Therapist here. If one of my clients did either thing (blood or pee), we would process it next session as a part of their therapy. Any remaining services for the day would be carried out in a different space and the couch would be professionally cleaned. If there was a clear stain left behind after the cleaning, we would replace the couch and donate the old one to a local shelter. Shame never needs to be a part of these things.

That being said, the responses you get on Reddit feminist subs will likely rarely mirror best therapy practices

If something that embarrassing would happen to me I would INSIST on paying for the cleaning, to get at least some kind of dignity back... I think it's even more embarrassing to avoid accountability by saying it's 'a natural body function'! That might be true, but I still damaged someone else's property, so I have to take responsibility for the damage I have caused. Jeez, accidents happen, so what? If you have an indemnity insurance you don't even need to pay... Get over it!

Male here. I do a lot of professional counseling. It might make sense in other contexts, but not in this one. It would most likely be an accident and very embarrassing for the client - male or female, *urine or blood. And in that vulnerable of an environment I wouldn't add insult to injury and send them a cleaning bill.

There are generally enforceable regulations around cleaning up bodily fluids, especially blood. Odds are good that the office is going to just have to replace the entire couch since it is very difficult to sanitize soft absorbent material sufficiently. Whether they want to charge a client for that is up to them, because it may cost them the client, male or female.

That woman apparently has some significant problems, so they might just eat the cost of the couch because I am sure that all the therapy she needs brings in a lot of income. But if they bill her then she is absolutely responsible for it.

I think paying the bill is fair. Like throwing up in a taxi. That said, many businesses will absorb costs like this that arise. Kind of like dropping a bottle of wine at the liquor store. Many stores just clean it up, cost of business. Some stores would ask for payment.

Usually the more distant the workers are from ownership of the store, the more likely it is to just absorb the cost.

A therapist is usually a sole proprietor, so it comes out of their earnings directly. Same usually with the taxi. Like Uber. They will charge the customer 100%.

If it were me I’d take the cost on the chin. If I were ever in that situation, I would have appreciated not getting a bill, in addition to the embarrassment.

That said, I would be offering to pay for the cleaning if I were the person soiling the couch.

Bodily function or not the adult thing to do was offer to clean the couch or to pay for cleaning. If I accidentally puke on your furniture I clean it, I don't just walk away. She's a huge asshole and hopefully that therapist refuses future appointments

OR every single bodily fluid given off by another person is seen as disgusting to the average person. I do NOT want someone’s urine, poop, snot, semen, Cowper’s fluid, vaginal discharge, pus, or even sweat on me or my property or to even see them too much, and all of these are vectors for disease so of course that disgust evolved for good reason - though sweat far less so. They’re also all ‘natural’. This includes any blood, let alone period blood. If that’s some people’s fetish, woohoo for them, but that is NOT the social default or appropriate in public.

Radfems immediately see a negative reaction to something female and scream misogyny, and ‘YOU GO GIRL’ at all those stunning and brave ‘free bleeding’ runners, women with viral videos painting with their period blood, and other weirdo cultist bullshit. Not only does this apply to sex-neutral fluids, but I don’t see them reacting well to men ‘free jizzing’ in public. In fact I’m pretty sure they’d call that toxic masculinity, sexual assault of anyone who sees it, etc.

The number of unhinged posts I see from women on reddit with other women bending over backwards to enable them is insane.

I just saw a post of a woman who, at the gym, demanded that a random man clean up another man's mess. She went into this tirade about how women always clean up after men or something (first I've heard of it), and she's convinced that since she was born with a vagina, she can just point fingers at men and tell them what to do if she feels she's right. She was absolutely befuddled that the man reacted to her with confusion.

Another post there was about a woman with chronic knee pain. She was furious that her doctor suggested weight loss. Only at the end of the post did she reveal that she was 5'2 and morbidly obese. Of fucking course you have knee pain. But no, she needs medical care that doesn't involve weight loss. She needs a doctor to wave his magic wand so she can keep recklessly eating with no ill effects.

Damn, I was actually in a really similar situation. I was babysitting for a friend of my parents and I bled through my pad onto their sofa, I was modified. When the dad came back he offered to walk me home because it was late, so he didn't go into the living room and I panicked and didn't say anything. I got home and messaged right away that I had blood stains on my trousers and that I could have bled onto the sofa. So, a little bit of a white lie, but I just couldn't say what happened to the dad's face.

They had me babysit again and I could see it was slightly visible still even after they attempted to wash it. They were really understanding and luckily it was one where they could remove the cover so the could at least wash it, otherwise it would have been a lot worse.

It's a very uncomfortable situation to be in. I don't think you should have been down voted, it might seem unfair but it's unfortunately a consequence, I guess it just comes across as cruel.

In both situations it would be involuntary and humiliating so they might be more understanding. I'm not sure it this is a really a gender issue, especially as there isn't a post to compare it too. I understand women are bad holding themselves accountability but I'm not sure this is that situation.

With the noted exception of incontinence, urination can be controlled. A period cannot. That does not excuse the behaviour, generally should know if they're about to start and how heavy they typically are. And let's face it it's common decency to admit your mistakes and make reparations.

I mean maybe?? I could imagine if a male client was going through a session, and got extremely emotionally unstable and peed himself, the therapist to keep the customer would not charge him for the damage. After all it's a business and you want your clients coming back. I would argue that in both cases, the business should just buy a new couch and write it off. They could probably cover by adding 1 new client anyway.
