I had read it several times on this subreddit and I knew it's something you're not supposed to do, but it didn't quite click until recently.

It just dawned on me "what if someone said I was good-looking or handsome?"

I would definitely appreciate the comment, of course. But in the back of my head, I would probably think something like, "well, she's probably just saying that to be polite." Almost like when your mom says you look handsome. Well, of course she will. She's your mom.

I think it's part self-esteem, part modesty, and part I-just-don't-know-what-to-do-with-that-compliment. My parents had way more to do with my facial structure than I ever have.

On the other hand, if someone said "love that outfit" or "have you been working out lately?," that really means something to me. I put in the effort selecting the clothes and the hours exercising. To see that noticed by others really makes me feel good.

I probably haven't written anything groundbreaking here but I just wanted to share because there might be someone else in the same situation as me that I could help. Hope you enjoyed the read :)

TL;DR - I realized why complimenting a girl's beauty isn't that effective by thinking about what it would be like if someone complimented my looks.
