I heard it reiterated on the radio again today, women and children suffer disproportionately in war. Men are once again being prevented from leaving with their families or of their own free will.

There's an upvoted comment in AskFeminists right now that says war is horrible for everyone, but "especially" women and children.

Edit: I didn't want to provide a link, but for posterity, here's the full comment I'm talking about.

War is shit for everyone involved especially kids, women etcetera. Also Putin has ideas about gays and others which don't sound very nice. As for NATO involvement, Ukraine is technically not a part of NATO so there is no legal binding to help them out. It'll be up to the individual members to come together and decide if they want to get into a slugfest with what is essentially a near peer opponent. Things aren't that simple. It's a really bad catch 22. You don't do anything and Russia gets a free reign, you go in and you have to be prepared to accept deaths and losses of your own people at a rate that has not been seen in years. Such figures will be...hard to sell to a population/world that hasn't seen conventional peer warfare in decades.

edit: to the weird "whatabout" crowd popping up in the reply for some reason go someplace else or just touch grass. I made the post right when the invasion was kicking off so I still didn't know about the ukranians forcibly inducting guys. Plus what part of war being shit for "everyone involved" do you not get. OP asked specifically about women so that's what I focused on. Also "etcetera" is a perfectly viable word when a list is way too long to write down.

I’m so sad that no one is talking about this. How backward a world we live in. These men are just as afraid as anyone, they deserve refuge as much as anyone, yet they will be refused it on the basis of their gender. How can anyone not see how disgustingly discriminatory this is? My heart breaks for them. I have a Ukrainian friend and I’m so glad he’s not in Ukraine at the moment.

I've always wondered what would happen as soon as one country decided to make both men and women fight, wouldn't they have a massive numbers advantage? Especially in a defensive situation like Ukraine where a lot of the fighting is going to be ambush/guerilla tactics against an invading force. I could maybe see the argument that women can't serve because they don't have the physical strength for carrying heavy packs for long marches, etc. But none of that matters in urban warfare, really.

The elephant in the room that no one seems to want to admit is that the real reason women aren't expected to fight is because we think of them as higher than men.

Let me start by saying that "Women suffer the most in war" is a total bullshit and brainwashing.

That being said, the number of women serving in Ukraine armed forces is much higher than I would expect, some 15%.

There are 109 women who serve as platoon commanders in Ukraine's armed forces with 900 women officers in command positions with 13,000 women fulfilling the role of combatants.

I don't know how many of the 255,000 soldiers on active duty are in combatant roles, but some 40% of the women in active duty are in combatant roles. (Then there is the 900,000 reservists (ration of women unknown) and the general mobilisation of men.)

I would say that in today's society this is a huge progress - a change like this won't happen overnight.

I hate this whole "women most affected" rhetoric that's always spouted off. What's going on in the Ukraine is absolutely horrible to everyone it's affecting; men, women, children and animals. All are equally affected terribly by this. It's shameful and disgraceful for anyone to exploit it and try to make it out that one group is affected more than others. Even many women likely find the "whole most affected" thing annoying and insulting, especially those with sons and such.
