So this may seem a bit off the wall at first but i promise it will make sense. Last time I got tested for STDs the doc said I "had been exposed to herpes type 2" but I "wasn't showing signs" and that I should "use a condom" but I "didn't have to tell people I had herpes". Pretty sure she was trying to soften the blow. From what I understand, if the virus is present in your system, you have it.

Some facts about herpes: 1 in 4 women have it. 90% of people who have it do not know they have it. It's almost completely benign, it doesn't really affect your life negatively in any way unless you're having an outbreak, and outbreaks can be rare. And even when you're having an outbreak, all it means is you basically get a pimple on your genitals. Adam Ruins Everything has a great segment on how herpes is not a big deal, you should watch it (search for it on YouTube, I'm on mobile and don't feel like digging up the link right now)

The thing is, despite all this I still think I would feel weird sleeping with someone and not telling them about it. For one thing, if I sleep with someone casually and it ends up turning into an actual thing, if I didn't tell them in the beginning then at some point down the road I have to be like "yeah I didn't tell you this, um watch this YouTube video though and oh that's why I always insisted on using a condom.". OTOH if it is just a brief casual thing or one night stand as long as I use a condom the chance of transmission is super small so maybe not even worth bringing up.

Any of you guys have herpes? What do you do about it? Kind of wish they doctor hadn't told me, tbh. Ignorance is bliss...
