You're just hearing a very loud minority of people. The vast, vast majority of people are not having sex with multiple new people a year.

Just to preface all this, personally, I don't care what people get up to, morally speaking. I don't think a person sleeping around makes them a bad person. Or a personal being virginal makes them a good person. Not to say that it wouldn't impact my decision to be in an intimate, romantic relationship with said person, as I'd only want to be with someone who shares my values around love, sex and relationships. But I don't feel as though they're inherently bad/good people for their sexual history.

Median partners is around 4-5 for women, and 6-7 for men, by age 50. According to the CDC, anyway.

As for estimating the partner counts of people around me, from my real world experience, promiscuous behavior is still viewed negatively by the vast majority of people, despite what the internet seems to think.

Here's something that leans more toward that.

"Global study found that willingness to consider someone as a long-term partner dropped sharply as past partner numbers increased. The effect was strongest between 4 and 12. There was no evidence of a sexual double standard. People were more accepting if new sexual encounters decreased over time."

There's also some studies around the idea that people tend to over report sexual intercourse, even in anonymous studies.

Couple that with people having less sex these days than they were, and that number is still falling... It could be very low.

Millennials and Gen Z have had rising rates of adult virgins, and the proportion of young adults who reported having two or more sexual partners also declined, from 23% in 2011 to 10% in 2021. I'm not sure what it is in 2025, but I can't imagine it's gone up to early 2010 levels again.

We hear about meaningless sex constantly now, but the reality is that less people are having it than ever... Meaningful sex included, sadly.

I really don't care about people sleeping around. I've had friends that do it. But the idea that most people are having a double digit number of partners just isn't true.

As for me, personally, I've never had it casual sex. I've been offered it a few times, and I've always turned it down. I've always had this sneaking suspicion that most people aren't having as much sex as we'd be lead to believe. And the longer I live, and the more I experience of people, and the more I read, the more I've found that to be the case.

I am curious as to what's going to happen with the increasing virginity rates, less sex in millennial and gen z, and the recent trend towards more conservatism. With men at least, anyway.

I had an 8 month hoe phase lol and it was really fun! I didn’t ever get with a guy with the intention of sleeping with him more than once, although one FWB did come from this by accident because of sexual chemistry. I reason I did this is because I had gotten out of 3 year relationship over 2 years prior and I just wanted to put myself out there again without any expectations. Eventually I wasn’t having fun anymore and I stopped of my own volition.

It’s not about “need”. For people who don’t have any hang ups about sex, it’s just a natural result when you and a person you’re hanging out with are both horny and down to clown.

Well I've never been into casual sex myself but I've seen plenty of coworkers at the jobs of my youth be into it.

They were poor and it's cheap entertainment. Simple as that. The pill is like seven bucks or something for I think three months supply. Condoms you ask the guy to provide. Get bought a few drinks while you're out. Get good at sex and sizing up men's potential.

Casual sex doesnt mean hes gonna switch partner, its about the expectation of the relationship's "severity". I have no intention to be a boyfriend and have obligations. I have no obligation to be your fiancee in 5 years or so, or to marry you.

I'm in a relationship now, but when I was single, I would go for casual sex because relationships are hard to get so I guess I took the easier way out, since I was horny.

Because sex is enjoyable, it’s not something I plan but if I’m vibing with someone and there’s mutual attraction sometimes it just happens. It doesn’t always have to lead to something serious, sometimes sex is just sex.

It's not a debate?

I do it because i'm horny and i don't want to date most men. And i would love to have constant sex partners but 1.i'm a nomad, and 2. they are spoiling with time when they think i'm "hooked". Also different people fuck differently and i like it. I wouldn't know half the things i'm into if not casual sex.
