What qualifies something as "deepfake"? Supposing it's a very sexual, very intimate picture of a celebrity, but without their head being visible. Is that a problem? What if the celebrity could be identified if you happened to know they had a particular tattoos or other mark, meaning most people would not know who it was supposed to be?

I suspect it will be hard to legislate well for this.

Seems like a natural extension of "revenge porn" laws, which, while basically ethical, are clearly designed to protect women's social reputation at all costs. Notice few to no similar protections are made against the social weapons women use against men.

There goes all those nude paintings in the National Art Gallery and the future of art.

The reality is that every representation is a fake approximation, because it can't be the real thing, so the sooner we start to understand that nothing is absolute truth out there, the sooner we can stop relying on an imaginary authenticity, putting our trust in things that can be easily faked and hold everything questionable.

Isn't it time we stopped being concerned about nudity when its one of the most natural things in the world, stopped relying on nudity as an accurate indicator of sexual interest and actually communicated with words and stopped being concerned when fake nudes appear?

Lets treat everything as a fake, to be clarified by the real thing if necessary.

We allow caricatures and cartoons to make jokes that are fake and can never be the actual thing because of the medium, so why don't we allow people to be creative?

Photographs of women are usually fake because of all the makeup as well as being a representation only and not the real thing.

The only area this really impacts society in is identification and security, so perhaps we need officially recorded nude photos of people to match against them in reality when confirming secure details and identity .

The UK has gone lemming woke when it all stems from subjective hurt feelings that should mean something to the person experiencing them, but nothing to anyone else. Those feelings are being created in the mind of the person experiencing them and they are that persons responsibility, not anyone elses.

It all reminds me of those fake x-ray glasses that people found so fascinating in past decades, when they weren't showing reality, they weren't invading privacy because it was all fake.

It’s not the same because a drawing and a photoshop are way less realistic than a deepfake

AI will reproduce to the identical (or nearly identical) a photo or even video of the person in an explicit position. A photoshop montage can be busted way more easily (depending on the skills of the person doing), and a drawing even more

Also, I would like to add that AI can also fake evidences of a crimes, make you say thing which you never said using your voice, like admitting a crime you never did. Ai deepfakes are a danger to everyone, including men regarding false accusations

Also, photoshopping someone’s face on a porn image is also very, very weird

To play devil's advocate and like others have pointed out If everyone can be faked how can anything be true? I find it suspicious that around the super bowl the deepfakes of Taylor Swift were scrubbed from the Internet in mere hours, where I seriously doubt a man or even a lesser female celebrity would get the same treatment. It's really a matter of things needing to be above reproach when it comes to scrutiny ESPECIALLY when it comes to the matter of law.

I don't think this is a good men's rights issue. Unregulated AI is going to become increasingly dangerous for all of us. What is maybe makes this a MR issue is that it targets visual pornography which is a market predominately of male consumers. Deep faking ANYONE without permission, with the exception maybe of satire and other fair use clauses, should be illegal. Defending non-consensual deepfakes is not a good look, advocating for regulation of all non-consensual deepfakes is.

This is completly fine.

I don't think it's some great evil to jack off to a deep fake of a hot celebrity. In most cases you aren't directly harmed in any way by someone making sexual images that look like you BUT you also have a right to not want people to make these images with your likeness.

For those people (mostly women) that are inclined sell pictures of their body for money this would actually harm them in the same way that copywriter infringement causes harm to the copwright holder.

Bear in mind that men make up a larger proportion of so-called sextortion victims than most people realise this actually probably helps men as much as it does women, despite the intentions of the lawmakers, like adding coercive control to the domestic abuse legislation has.

As for defending this use of AI, there is no legitimate reason to be making deep-fake porn of anyone. For goodness sake, use your imagination if you must get off to Debby from Accounting. Anything you do online is absolutely at risk of getting out, and once it's out, it's out for good and quite possibly ruining lives just as much as false accusations can.

People have the right to own their own image, if you walk past a police facial scanner on a calm street would you not be annoyed that they’re scanning your image despite never having committed a crime?

I would they have no right to my image if I haven’t done anything wrong.

The same stands here celebrities who haven’t done any nudity/ sex scenes don’t want to show that part of themselves and they have the same right to demand that they not be faked.

Especially when the images/footage will soon be so life like It can be passed as ‘hacked’ and used to discredit them.

Seriously trying to spin this as an attack on men, is fucking victim mentality bullshit, there’s plenty of legit things you can bring up in here…

E.g. men’s mental health crisis, education rates etc…

But people wanting privacy and the rights to their own image not to be discredited is a totally fair thing, the law doesn’t go far enough everyone should be protected by it, deepfakes are gonna cause all of problems in the next couple years.

Look I am a mens rights activist but I dont see a problem unless they accuse people left and right ? I suppose the law is gender neutral ? Imagine if you had a guy friend who broke up with his girlfriend . Then the girl as a revenge decides to deepfake his image ( like he is made to be gay or he is cheating with other women and stuff ) and circulate it with intention of cyberbullying. He will lose his mental peace and be harassed as photos which spread lies about him and humiliate him are spread online . This will create distress and harassment to him for something that is not even his fault . Taking away someones right to their body , their social freedom , their right to privacy with their bodies , and their right to peace and privacy . Same as bullying , if you harass someone you are taking away their right of privacy. Similar to spreading fake news about some company that will damage their reputation and sales . It is same intention of bullying and harassment.

I’m pretty ok with this law conceptually (I don’t know all the fine print). Creating artificial porn that is indistinguishable from the real thing has the potential to genuinely destroy people’s lives.
