my boyfriend (42M) and i (27F) have been together for 3 years. everything has been pretty good lately, i’ve been getting less triggered and we’ve just had a lot more peace in general when we spend time together. in the past, there have been times where he’s gotten angry and told me to shut the fuck up. he will angrily tell me something about the situation that pisses him off, i dont interrupt him and make sure to have a respectful tone when i’m responding to him. but he will interrupt me anyway and tell me to STFU really aggressively. this always triggers me and makes me just want to shut down. it hasnt happened in a while since things have been more harmonious lately. however, the other night, he got mad while we were having sex because i got distracted by something in the bed i was trying to move out of the way which made me chuckle. and then he continued going off on me because he says he’s always pleasing me and i don’t please him, and that i’ve neglected my responsibility in the relationship (not denying this but just giving context). (i will say however that the way he’s been “leading” the relationship (aka not leading in key areas) has messed with our chemistry which makes it less natural for me to submit sexually, so instead it feels forced rather than me having genuine desire. that’s not really what this post is about though)..

so after he expressed himself, i tried responding and he yelled for me to STFU again. i started to shut down but i truly am confused by this. i’ve actually been in situations where i’m literally apologising and he interrupts me telling me to stfu. so it just becomes a one-way conversation and the only thing i can do is sit there mute. i dont understand, but maybe you all can help..

first of all, why bring something up and then shut the other person down when they try to address your concerns? secondly, is this abuse or is this just a man putting a woman in her place? i’m totally open to admitting fault, taking responsibility for things, etc, but how can i do that if im told to stfu in a situation where i’m trying to address his concerns respectfully? also, how do your boyfriends/husbands address you when theyre angry? my bf is usually very loving and respectful but when he gets mad he tends to go the aggressive STFU/steamroll over everything i say route. thoughts?
