people misunderstand "dying alone". its not being alone at the moment of death. when you age you become sicker and frailer and less able to do anything for yourself, and you can be in this state for decades sometimes, getting worse and worse. certainly there nurses and home health aides, BUT, they dont love you and with no one to look out for you are left at their mercy

I'm 60 and haven't even dated since my twenties. Never married. From my perspective, staying single has been my greatest success. I wouldn't be a good partner and have managed to make my life as useful as possible.

Having other people around as I'm dying sounds irritating specially some grumpy old guy who is probably pissed at me for not being a good partner.

Living single is indeed challenging but in some ways I enjoy the challenge.

It's pointless to worry about dying in general - many times, even people who had large families will still die alone, all you have to do is be the last one alive. You get to watch your entire family die first, too! Is that better?

Meanwhile, if you're in a relationship with someone you don't love, you'll be spending your days eternally wanting to be alone. Trust me - when you don't like someone, sharing a house and morgage and chores with them is agony, because you have to talk to and work with them all day long, when you wish you didn't have to deal with them at all.

However, it's rare to have just one person go through your entire life with you. You will eternally be part of a rotating cast of friends, family and lovers, some you'll know for only a short time, some you'll know for years.

I've found it's much smarter to enjoy the journey, and enjoy whoever is around you, and try to be a fun, positive influence on others so that MORE people want to spend time with you. The destination will get here regardless, and trust me, once you're dead you aren't gonna be worried about it.

For now dating is not worth the toll it takes on my mind. But the only thing more depressing than my life right now is to find out that this is all my life amounted to until I die

The only people I know who are “happy” single are having sex on a regular basis. Some of these people are fucking that one person as much if not more than their friends in relationships

A post I like! No, it is not. Dating is a want not a need now.

Being alone for most of your life does suck for a lot of people, but I refer to being alone not just in a romantic manner but with family and no friendships. Romantic love is just one piece of the puzzle for social satisfaction. There are lots of people in great relationships that have no good family members or friends and they often feel something is missing too.

However, some people are introverted and really wired to like being alone. They do not need romantic or platonic love. And there is nothing wrong with that. Also in today's world we need people less for survival. I do not really understand the "old cat lady" insults men give to women. I do not think there is anything wrong with being an "old cat lady."

If your death is fast no, most peoples don't die fast. They die slowly, forced to accept that for all they have done was for nothing and for all effort they have now nothing. You won't just die, you'll be forgotten.

I work with old people

It’s sad af and these people always end up alcoholics or pill heads.

The only people who are alone and doing alright seem to be those who have kids. You can not have a partner but not having any family whatsoever as an old person is depressing af. I think people here don’t realize how quick shit can go bad if ur old and alone.

I imagine it's pretty bad once you are decrepit to the point where you no longer can take care of yourself. If you ask older people with health problems what their source of happiness in life is most will say it's their family/friends.

It doesn't seem that bad if one is close to one's friends or one's family. Otherwise, living without any real social interaction seems kind of sad and depressing to me, and I'm a naturally introverted person.

as someone who was deprived of oxytocin for 30 years I found that oxytocin is by far the most regulating hormone in our body. After being starved of it for so long and feeling the stark difference in my whole person after getting it steadily.

I learned that I would not wish oxytocin starvation on anyone.

It's not a horrific fate. But some people don't see that. Some people are so damaged that they would rather be in any shitty relationship than to be single. Usually these people don't have any meaningful connection to other humans outside of that relationship.
