I was in a similar position as OP, but I've taken upon myself to not hold to the past and malice toward the girl. The best way to not be in the friend zone is to never get there in the first place. Your break away from her allowed you to stop being friends and establish a new relationship. Basically you set a frame where you are man and woman or just drop it. Either she realizes she was just playing games by not being interested, or she really isn't and you'd have been wasting your time anyway.

This is a great story and I don't want to rain on OP's parade, but.....

I think the only reason this strategy might have worked is because OP had already confessed his love to Farah in High school, so she knew that no matter how many times he rejected her there was still a possibility he was interested. That emotion of "this might work" still existed in her mind. If OP hadn't had this history with her she would have just thought "oh he's not interested."

The "chase" is a very subtle game, where on one hand you want to mildly push them away but you also can't outright reject them because then the logical part of their brain lights up and goes "this guy just rejected me! Must move on before I get my heart broken!" It's a delicate dance and most guys can't do it and it totally depends on your existing relationship with the girl. I, unfortunately, recently erred on the side of outright rejecting a girl when I told a girl I was dating we should "just be friends" after she showed up late to a date.

The girl I'm trying to get with I've never hooked up with before, and she has a lot of guys all over her, I'm not the only one like OP here seems to be (at least at the reunion party he's the only one).
