By now, we've all heard of tactical/strategic/weaponized incompetence in straight relationships, wherein the man will (subconsciously or consciously) do a chore so poorly that his partner will simply step in and do it all herself. This differs from simply not knowing how to do something or doing it differently from his partner's preferred way, and the man will not learn, improve, be more proactive, etc, and eventually acts so helpless and useless that his partner takes on more and more homemaking and other chores, especially related to child-care.
Again, this definitely happens and is definitely a problem in many straight relationships.
What I want to discuss is a related phenomenon which I've noticed, and which I think often masquerades as, or is advertised as, tactical incompetence. I think it can be called imposed incompetence, or maybe assumed incompetence, or taught incompetence.
Notable is that in our current Western/American society, men in a family role, especially fathers, are treated as a laughingstock, basically a whole class of Bart Simpsons who can barely function, and even then, only with the constant oversight and mothering by their wives/girlfriends. Anything men/fathers do is stupid and wrong due to how clueless and incompetent they are. And certainly, media portrayal impacts the way actual people actually treat each other. So that is the background and cultural context we are dealing with.
The imposed incompetence I want to discuss is not tactical incompetence, or any other sort of incompetence for that matter. It's not incompetence at all. It is simply doing a chore in a way that differs from your partner's desires, but not in a way that's wrong or worse--just different.
An easy example I can think of is loading a dishwasher. Certainly there are wrong ways to do it (overloading it, or loading it in a crazy inefficient manner, or loading it such that water can't possibly get to certain dishes), but there are many ways to do it that are not wrong and are ever so marginally different from each other in terms of overall effectivity, it's not worth the time to think about, let alone argue or treat your partner like a fool above. There isn't just the right way and the wrong way, there's his way, and her way, and dozens of other ways.
Come to think of it, many organization-related tasks can result in this phenomena emerging. Aligning shoes one way versus the other, for example, might not result in any significant difference at all, but it's easy to imagine an imposing partner getting annoyed or even angry over their preferences not being met. I should not that this phenomenon is not always something women do to men, men definitely do it to women as well in some cases, especially when it comes to more "masucline" tasks such as those related to cars. But within the home, and related to more "feminine" tasks such as cooking, cleaning, or childcare, I have definitely seen women get annoyed, irritated, and indeed angry at their male partners for doing something differently... but not incorrectly. And as a result, rather quickly, the men will often simply stop trying, or in some cases, defer to their partner's precise and exacting instructions, sometimes with gnashing teeth.
What is interesting is that the phenomenon is then described as tactical incompetence, when it's women describing it, anyway. "My husband didn't put the dishes away correctly" is a lot more of a problem than "My husband didn't put the dishes away my way." Again, this isn't ALWAYS women doing it to men, and it may not be a dynamic in all straight relationships, but it's something I've seen more than once and I do not think it is uncommon.
Have you seen this and am I correct in describing it as something that is very different from incompetence or tactical incompetence? Or am I simply trying to create an excuse for poorly-done chores? Again, I believe I've seen this on many occasions, in my own life and in others, especially relating to tasks that are thought of as more feminine, such as cooking, cleaning, and childcare. What do you think?
