I was in my politics lecture today and the lecturer played a clip of a feminist explaining why women don't run for office. She basically said that women don't run because men make women feel inferior and often make women feel less valid as a result. Another reason is family, and that female politicians are frowned upon if they have a family. Also, little girls aren't encouraged by friends and family when they display aspirations to be a politician. This is reinforced when they grow up and realise that they are living in a male dominated society and men hate women.
After the lecture, I was with a friend and one of her friends. The video came up and I said something along the lines of 'she played the victim card a bit, didn't she? I almost felt bad for being a man'. To which the girl said 'ugh, you're an idiot. You're whats wrong with th- don't even look at me you misogynist'. The conversation continued on and I stayed quiet contemplating the fact that I was just insulted for stating my opinion. I excuse myself as I had a tutorial that I had to attend. As I'm walking away, I hear the girl say something along the lines of 'what a dick head. How can you stand being around him?!'
I can't help but feel like I have to resign myself to accepting that I am inherently an oppressor by birth, and saying anything against that, I deserve to be insulted and made to feel inferior.
Sorry, I just had to vent.
