Check my recent comment history. You'll see me arguing with someone after they said they only felt bad for the women and children in the country. And that all the men deserved to die just because they weren't able to fight back.

I was shocked to find all of this in one single thread. Not with the initial comment, that was very informative. It's the latter ones with people believing and advocating that men be cannon fodder. People making jokes about men for being desperate enough to cling to airplanes as they take off, for the mere chance of escaping Afghanistan.

The women in Afghanistan are completely deserving of empathy as the Taliban take over and remove a lot of the rights that were established for them. But the men of Afghanistan deserve recognition too. They didn't ask for Taliban rule, and it's pretty clear many of them don't wish to be under it.

Afghanistan's own people consider it at best a federation/collection of tribes, let alone a unified country worth dying for.

I've previously mentioned that at least 75% of all civilian casualties in Afghanistan are men. It's actually hard to get data on this, because data on bad things happening to men is rarely collected. In this case, I have to infer from the data in the linked report, which says 12% of civilian causalities are women, and roughly a similar amount are children (the ratio between boys and girls is also similar to that of men and women, it's mostly boys being killed and injured). How many women are killed is worth collecting and reporting, but apparently not the number of men.

The reason why military age men are taking such desperate measure to flee is pretty straightfoward in my opinion. No one is going to help them, the best methods of fleeing are preserved for women and children. Perhaps most importantly, when the Taliban show up they're going to be straight up killing a lot of these men. Women and childrem, while they will be abused in other ways, will largely be spared from being killed. Just like Srebrenica, mass-killing is almost entirely focused on men.

Not that these people care. In their mind, a dead man is a more just outcome than mistreated woman, and therefore dead men are not worthy of concern.

Edit: There's also a huge level of hypocrisy in expecting Afghan men to do 'their duty' and conform to their gender role and get themselves killed fighting a losing war, but also criticizing Afghanistan for their patriarchal treatment of women.

The second comment is right, though. Men are much more willing to put themselves in harm’s way and make investments when they have no idea of the possible outcome, whereas women prefer to play safe and make their moves when they’re certain the odds are in their favor. A lot of people conflate that with men having more agency, which isn’t necessarily true. And people certainly love to overlook the cases of guys who made dangerous bets and got screwed because of it. And as much as they love to bash men and make sweeping generalizations based on the examples of men who use this willingness to ignore danger for evil purposes, society loooves and thrives on the much more prevalent guys who don’t use this willingness for nefarious purposes, specially men doing the cheap, essential and dangerous labor that is required for society to keep functioning the way it does and those who are willing to put their lives on the line to save women and children.

As for the last comment, there are few things that disgust me more than people who were born and grew up in the comfort and privilege of first world nations, without ever worrying about safety or lack of resources, telling people who didn’t have the same luck how they should act. Specially telling them that they should be ready to die.

That second commenter for the top...did they even listen? Are they literate? The men at the airports aren't the same ones at home keeping their wives there because if they were they'd be at home. Not only are these people ignoring a logical and measured response (that doesn't even try to take a moral stance anyway, just explain what is happening), but they're so eager to trip over themselves in order to make men then enemy that they can't even use basic logic.

The first point in the initial comment was even admitting there is misogyny keeping women at home. You'd expect them to go "Oh right good point that makes sense" since they're normally so eager to see misogyny everywhere.
