I get it. This has to do with the traditional marriage and how vulnerable women in such relationships are.

The woman staying home needs to be protected from the pressure of her breadwinning husband on how to spend his money, as that would be coercive. Especially when we know that the breadwinner is free to do whatever they want and that they only have to contend with the threat of bankruptcy if they stop earning money due to their partners decision to stay home.

Clearly it is much more coercive to place expectations on how your money is spent, than to stop working thus forcing your partner to work at the threat of loosing everything, while he must pay her free of expectations... /s

The only two couples in my family who are angered about the unequal share of earnings they each bring in, are the ones (men) working to provide for the partners who refuse to work themselves. And think about this, you can only force someone to work; you generally can't force someone not to work in todays age.

Yeah, I wasn't born yesterday, that's the typical law that is made to be abused. In this feminist western world courts are biased. Those laws exploit the bias.

There is an interesting concept called "Lawfare", which I think applies here.

Based on the content of the article, it looks like this is designed to protect women who are being controlled in the UK as if they are living in Afghanistan. If the law is gender neutral, and it's being used to stop "honor killings" and "genital mutilations", I'm okay with that.

aka, don't have a cow. This is actually a decent shot at writing a law that has a useful purpose. Physical violence is not the only way to control someone. Preventing someone from seeing anybody outside and from having any financial means is a pretty good way of doing just that.

We really have to wait until the actual language of the law comes out, this is for sure sensationalized for media.

in saying that... I'm sure the law doesn't state it in such terms, it's written for men who use money for control over their spouse. They keep them from funds so that they cannot leave the house or see their friends and family. Keep them locked away at home.

It's not to be used on the man who freezes his wife's access to the accounts because she has a shopping addiction or spends thousands daily. (Though I'm sure it will be tried by some gold digger)

It's definitely not for the everyday man. It's not about arguments over money issues and tightening up the budget. Not for when you don't buy her the dress she really wanted or the new car. If you are not holding her hostage by cutting off all access to funds, you have nothing to worry about.

It is not about 'criticism' its about the abuse of power and control through the use of money, because as we see globally, money is (unfortunately) the greatest way to acquire power and control.

Though the everyday man should have nothing to worry about with this law it is true that we live in a crazy world and that everyday people get charged with outlandish shit all the time. On top of that I believe in full personal liberty so don't agree with most laws, especially ones that can be used maliciously (the majority), and that you cannot really prove. So, though I understand the noble aim of the law, I can see how it could easily be used to extort as well.

Having grown up with a narcissistic father, I am very happy with any law that criminalizes psychological abuse, particularly in an age in which one can cheaply and elegantly record another person's activities. Hopefully, this law will be extended beyond domestic settings.

Ignoring for a moment the way the article is worded, which is blatantly misandrist, I actually think that these proposals are a good idea, assuming they are applied equally to everyone. Anyone who hasn't experienced first hand the type of abuse that people can dish out in this manner can't understand how abusive it can be.
