel free to bring their significant others. This is faster than saying wives or husbands or boyfriend's or girlfriends or besties or family or whoever the fuck you wanna bring.
[–]moonstar133 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Ess Ooh. We just say significant other
[–]Tobeddetermined 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You're right, though internet speech has also entered the spoken English.
[–]Gnostromo 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
We say "you gettin it on the reg?"
[–]DisturbEDx02 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Out loud, you would never say ess ohh. SO translates to significant other but that’s also kind of rare to hear
Most native English speakers would ask if you have a boyfriend/girlfriend depending on your gender.
[–]white_disc_4_holes 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah I guessed most people would ask whether they have a boyfriend or a girlfriend. Thank you.
[–]Therealpenguin1234 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
English isn’t my first language but I was told to say significant other when talking about the person you are in a relationship with
[–]Tobeddetermined 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Ess Ohh in speech. And also significant other . But people will understand you I believe if you say Ess Ohh . And if they don't, you can always follow it up with Significnt other. But contextually I'm sure most people will understand you.
[–]devjohnson13 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is definitely a move you can do in your social circle. Show some light interest, then just completely ignore her for a while. I believe it's called push/pull. I doubt it works with cold approach much, simply because you don't often get to see them a second time, but I'm glad it worked out for you here! While I am a fan of direct approaches, sometimes leaving your level of interest ambigous can really attract a girl to you
[–]youzabish 29 points30 points31 points 5 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
I believe push pull is when you say something like “Omg you’re SUCH a dork, you’re lucky you’re cute.” You push with a slight playful jab, but you pull with a sweet or flirtatious remark.
What OP did was just direct game with no outcome dependance.
[–]JakeButler1111 18 points19 points20 points 5 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Both cases have an element of showing attraction and showing disinterest, so I think both of them qualify as push/pull
[+]youzabish -13 points-12 points-11 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Ok sure. Reality is what we make it right?
[–]ImJustSo 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
We use words to describe things in the world. Not all of us prefer words used certain ways, etc and can contain various definitions in our personal lexicon. Push/pull to me doesn't necessarily require a verbal exchange, but it often will be something like you mentioned. There are times where nonverbal actions have the same cause and effect as push/pull, so why call it anything else?
That's my opinion and I've been studying seduction for ten years. I also have a degree in applied linguistics, so I've also given my opinion on the topic of the term itself.
[–]Tobeddetermined 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Much truth my good man much truth 🙏. Push pull is the overall strategy. But a neg is a tactic. And a very powerful one. One that is very tricky to understand at first so it's imperative that we define very carefully and then drill until it becomes second nature. We use similar language in order to establish a common body of literature so that we all know what we're talking about. One of my masters once taught that language is for communication, so as long as we understand eachother then there's no fundamental need to get overly technical in exchange.
However when it comes to any body if knowledge, any field, those adding to the literature, say by publishing studies and writing textbooks and manuals use common language that is established within the field. It's important to distinguish words from one another because that is how we define words. Once we cease distinguishing words and lack definition than everything becomes meaningless and order dissolves into disorder.
I'd also add that these words are really cool! They make me very very happy too! And I take great pride in them! And I take pride in the great masters that taught me and established the field. Such as Mystery chief among them all and Style and out of Mystery came RSD Tyler and out of Tyler came Max and Julien and so many others.
Intergender social dynamics is pure wisdom distilled from the hard work sweat blood tears and years put into it by trial and error and has emerged as one of the great wonders of the world in establishing the new social science, or the applied social science.
When we come together we can accomplish so very much. I daresay then that it is of inordinate significance that we use the established common vernacular so as to teach and learn from each other.
But its okay to communicate with eacother so we understand eachother. And I think it's a good approach to then follow up with good pointers, so then we achieve understanding what was meant to be conveyed and give a learning opportunity so that the individual then comes out knowing a new and powerful terminology (that then leads him along his way to the literature/think search terms on google).
[–]ImJustSo 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I understand what point you're trying to make regarding defining words, but that's not how language works. I've already explained to you my understanding of the word and it's personal, just like your understanding of the word is personal. Your lexicon is your personal vocabulary and understanding of this particular language we're using.
I've explained to you how my usage of the word can be applied. You've also explained yours. That's communication and we've all established our lexicon, as well as shared it with others here.
So, whatever your master told you, they very obviously had a better understanding of their own point than you have taken away from it. As far as what language is and what he said, you can define it other ways. You could say language isn't simply communication, it's simply a tool. That tool is communication and therefore whatever tool accomplishes the same goal can be considered similar communication. You can write, but it doesn't become communication until it's read, but it's still language (I.e. It's always a tool).
There's further discussion regarding what language is and its usage as a tool, some scholars suggest that nothing ever said is not without purpose. There must always be a speaker/expresser and the utterance will always be to/will affect the world. Even if that affect is personal, because you satisfied a desire to express, therefore fulfilling a goal. I've always taken that to further understand language as a tool and not just communication. So what I'm saying is, you've misunderstood your master or he has misunderstood language.

Legend . That's awesome man. 👌 great that you put yourself out there and exercised your masculine energy. Happy for you that it turned out so nicely :) . There's something to the idea of conveying that you don't really want anything from someone when going up to them. Usually people can be guarded up the wazoo since they're first thought is like what the heck does this person want from me. But you just appreciated her feminine energy and acknowledged what she was putting out into the world, and you made her day. That blush says it all _. Something as simple as a smile and a kind word can can sometimes go a long way. Hope you guys have fun and enjoy the interaction and what comes of it .

The fact you gave her a compliment and didn’t ask for her number or to see her again separated you from all the other guys who approached her before so she got intrigued and needed to find out more about you. You basically showed immense abundance by not asking for her number but having the courage to talk to her. But be careful, she’s probably gonna test you through texting to see if that abundance is real and if you make the slightest mistake and look too available she’ll loose all interest instantly.

Female is fine as an adjective (female police officer) but female persons often hate when you use it as a noun (I saw a female) so just watch for that. Nice work tho
[–]nongo 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Nobody would refer to their female friend as a girlfriend or girlfriend as a female friend. If they do, they have some explaining to do.
[–]brennyflocko 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Right. That is using female as an adjective. But if they said a female was coming over it would be weird. If they said a female friend it would not be weird
