As the ex, just letting y’all know…. The DFCS lets us know when you’ve found a new employer. Also, they will notify your employer how much child support is owed or whether the child is supposed to be on your health insurance plan. They will enforce it based on the employer attached to your social security. When taxes come, if you’re in arrears, DFCS will notify the IRS. We’ll get a letter from IRS notifying us your refund was garnished and that a check will be mailed.

So while you could work many 1099 jobs or purely cash… any job worthwhile with benefits and W2 will make it very difficult to hide. The DFCS and IRS keep the custodial parent (often times the ex wife) informed. And if they don’t know, they can always call to ask. It’s not confidential.

Put every bonus into your 401k. About as close as you can get as a W2 guy. Even that doesn’t help much.

Incorporate yourself (llc / s-corp) and get paid as a business on a 1099

I'll just thrown in how uniquely American this is. The spousal support idea itself is unheard in most of the world, and where it does exist it's very brief (months) and is about the survival and not "i got accustomed to lavish lifestyle while not working". Adults are expected to be self sufficient after divorce the same way they were before the marriage.

But the spouse asking for more money because her not-a-husband got promotion? Tell this to somebody in another country. They'll say, it's absolutely bonkers.

laws governing amounts, caps and modifications vary from state to state. your attorney should be able to educate and advise you.

The reality that a lot of people don't like or want to acknowledge is that it sadly is not uncommon to have a delusional and/or angry ex when it comes to money, particularly if she was relying on you to make most of the income and deal with finances paying the the bills while she did most of the spending. When that happens they will often seek modifications because they aren't managing their money well and/oror don't have the lifestyle they used to have/want, or just plain dont want to work. It's also surprisingly common to see a BS attempt at a modification to extend support when they realize payments are about to end soon.

so far i’m lucky… i got a new job that pays 80k more but my ex hasn’t filed for a reassessment in 5 years so my support hasn’t gone up yet.

Alimony usually doesn’t go up after the divorce afaik, it can generally only go down. Child support is different.
