If you give it to her it is a gift, it's hers. She can leave the second you give it to her. No consequences.

To not give it as a gift make it clear. That's what the contract would be. The same as a rental or lease with no option to purchase. These contracts actually exist quite readily because high end jewelers consistently loan out there wears for people to wear and subsequently be photographed in, etc. So the contracts are rather standard. I let you wear this for free, you must return on x date. If not, you owe this value plus damages.

Also if it is nice jewelery over $15k USD, if she never files a gift receipt on her taxes and neither do you it is a bit more concrete. As it cannot be a gift. But that would be a backup argument and it should never get to that.

Edit to add, also if it is good jewelery have it insured under you. As an example my wife's engagement ring is under the law defined as a "gift in contemplation of marriage" and once the marriage happened, it's hers forever. We structured it such that upon divorce it would be valued as an asset and split 50/50. It's insured for its value of approx $60k and the insurance policy is paid for by me solely, the upkeep is paid for by her solely. It isn't completely uncommon. We also keep 100% separate finances and share no assets except for a list that we keep updated, usually only things worth $10k or more. Everything else is whoever bought it by default or whoever owned it before.

Then you're just letting her borrow your property. You don't need a legal contract, just get it in writing in a text or email that you're letting her borrow your jewelry and that it's yours. Make sure she agrees. Same rules apply if you let her borrow a shirt, or a car, or a laptop. If she refuses to give it back, you take her to court and the texts/emails will hold up. For the most part, jewelry is a bad investment.

I think your question makes sense. It might not be a sensible investment, but that's your choice. You let her wear your property, jewelry is just like your hat or raincoat from your wardrobe. So, just let her wear your clothes and file a police report if she steals it? I know police will probably not take that seriously because of social stigma, so this sub is totally the right place to ask.

Jewelry is the worst investment possible.

The valuable stones are not as rare as it may seem. It's hard to sell it even for half of the value it has.

Plus especially now when you can make synthetic diamonds etc... That are pretty much the same stuff but way cheaper.

The only good investment would be something like gold.

Jewelry as an investment is a bad idea and letting someone else freely have possession to your 'investments' is outright foolhardy.

Buy gold sovereigns or silver rounds and stash them somewhere.

If you want to buy jewelry for your gf fine. But make it necklace or bracelets. Never buy her a ring unless it is 'the' ring.

I don't know maybe call a advocate or a notary and get it notarized or make something like a contract. There is a lot of jewelry getting rented out so it should be possible to get them legally on your name as your possessions.

Your thought process is weird. If you want the ownership to be yours why give it to her in the first place? Why not just buy gold (without telling her) and keep it somewhere safe as an investment? If you give something to your girlfriend (or anyone for that matter) as a gift, you don't get to take it back. Either buy your girl some jewelry for HER, or don't give her anything at all.

I don't know what it is with women / society and rings. I guess because they symbolize love.

I have possession of an antique ring that was handed down to my husband through his father. The ring had belonged to my husband's great grandmother. Although a woman in his family "wears" the ring, she does not own it to do with as she pleases. The understanding is that the ring gets passed down through the male lineage, if possible.

When I took possession of the ring*, I knew that it was "on loan" to me for as long as my lifetime (including my right to have the diamonds put in a different setting), but then it was to go to either a son or a son of one of my sons for his wife / gf to wear. None if this is in writing but, as a manner of honor, that's what I intend to do.

*It's "valuable", but nothing special valuable. It's "old fashioned" and the major diamond in it is, again, nothing special. I keep it and sometimes wear it for its historic / ancestral value.

If it’s an engagement ring, you’ll have to write that one off as a loss. It’s worth it to see them happy, but I wouldn’t spend over £700 - it’s a show off item and you’ll get very little out of it except a bill. And then pressure for the wedding. It’s a long road. If it’s not an engagement ring, I wouldn’t bother with the legal gymnastics.
