There are some legit reasons. Money is definitely a big one for me and my husband. But not having a partner? That's just tough. A lot of these 30-somethings who're desperate for kids could have settled down a lot earlier with a good bloke and said "no, I want Mr Perfect".

It should be noted that this should be read as: Not being able to find a man willing to commit to fatherhood with these women.

Assuming that the survey is done properly, it should be broad enough to cover a wide variety of women.

However if it isin't done properly, for example, if their survey population tends to be older nearer to say 30 years of age, then there's a selection problem. If the survey respondents are closer to 30 years of age, there's a higher chance that these women have self selected (priced) themselves out of the market, i.e. perhaps these women have ridiculously high standards and as such, the population of eligible male partners for these women is tiny.

Another factor could be men generally don't see women of today as someone they'd want to mother their child.

There needs to be a follow up survey to see how many males are willing to commit to fatherhood, and how many would love to have a child but cannot find a woman that will commit to a relationship and motherhood with them.

No indication on how they worded the questions, which is always a huge factor in the results obtained.

No mention of hypergamy: "sure, I'd like to have children; but I'm only looking for commitment from the apex men".

Although the "Marriage Strike" may be a myth, this article gives evidence that men's willingness to be fathers is the limiting factor in women having children. Perhaps there is a "Fatherhood Strike"?

We found that almost all the women we interviewed wanted to have children. Only 20 (less than 4 per cent) had decided they definitely did not want to have children.

However, many of the women (80 per cent) had fewer children than they desired. The women were still of reproductive age but when asked if they were likely to have children in the future, more than half (54 per cent) said this was unlikely because of circumstances often beyond their control.

We learnt the women had not lost the desire to have children, but that they faced serious barriers to motherhood.

Those who did not have a child said the main reason was not having a partner, or being unable to find a partner willing to commit to fatherhood. Very few women wanted to have a child while single.

All I want to do is commit to being a father and a husband. I just can't find a girl that's willing to reciprocate that, whatsoever. I did just start dating a new girl, a couple of weeks ago, however. I'm hoping it turns out well.

aaaand yep. It's already over. I was honest with her when I told her that she was treating me like shit, so she left and went back to her ex that beat her numerous times, threatened to rape and kill her, and had his mommy do the same.

Makes you wonder how many of these ladies actually had children and a partner but were simply unhappy with the number of children they had. One child families have become normal over the last 20yrs out of necessity. I cannot see female reproductive instincts changing that quickly.

I had no intention of having children with previous partners -- but my current SO? I actually was fine with it before she was.

The truth is that these women couldn't find men willing to commit to it with them -- and quite potentially it has to do with data points from both the men they were after, and these specific women.
