Gender equality means equal access to opportunities.

The difference between male and females in society is their socialization. Most cultures have a social expectation that males are inherently better than their female counterparts for being male. That little effort is required to be better than girls or women, because boys and men are just simply better, which is why they historically used to earn more, were more educated, and had more resources. Society failed to acknowledge that males being "better" was a matter of women being barred and excluded from the opportunities that males had.

For example, families that would pour their money into the boys in their family (paying for his education, hobbies, and extra curricular activities) because his future was more important than his sister, that would just be married off left their daughters without the opportunity to further their education, scholarships for women gave women the opportunity to pursue higher education that wouldn't have been economically possible for them to achieve on their own.

Society has told boys and men that they're inherently better than women for all of their lives. Boys and men have been told that women can't compete with them, that women aren't as intelligent as them, that women aren't on their level. So it's a mindfuck and ego buster when boys and men see women outperforming them in every aspect of life. Especially if he's trying his hardest and still isn't capable of earning better grades, isn't capable of making extra curricular achievements, isn't capable of making friends, isn't capable of dating, etc, yet nothing he does is fruitful enough and he's passed up by everyone including the girls that he's supposed to be better than as a birth right. Women are even surpassing men when it comes to dating other women.

Gender equality has given equal academic and professional opportunities to men and women. However, socially the expectation that men are inherently better than women still exists, and many boys and men can't psychologically cope with not being able to prove demonstratively that they are better than women by having achievements that women didn't have the opportunity to achieve themselves.

Men no longer feel "special" and don't want to compete in society if there isn't a permanent underclass that guarantees them the ability to demonstrate their superiority over.

The common response is that women feel saddled with more responsibilities since they’re now expected to enter the workforce, yet still do the bulk of housework. While that is true to an extent, it’s also incredibly reductive and totally disingenuous. The people hurt most by this sort of deflection is women themselves, even if they don’t realise it.

The truth is that regardless of how much messaging we do regarding “female empowerment,” a large number of women do prefer to take on a more traditional role in the domestic sphere. Of course, it’s not on the government or society as a whole to abrogate any woman’s free will. Nonetheless, we should be honest about our biological parameters, and present motherhood and homemaking as a valid lifestyle for women to follow.

That said, it’s also looking highly impractical at the moment given that a dual income is practically mandatory to lead a middle-class lifestyle in America today.

One final note:
Hypergamy definitely plays a role here. Though women’s opportunities have now surpassed those of men in the United States and the majority of the Western world, they still insist on dating/marrying upwards since it’s a) rooted into their biology and b) what they’ve always done. Given the data that indicates relationships are more likely to end when the woman outearns the man, it’s clear that this disparity is making women unhappy as well. Of course, that’s ultimately up to the individual and if they can’t find a man who makes more than them, tough luck. It seems particularly unreasonable to make a significant income yourself and then demand more than twice as much in total, not only for principled reasons but practical ones as well.

Erm... so these women are sad because they feel their being forced to work to pay bills but also do the bulk of childcare and housework, and you think this is why women shouldn’t see their jobs as the most important thing in their lives (even though it literally pays the bills) they should concentrate more on just being somebody’s wife and mother?

How about telling those boys to fucking up their game?

Maybe that’s the problem?

Edit, do you honestly think women “prefer” doing housework, is it actually more likely the “prefer” the house being clean?

There will never be an equal outcome as men and women are not equal, biology and otherwise. You also have a government least US wise that is more focused on women than men. Men might as well not exist and men today are getting that message.

So without full access to the study this sounds like a reach but just fyi this was actual conclusion reached, per the abstract:

Results paradoxically indicated that gender equality enhances boys’ but not girls’ SWB, suggesting that greater gender equality may facilitate social comparisons across genders. This may lead to an increased awareness of discrimination against females and consequently lower girls’ SWB, diluting the overall benefits of gender equality.

It’s a surprise to the scientific community

Is it? I feel like the female happiness rating discussions are not new (ex. Part of Red Pill Theory from over a decade ago is based on declining female happiness in a older study) . The scientific community are seldom surprised by social sciences issues, and there are long standing phycological theories for why objectively better off people do not always subjectively feel better off.

but societies that have gone the furthest in promoting gender equality and have gone the furthest to make options equal under the law, have seen a widening gap between men and women.

What's not brought up throughout all these studies here, that PPD as a whole I don't think would agree men are happier in the current status quo. This study states there is no decline. Only sunlit uplands for men and ambivalence from women.

Specifically, we found larger gender gaps in adolescent subjective well-being favoring boys in countries featuring greater levels of gender equality, compared with countries featuring lower levels of gender equality. Although boys’ subjective well-being was higher in countries with greater levels of gender equality, girls’ subjective well-being was not affected by country-level gender equality.

Surprise surprise men and women are different. If men and women separate themselves given free choice should we as a society force a more equal outcome? Is this is what is best for society?

Equality of outcome is only useful while there is bias preventing equality of opportunity. Perhaps we are now past this; but that has not always been the case.

Regardless at a population level we are happier this way apparently.
