There’s a lot of talk nowadays about maximizing your looks - especially among younger guys - where the idea is this will increase your value in the dating market and improve your dating life. On the surface, this makes sense. The better you look, the more options you might have. But the problem I have is with the idea of "maximizing" itself.
The assumption here is that the better you look, the more dating success you’ll have and that it’s a linear curve. But in reality, improving your looks follows a curve similar to money and happiness (logarithmic curve). There was a study that found that if you’re completely broke or homeless your happiness is extremely low. Then, as you start earning, say $20,000 or $30,000 a year, your happiness increases because you can afford basic necessities. This trend continues until around $80,000 a year, where additional income doesn’t significantly increase happiness. Whether you make $80,000 or $300,000, the difference in happiness is marginal. The curve starts to flatten.
From my experience, the relationship between looks and dating work the same way. If you're in terrible shape, overweight, and overall unattractive, improving your looks will make a massive difference in your dating results. But if you're already a decent-looking guy in decent shape, trying to maximize your looks to become some Greek god isn’t going to yield much of a return. It’ll take a huge amount of time and effort, but the actual impact on your dating success will be minimal.
This is why I have an issue with the concept of maximizing out your looks. So what I personally focus on is maximizing my confidence - because confidence has a direct and consistent impact on my dating success. And unlike looks, the effect of confidence doesn’t plateau at the same rate as the effect of looks.
Over the past 10 years, I’ve improved my confidence every single year, and every year my results have gotten better while my looks have stayed largely the same. The more confident I’ve become, the better my interactions and dating outcomes have been. Confidence is a core part of attraction and dating success, and this is the area where you should be maximizing.
Now, some people will say, "Why not just do both?" And sure, in an ideal world with unlimited resources, you could. But in reality, we all have limited time, energy, and attention. You can’t maximize everything, so you have to be strategic about where you invest your effort.
And the actions required to build confidence are completely different from those needed to improve looks. You don’t gain confidence by spending hours in the gym. Confidence comes from facing fears, pushing yourself, and actual interactions with women. It comes from real-world experience, not from looking in the mirror.
So, rather than maximizing your looks - start maximizing your confidence.
P.S. I just want to reiterate that I fully support exercise and training - I do that every day. But the point is that I'm not trying to look like a fitness model as that would require a lot more time and resources that I currently invest in this area and wouldn't really help other areas of my life that much
