As a father I know that I am allowed in a family room, but that does not mean I am always "welcome" in one.

There was a case here in Australia a few years ago where a mothers' group went militant. They actually blockaded parents' rooms and prevented males from entering claiming it was inappropriate for them to be there. Now all signs on parents' rooms operated by Sydney City Council say that fathers are welcome.

It's a lot easier to deal with an abusive mother if there is a sign to back you up.

Try getting divorced: divorced Dads are always treated as interlopers by schools, courts; pretty much any authority that has influence over a child's life. This attitude is inherent throughout society, not just in the "system".

Or maybe whoever created this sign knows about the stigma to dads and they are trying to make dads feel welcome.

I, personally, think it's good, and it may be necessary in the current climate, to make it clear on signs, and everywhere else, that dads are part of the family and are welcome.

maybe the owner/operater noticed people giving men dirty looks there, so changed the sign to discourage this behavior.

You're angry. Not sure who you're angry at, but I'm assuming the owner of the sign to be it.

You're wrong to be angry. The sign, the explicitly declared welcome to fathers, is a very good thing.

The society we live in (at least the one I live in...), adheres to an implied irrelevance of fathers. Most restrooms omit changing tables in the men's room, the occasional "where's your mommy?" when I'm actually talking to my kid. Stuff like that.

Like it or not, the absence of "DADS WELCOME" can imply that fathers are unwelcome, or even barred from the venue.

It's chafing to be treated as 'special'. I get ticked every time someone says "you're such a great father...", as if being a father, wanting to be a father, was something weird and unexpected. I've learned to say 'thanks' and move on. In this context, you should, too.

Why not just call it "Mom and kids lounge, Dads welcome" because that makes more sense based on the fact that apparently Dads are not family members.

I'd rather see a "Women and Children's Lounge" than see "Dads Welcome" like it's an afterthought to the family...

Well, I'd think that the dads would either be in the delivery room or have a specific place to go so the doctor can find them. Family waiting room sounds like pretty much anyone.

Or a more generous interpretation is that the creator of this sign was trying to affirm that fathers are most definitely welcome in the event that anyone raised a fuss.

I think originally the family lounge was for breast feeding women. So that either men were uncomfortable or they were told by their significant other that they couldn't come in.

Honestly though I don't see this much as a problem. Its just making sure that dad's are welcome. Or would you rather the "family lounge" actually mean "women and children only"?

I would like to know the context of the picture. Maybe it's an urban hospital serving black families and they want to encourage fathers to be there because of the high rate of single black mothers. Context is always important.

this is in the US? i wonder if we have anything up here in canada? never seen anything as such though, and never treated like so...i would have liked to see the mothers group try and block me though...hahaha...don't malls have security?

Nah, I'll give it a green card myself, there are too many men who think they are excluded from this environment and to many women that think this isn't a place for men.

The only thing I find a little confusing is why specify just dads, why not any male relevant to whatever area that is, or is that just marketing?
